MAAE President’s Welcome

Welcome to the 60th annual fall conference hosted by the Michigan Association of Airport Executives (MAAE). Over the course of the last 60 years the conference has developed into a melting pot of large, small and medium sized Michigan airports and is a venue where we can gather with an agenda of topics providing a common ground for sharing knowledge and experiences.

This year we will have one day of speakers and sessions where we will “look back” and revisit some of the highlights of MAAE’s involvement in the shaping of aviation in Michigan. This will be followed by a day of “looking forward,” wherein we try to provide insight into what aviation in Michigan might look like in the future.

This fresh, new approach to the agenda will be blended with the established format of learning more about the products and services provided by industry vendors, our partners and supporters

of this conference. There will be an update by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Michigan Office of Aeronautics and of course, the very popular round–table sessions where the members have an opportunity to share experiences and gain knowledge from fellow airport representatives.

In addition to the business side of the agenda there will be time to enjoy the local attractions and unique shops of the Frankenmuth area and conference attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf at The Timbers Golf Course or enjoy the sun by taking a relaxing and leisurely canoe ride or a more adventurous outing by kayaking the Cass River!

Again, welcome to the conference. Please take time to work hard, play hard and enjoy the time you have to spend in this warm and friendly atmosphere.

Joel Manby

“Howie knows all of your inner secrets (on Air Force One), when you can’t take the pressure, when you’re tired and crying and sleeping on the floor. The perception on the outside is always different from the inside.” Former press secretary to Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Marlin Fitzwater

The son of a New York-area marina and deli owner, Franklin enlisted in the Air Force at age 20 with a single aspiration: to see the world. It’s easier for him to name the places he hasn’t been rather than reel off an exhaustive list of journeys.

He began in 1965 preparing meals for B-52 flight crews in Guam. At various career stops, he cooked for and served generals, secretaries of defense, secretaries of state, and heads of state.

Howie is the only Flight Steward who worked for five US Presidents: Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton. He also flew extensively with Dr. Kissinger, Secretary of State, on his Shuttle Diplomacy Missions during the Nixon and Ford administrations.

Howie spent 29 years in the United States Air Force, reached the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, 24 years at Andrews Air Force Base in Special Missions Operations, including 18 years on Air Force One. Howie has over 300 stories of his memories of working around Presidents, First Ladies, Vice Presidents, Cabinet Secretaries, VIP guests and U.S. press corps.

Currently, Howie serves as Vice President of the North Carolina Aviation Association and is the Director of Brunswick County Airport in southeastern North Carolina, the last place, going north, on the east coast where palm trees grow wild. The airport was coined by the Atlantic Flyer periodical, “The Little Airport with the Big Heart.”

Joel Manby is President and Chief Executive Officer of Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation (HFE). HFE is the largest family owned theme park corporation in the U.S. The Company creates, develops and operates entertainment, tourism and hospitality properties spanning 26 locations in ten states.

Manby has incorporated the definition of love, the verb, into the companies existing organic culture to establish how leaders are to behave. He views love as a mode of thinking-one that has helped him deliver tangible results.

An expert on leadership and customer relations, he spent 20 years in the auto industry. Joel was a member of the start-up team for Saturn Corporation and after seven years with Saturn and a two-year term with GM’s International Division, he was promoted to CEO of Saab Automobile USA. During his four-year tenure at Saab the company’s J.D. Power Quality Rating improved from 30th to fifth in the industry.

Manby serves on several boards, including the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and John Scott Ministries. He also chairs reThink, a non-profit company whose mission is to provide effective tools which enable families to learn biblical virtues in the home, school and church.

As valedictorian of Albion College, Joel was a Rhodes scholarship finalist. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School on a GM scholarship. His involvement with his alma mater has continued throughout his career. Joel was elected to the Albion College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and has served on the Albion College Board of Trustees. Celebrating his accomplishments and his dedication to the college, Albion presented Joel with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

In March 2010, he was featured on the hit CBS show Undercover Boss. Manby and the employees of HFE moved millions of viewers across the world with their unique approach to leadership. He now shares the principles that make HFE successful in his new book, Love Works.
