Very Few Collections

Using app deployment and User-Centric as your philosophy, you only need a few targetable device collections—scope needs.

Remember ConfigMgr 2007 and wql-based collection queries? Use a Deployment Type Requirement instead.

Device Collections: mainly for Custom SettingsMaintenance Windows

Endpoint Protection Settings

Custom Client Agent settings (hardware, software, mobile devices)

Brian Mason: Offload SQL loads, not SQLUse MP Replicas:• No, not the new, cool, fancy DRS Service Broker

stuff for CAS to Primary to Secondary communications

• Old fashioned transactional replication using a snapshot and publications and subscribers.

• Set & forget stability

Brian Mason: Offload SQL loads, not SQLWhat’s in the replica

• Upon generation• Upon snapshot

Brian Mason: SUPs are different

SUPs can use local databases or shared• Local DB means any SUP can go down and

you’re still serving clients• Shared DB means you have that one DB as a

single point of failure• There is a network cost to clients changing SUPs

(there is not for MPs)

Boundary usage

Are

used for

•Content location by clients•Auto-site assignment by clients•Secondary site MP location

Are not used for

•Primary site MP or SUP selection by clients•Internet clients•Any server side processes•Client site re-assignment

Boundary types

Pro Con

IP Subnet

• Fast processing time • Requires knowledge of all client subnet masks

• No aggregation• Requires no aggregation of IP

subnets in AD for site assignment to function correctly

AD Site

• Fast processing time• Easy to setup

• Requires AD sites to be properly defined

• Requires AD sites to be granular• Software Updates during OSD has

issues

IP Range• Easy to implement• No dependencies on AD• Granular

• Slow processing time

Boundary general recommendations

AD Sites•AD subnets are well defined or Auto-site assignment is not needed•A lot of boundaries are needed

IP Range•Client subnet masks are unknown•AD subnets are not well defined•Granularity is needed or aggregation is possible•Performance is not an issue

IP Subnets•AD subnets are well defined or Auto-site assignment is not needed•Client subnet masks are known•A lot of boundaries are needed

Mix and match as needed Performance threshold: 100 clients / boundary
