    Gan dimau ymarer y maer dylanwad penna wrth weithredu unrhyw ddatblygiad mewn

    seydliadau iechyd a goal cymdeithasol. Mae pob ymarerydd bron yn aelod o dm. Mae natury timau hynnyn gallu amrywio; eallai eu bod yn dm agos neun gasgliad o unigolion gwahanol,

    Training hours associated with this Unit = 3 hours

    Aims o the unit:

    The unit aims to encourage participants to critically examine their teams practices and explore

    how these working arrangements support or hinder the pursuit o excellence in recovery

    orientated service user led care planning. This unit identifes key eatures o the Mental Health

    (Wales) Measure 2010 and its impact on team practice in mental health.

    This is not a team development unit but one that locates teams (and eectively led teams)

    in the prime position to respond to the requirements o the Mental Health (Wales)

    Measure 2010.

    Introduction

    Practice teams are the engine room o development in health and social care organisations.

    Virtually every practitioner is a member o a team. The nature o those teams may vary; they may

    be close knit or a more disparate collection o individuals, but a team nonetheless.Within such teams, there is a need or some attention to be paid to leadership requirements.

    What is leadership? What is the relationship between leadership and management? What is the

    unction o leadership in the development o excellence in care planning and what are the support

    structures to enable creativity, innovation and excellence to thrive in teams? This unit provides a

    brie review o some o these issues and concentrates on what leadership and team development

    can contribute to high quality recovery orientated care planning and treatment.

    Introductory narrative

    The role o practice/clinical teams in developing and sustaining excellence in care planning.

    Services are aced with making decisions about radical service re-design, based on a range o

    competing and complementary demands such as patient demand and need; organisational and

    fnancial constraints and workorce recruitment and retention issues, to name but a ew.

    Increasingly attention is drawn to the role that eective team working can play in responding saely,

    creatively and productively to these service demands. Team working can play an important role in

    developing and supporting individual practitioners understand the changes and eel sae in their

    required response. In addition to this, high quality team working is associated with better patient

    outcomes1.

    Notes or acilitator: The Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 and associated legislation

    requires some signifcant changes in the way some services are delivered. No doubt a number

    o practitioners will adjust easily and speedily to new practice duties, while some others may

    fnd it challenging. The issue o culture change in secondary mental health services is an

    undercurrent in the Measure, Regulations and Code o Practice. Thereore practice teams will

    have a signifcant role in responding to this call or change.

    The Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010: The team response

    The Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 represents a signifcant piece o legislation which has

    widespread support. The role o practice teams in responding purposeully to the requirements

    o the Measure will be a critical actor in its successul implementation.

    The ollowing exercise is designed to start a debate in teams on how they can respond as a unit

    to the elements o the Measure.

    Exercise 1:

    Use Handout 1 and introduce the activity: team members are provided with a list o some

    o the key elements o the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010. They are asked

    to consider their team responses and then encouraged to write their method o

    evidencing achievement o the Measure.

    Feedback as a large group on their reections on the requirements o the Measure and

    how they might respond.

    Notes or acilitator: The exercise is designed to help participants unearth any dierencebetween their personal response to the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 and that o their

    colleagues. Any dierence is important to raise and seek a resolution.

    Additionally the exercise is designed to challenge participants to respond to the call or greater

    improvement in services. No matter how well a participant eels that they can respond to the

    Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, there is always room or improvement.

    Lastly, encourage the participants to review their proposed actions or evidence o improvement

    in their team. How much responsibility are they personally taking or providing evidence or

    improving the work o the team? A dispersed leadership model is one in which all people are

    encouraged to take some responsibility and ourish. Ask the participants to reect on this

    point: in what way do they oer personal leadership?

    tm. Maer rhan hon yn seiliedig ar y gred bod timau a seydliadaun ddynamig ac y byddai gorodiunrhyw dren arnynt o bosibl yn anodd.

    Gellir ei ddangos el haaliad syml:

    Section 2: (60 minutes)

    Where are we as a team? / Where am I as a leader?

    This section encourages the participant to explore their approach to team working and/or

    leadership o teams. This section is based on the belie that teams and organisations aresignifcantly dynamic and that imposing order upon them maybe raught with difculty.

    A simple equation o:

    (A) [policy is developed] + (B) [policy is communicated] = (C) [policy is implemented]

    This represents a simplistic and erroneous understanding o how teams and people in teams

    operate in large complex organisations. An alternative approach is to encourage distributed

    leadership models and encourage creativity and innovation in teams in developing and meeting

    the policy requirements. This section will provide an opportunity or team members and/or team

    leaders to examine their approach to care and treatment planning and the Measure. At this point

    you may wish to distribute Handout 2.

    Exercise 2: Statements rom the Measure

    Handout 2: Team questionnaire (TQ)

    I participants are members o the same team, they may join together to complete the team

    checklist (Handout 2). Provide participants with 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

    Encourageparticipantstobehonestandsupportiveintheiranswers.

    Following completion, seek their reections on their answers and ask i there are any action plans

    they can make to improve the eectiveness o the team or their personal approach to leadership.

    The purpose o the exercise is to encourage thought and action on:

    aiming higher or quality in the work o teams

    encouraging decisions about normative standards o record keeping, values and behavior

    the culture o the team

    Notes or acilitator: The questionnaire is an approach to encourage reection on the work

    practices o the team and team leader. Within the questionnaire there is no right or wrong answer

    to any o the items. You can put the answers on a grid (11x16) or the team questionnaire.

    Using the grids to plot responses can be helpul in drawing out discussion on the items. Where

    there is evidence o signifcant dierence o opinion, you can use this to seek a resolution to

    support consistency and standards o response around the disputed item.

    Section 3: (40 minutes)

    The limits o a team response

    This section is an opportunity to review the work o this unit so ar and consider the link to

    Additional Unit 4 Care coordination & planning: organisational responsibilities. There are alwaysgoing to be limits to what individual team can achieve and thereore it is appropriate to escalate

    issues upwards.

    This section thereore, looks at how teams may do this in a manner which encourages a

    (positive?) response.

    Exercise 3: Reviewing our abilities to respond

    Part 1:Ask to participants to identiy an item rom the Measure/Regulations/Code o Practice which may

    prove challenging to achieve. The participants are then asked in groups to review the issue and

    respond to the ollowing questions (see slide 4).

    4. How could we make things better or service users and carers around this issue?

    The purpose o this exercise is to encourage team members to exhaust their possibilities or

    action beore they consider passing on an issue about implementation o the Measure to senior

    managers. When they are certain they have done all they reasonably can, go to part 2.

    Part 2:

    This part is ocused on the process o reporting upwards. It is an attempt to identiy helpul

    practices which will acilitate a response rom senior managers. The group(s) is/are asked to writeon ip chart the ollowing (see slide 5).

    Participants are then asked to consider a plan or escalating this issue. Ask participants to

    consider the ollowing:

    2. In what timescale would you expect a response?

    3. How would you monitor progress on this issue?

    Notes or acilitator: Have copies o the Code o Practice and Regulations available or participants

    to review. As a acilitator, it is understood that you will have a good knowledge o the content o

    the legislation, so you may be able to help participants identiy some current issues.

    Questions What are you going to do dierently now?

    This is an important part o the unit and should not be avoided. The learning units are designed to

    challenge people to make a commitment to change and improve their work or care and treatment

    planning and other requirements o the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010. Thereore part

    o this commitment is a public acknowledgement o what they think they have learned and what

    immediate steps they can take to positively alter their practice. Ask the participants or at least

    one signifcant learning point and what they plan to alter as a result.
