WelcomeWe are delighted that you are considering applying for a place at Hatfield Visual Arts College. We are

a fully comprehensive Sixth Form, catering for all levels of ability and, being relatively small in size, we

able to deliver an educational experience which is very much focused upon the needs of each

    individual student.

If you have studied with us before, you will build upon the success that you have already experienced

and will continue to work with staff that not only know you, but know how to unlock your potential. If

you are new to our college, you will receive a warm welcome from both staff and students and will

quickly settle into life in our Sixth Form.

We have a wide range of courses to suit the varying needs and abilities of our students and have a

strong, successful partnership with Armonia Training Academy. It is our aim that all Sixth Form

students at Hatfield Visual Arts College enjoy a positive learning experience that will enable them to

fulfil their personal goals and reach their academic potential.

    What makes us different?

Hatfield Visual Arts College is not like a school or a

large Further Education College. Instead we combine

the best of both: we offer the secure, supportive

environment of a school Sixth Form with the wide

range of courses of a much larger institution.

We welcome students of any level of ability and are

one of only a small number of Sixth Forms in

Doncaster that offer courses at Levels 1, 2 and 3. We

will endeavour to meet every students individual

needs to ensure that their time here is enjoyable and

rewarding and prepares them for the next stage of

their life, be that higher education, employment or

    further training.

We look forward to working with you

    Expectations & Learning Contracts

As young adults you will be treated differently. At this level

you are given more responsibility, but in return we have

high expectations. At the start of the year you will be given a

Learning Contract outlining our expectations in relation to

attendance, behaviour, and work ethic. These are all key

    elements of students experiencing success.

    Personal Study

As a Sixth Form student you will find that not all of the

periods in the school week are taken up by timetabled

lessons. You will be given lots of opportunity during the

week for personal study time as well as taking part in our

    Community Action initiative.

    Independent Learning

The greatest difference of studying in the Sixth Form is that

you need to be more independent. It is not enough just to

attend the lessons; work set outside the lesson needs to be

completed and wider reading is essential. Being an

independent learner is a skill to be developed and will be a

focus of Form time as you begin your studies.

Dress CodeWhilst we dont have a Sixth Form uniform here at Hatfield,

we do expect students to dress appropriately in order to set a

good example to the younger students in the college. The

dress code is written and monitored by the Sixth Form

    Council.

    Learning Mentor

This person is dedicated to the Sixth Form and their role is to

support our students to ensure success. This will happen in a

variety of ways, but includes supervision of students in the study

area during non-contact time, plus allocated independent study

periods. To create a positive learning environment in the Sixth

Form area, appropriate resources for study and research into

future career plans will be provided. The Learning Mentor will

support and oversee the achievement of students, intervening in a

variety of ways if issues arise with work ethic, deadlines, work

    load and/or attendance.

    The College Day

In order to offer our students a wide range of courses, some

lessons take place from 15:00 to 16:00.

Students are expected to be on the College premises at all times

during the College day, except for lunchtime.

    EMA

Financial assistance is available to some students to enable them to

continue their studies. Further details are available from our

    College.

    Vicky Godfrey, Year 12

This is my first year in Sixth Form and I am

thoroughly enjoying it so far. It is a big change

from Year 11 as the workload has increased but

the number of lessons has decreased. There is

also a big change in how you are taught; you are

no longer a child but a young adult and the

teachers treat you as such. Teachers are alwayson hand to help and guide you, where necessary,

and the study time that you are given provides

the opportunity to complete a lot of your work

    during the College day.

I am currently studying for two A-levels and one

Level 3 BTEC qualification. I also take part in

voluntary work in the Maths Department in

which I support younger students in their lessons.

This is great for giving me an insight into what

College is like from the other side! I have also

been elected as a Form Representative and, therefore, am a member of the Sixth Form

Council. I really enjoy this, as it gives me the

opportunity to have a say in what happens in

Sixth Form and also allows me to put forward

other peoples views on all matters relating to

    life in the Sixth Form.

Within Sixth Form there are many opportunities

to take part in activities, have your say and meet

new people. During our Learning Weeks we

participate in things that we wouldnt normally

do during a normal College week. For example,

the one in October gave us the chance to

participate in things like archery, floristry, first-

aid skills, street dance, cookery, and ended with a

trip to Xscape indoor ski slope. The week was a

great deal of fun and was excellent for working

with and getting to know people that you

    wouldnt normally spend time with.

Nathan Beal, Year 13What I love about Hatfield Visual Arts College is that

youre given the independence to work by yourself, but if

you need help or extra work, your teacher is always happyto help you. This was what I was looking for when I chose

my Sixth Form; somewhere where I could have some

independence but still seek my teachers if I really needed

    them.

The key to success at Further Education is the amount ofwork you are prepared to put in yourself in your own timein order to succeed. At Hatfield, the staff are well aware of

this and always give work which stretches our abilities and

tests us in many ways. Another reason why Im so glad I

chose Hatfield is the rapport the students have with the

teachers. Now that you are older, you wish to be treated

with more respect like a young adult. The staff are well

aware of this and in the lessons this is shown by the

relationship between the student and the teacher. I would

describe it more as a mentor than a teacher, as you start to

look up to your teacher as someone who has been through

exactly what you are going through now and is able togive advice about a range of topics, such as degrees at

University or what choice to make after Sixth Form.

One reason I chose Hatfield was the increased

responsibility you had over your time and your choices.

My time here has seen me create my own environmental

group with the support of the Sixth Form staff. This group

was, from the very start, a group for the benefit of students

led by students. Another example of the new

responsibilities we, as students, share is the Sixth Form

Council. I was very lucky in my first year to join this

group of students who carry forth the comments by eachand every student about a range of topics. The Sixth Form

Council gives direct power to the students who can decideon and implement a range of ideas.

Along with the work you have to do in Sixth Form, a fair

amount of time is about developing your social skills forthe wider world. There is always a balance to Sixth Form

life regarding work and play. I believe Hatfield has got the

balance just right with supportive and enthusiastic teachers

and a Sixth Form social area that allows you to befriend

everyone you talk to. Im so glad I chose Hatfield as my

Sixth Form, its given me the right skills in this world to

strive for University and to accomplish things I would

    never have dreamed of.
