Adherence to Policy – Office hours are posted on office door. DDT website offers feedbackopportunities for students to communicate their needs or concerns. All areas listed on syllabusare covered in the semester with emphasis on problem areas. Drawings are graded with arubrics and are returned to students in cycles for student feedback. Flexible open lab timesand implementation of a due date listing helps students learn time management skills neededto thrive in the job market. Students are assisted by instructor during open lab on anindividual and group basis.

CHALLENGES: DDT uses software and hardware that is continuously and rapidly changing. Our biggestchallenge is constantly changing our program to reflect the world in which the entry leveldrafter will compete.

SUGGESTED PLAN OF ACTION:

Trenholm State Community College Page 15 / 57

Page 16: 3 UR J UD P ,Q IR UP D WLR Q 3 UR J UD P -X G J P H Q W

Software updates must be continuously changed as well as new technology purchased as thejob market dictates. The instructor's skill and proficiency must be maintained and updatedwith seminars and training to promote the newest skills taught to the student. NCCER Training programs are planned to be implemented, along with Moodle online coursesto help facilitate the needs of the student.

BREAKTHROUGH

WHO Local Motors, Phoenix

FIELD Automotive Manufacturing

ACHIEVEMENT Designing the first 3Dprinted car.

Jay Rogers has the keys to a 3Dprinted car—in fact, the firstever 3D printed car. It's a humblemachine, an overgrown gokart built around a 3D printed tub. The 48volt electric drivetrain isbolted to an aluminum subframe in back, and the seats are printed into the tub and covered withscraps of padding. The contraption looks like a misbegotten extraterrestrial rover, but Rogers, cofounder and CEO of smallbatch car company Local Motors, thinks the prototype represents arevolutionary kind of transportation: simple, light, inexpensive, and highly personalized. "There are25,000 parts in a normal production car," Rogers says. Local's first production 3Dprinted car, asporty twoseater named Strati, will use, by his count, about 64.

Operation of Equipment: There are a certain number of computer problems that are to beexpected in a program that relies so heavily on computers and software programs, howeverthe IT department is located in the LT and are quick to respond on technical issues. Relevance of Equipment: In 2014, the DDT department purchased a UPrint 3D printer andtablets from recommendations of the Advisory Committee.

CHALLENGES: The DDT department utilizes constant input from the advisory committee andindustry leaders in trying to "stay ahead of the curve" with software updates. This challenge has been met by seminars conducted by company owners, professional architects and engineers. See attached seminars.

SUGGESTED PLAN OF ACTION:The DDT department emphasizes a continual professionaldialog with industry and local businesses. Plans for the allocation of funds for a 3D scannerhave been proposed by the Advisory Committee.

Student Satisfaction The student satisfaction for school year 20132014 showed a goodexcellent rate of satisfaction. The previous years were a period of building for the DDTdepartment. This indicates the direction in which the program is headed has been effective.

Completer Satisfaction: The surveys from 20092014 the DDT department showed a 100%satisfaction rate. This indicates the effort to prepare students for the workworld has beeneffective.

Alumni Satisfaction: There were no excellent ratings except in the school year 20132014.This trend seems to indicate that the program has grown, correcting the previous trend of lowstudent enrollment.

Student Advising Experience: This is an ongoing challenge because of the difficulty ofthe Millennial student to attend school on a full time schedule and balance the economic andfamily responsibilities.

Narrative STRENGTHS:Trenholm State Technical college has been very good at updating software and computers ona cyclic basis. The DDT Department is ahead of the curve on teaching and suppliying thestudents with the latest BIM software such as ; Revit Architecture, SolidWorks. Inventor.

CHALLENGES: Keeping on the technological curve is both challenging and exciting. New technology demandsprofessional development and training. Alloting time for seminars such as AUGI is going torequire the addition of adjunct faculity. Recruiting from River Region will require aggressivemarketing to both high school and adult population.

SUGGESTED PLAN OF ACTION:An increase marketing of the college as a whole and the program in particular in thecommunity and the industries locally would increase awareness of availability of well trainedworkers. In this environment of career change there are more potential adults students to bereached. Radio, tv and internet ads could be rotated to feature each program individually aswell as using the high school’s internal televised announcement system. The program would benefit from secretarial staff support enabling the instructor to devotemore attention to actual teaching.Professional development seminars could address issues primary to the actual day to daychallenges faced in the classroom and balancing the demands for both teaching andmaintaining a program effectively. The college as a whole could benefit by a greater collaboration between programs which areinterdependent in the real work world. For instance, DDT department could incorporate acollaborative project with the Machine Tools or Graphic Design Dept, thereby benefiting thestudents by creating a real world environment.

Advisory council meetings would have increased participation by industry leaders if modernmultimedia means of virtual meetings were ( i.e. Gotomeeting.com) available for use by thedepartments.

Licensure/Certification Rate:NA Advisory Committee Satisfaction: The surveys completed by members of the AdvisoryCommittee indicate a rising level of satisfaction with the DDT program. Several major changesto the program were made on the suggestion of the Advisory committee resulting directly tothe increase of satisfaction.

CHALLENGES: Most of the surveys that are listed above indicate that overall satisfaction ofthe program is above average. The challenges for the program are advertising and promotionof the uniqueness of the program in the River Region. Such funding has been reduced due tobudgeting reductions throughout the college. Some students have stated that they didn'tknow that Trenholm had a drafting department. The need for professional draftsmen with BIMtraining has been established. Workshops with software vendors have emphasized the everpresent need for software updates. Many businesses are not aware of the latest advances intechnical software that could increase their profits. Advertising will help promote the need andawareness of the program. SUGGESTED PLAN OF ACTION: Advertise locally both TV and Radio along with social mediasuch as DDT website. Continue to implement changes as suggested by advisory board. Asnew technology develops, the DDT program will incorporate curriculum and hardware to meetthe challenges. Dean's Narrative

NOTE: The narrative should include recommendations and commendations on thePROGRAM, STUDENTS, FACULTY, and ASSESSMENT AND PLANNING. Given the existing strengths and challenges of the program, recommendationsTrenholm State Community College Page 54 / 57

Page 55: 3 UR J UD P ,Q IR UP D WLR Q 3 UR J UD P -X G J P H Q W

Given the existing strengths and challenges of the program, recommendationsshould be made to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the program. How could the curriculum of this program be improved over the next five years? Inorder to expand the Drafting & Design curriculum, the instructor should seek professionaldevelopment opportunities on a continuous basis that will afford him with anticipated futuretrends in the Drafting industry. Additionally, the program review revealed a deficiency withthe DDT instructor holding Advisory Council meetings and administering Employer Surveys in aconsistent manner. Industry partnerships are essential to Trenholm State students obtainingemployment and/or internships prior to graduation; as well as, instructors keeping abreast ofindustry trends. With that in mind, the DDT instructor should better utilize this resourceavailable to him. Moreover, the program coordinator and instructor(s) should work withAlabama Community College System Office and the programs Advisory Committee to meetthe needs/demands of local business and industry. What actions would be required to accomplish the improvement given current levelof resources (faculty, staff, facilities, equipment, etc.)The resources available throughout the college are sufficient to accomplish the recommendedimprovements recruitment, retention, increase graduation rates, professionaldevelopment/training, etc. Provide recommendations and commendations regarding program improvement anddevelopment. The Dean of Instruction will meet with the DDT Program Coordinator and Division Director todiscuss areas of concern identified in the program review to devise a plan of action forimprovement. The areas of focus will be on recruitment, retention, professional development, timely administration of surveys and reports (e.g., Employer Satisfaction Surveys, AlumniSatisfaction Surveys, Advisory Committee Surveys, etc). Additionally, a major concern is in terms of the 3year average of program graduates. TheDrafting & Design program had a 3year average of 5.6, which is below Alabama CommissionHigher Education (ACHE) 7.5 standard. As a result, the program coordinator will need tocreate a plan of study that creates a pathway to completion in a more sufficient timeframe. Discuss the overall health of the program? Overall, the DDT program is a healthy and steady. However, based on the caliber of programand opportunities for growth, the need to make these adjustments are vital to sustaining thisprogram. Comment on any program specific concerns (i.e., professional accreditationconcerns).Increase in enrollment, retaining students through completion, industry outreach, professionaldevelopment; and, responsiveness to deadlines. Please make any comments regarding aspects of this program not covered in thisreview which you think should be described. Trenholm State Community College Page 55 / 57
