THE DELHI governmentSaturdaycancelledallupcomingexaminationstobeconductedinstate universities, both for finalandintermediateyear/semesterstudents, arguing it would be"unfair" to hold exams as theteaching-learning process was"hampered"due toCovid.Deputy Chief Minister
ManishSisodiasaidstateuniver-sities have been asked to comeupwith "a set of parameters forevaluation on the basis of thestudents'pastperformance"andaward themdegrees.Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal also wrote to PrimeMinister Narendra ModiSaturday, suggestingthatexamsin central universities bescrapped and students be eval-uatedonthebasisof internalas-sessment and previousmarks. The University GrantsCommission(UGC),initsrevisedguidelines dated July 6, had de-cided against recommendingscrappingofexams,insteadask-inguniversitiestoconductthembySeptember-end."Students, teachers andpar-

Reputed institutions suchas IIT and NLU have alreadygivendegrees to students in thefinal year based on internal as-sessments.Why shouldn't oth-ersalsodoit?Acrossuniversitiesin theworld, the same format isbeingfollowed,"Kejriwalwrote. He also pointed out that
Delhi had decided to cancel ex-ams but a similar decision forCentraluniversitiessuchasDelhiUniversitywill have to be takenby theCentre."TheMHRDandUGCarenot

nal semester students, and savethe future of our students," theCMwrote.Sisodia, meanwhile, ex-
plained the rationale behindcancellingexamsinstateuniver-sities."It isunfairtoconductexam-
inations for students amid thepandemic, which has alreadyhampered their learning in theabsenceof regularclasses,prac-ticals and labwork. It is alsoun-fair to withhold their degreesnow, withoutwhichtheycannotstarttheirprofessionaljourney,"Sisodia said inawebcast.Arguing itwouldbedifficult
toconductexaminationsforthesemester, he said, "July is the
most important month for ex-aminations and evaluation atuniversities. Delhi governmentbelieves that in theseextraordi-narytimes,weneedtomakeex-traordinary decisions. That iswhy the Delhi government hasdecidedallupcomingexamina-tions in the Delhi StateUniversitiesshouldbecancelled.Thisincludesallsemesterandfi-nal year examinations. not affect universities likeAmbedkar University Delhi, which has already conductedevaluation for all students. "Wehave an innovative method ofcontinuous assessment whichcame in handy during thesetimes. As our online teaching-learning process went offsmoothly, wewere also able toevaluatestudentsanddeclarere-sults earlier," Vice-ChancellorAnuSinghLather said.
