A funny thing happened on the way to better hearing...I had been trying to get my doctor to have a hearing test but he didn’t take my advice any better than I’m sure some of his patients take his—until...

I called to cancel an appointment. Apparently his front office gal was busy so he answered the phone. When I told him I had to reschedule, he told me I was calling less than 24 hours before the appointment and he’d have to bill me for it.

I said, “I understand, but I just can’t come in tomorrow even if you have to bill me.”

the last tool was laid down on October 31, 1941. An enormously dangerous job, though not one worker lost his life.Seven years into the project the first carved image—George Washington—was completed. Thomas Jefferson’s likeness was originally carved to the right of Washington but after nearly two years of drilling, the granite image became so badly cracked it was dynamited off the mountain and re-carved in its current location. Jefferson’s image was completed in 1936. Lincoln’s image was finished in 1937 and the sculptors finalized the face of Teddy Roosevelt in 1939.

Borglum spent the next two years detailing and smoothing the rough hewn surfaces of the giant monolith. When Borglum died suddenly in March, 1941, the project passed to his son, Lincoln, to complete. Funds ran out six months later and, due to the looming World War II, Congress

refused to allocate more money for the project, declaring it officially finished.Originally estimated to cost $460,000 (over $6 million today), funding was difficult to amass but a creative strategy brought attention to the program when sculptor Borglum and then - U.S. Senator Peter Norbeck invited President Calvin Coolidge to visit the site.Knowing Coolidge to be an avid fisherman, workers stocked the stream with thousands of trout every night. Impressed with the superior fishing and intrigued with the evolving granite carving, Coolidge stayed for two months and became convinced to fund the project with Federal funding. The final cost was nearly one million dollars (equal to $16.8 million today).

Each statue measures the height of a six story building (60 feet); the eyes are eleven feet wide, their mouths measure approximately eighteen feet across and the noses average 20 feet long. Over two million visitors view the gargantuan heads of the four U.S. Presidents at the “Shrine of Democracy” each year. This year, the granite memorial celebrates its Diamond Anniversary.

Quite some time ago I had a fairly good-sized garden, about 30’ x 30’. I had planted peppers, corn, lettuce, carrots, squash, green beans and many varieties of tomatoes. As many of

you know from having a garden, there is something rewarding and fulfilling about the whole process of planting, harvesting and consuming what was grown. I don’t have that kind of space in my current back yard, but I did find a pretty good area to plant some tomatoes. They had grown to only about half of the total height I had expected. As any gardener will tell you, it’s always important to keep an eye on the plants for many reasons so that’s what Buddy and I were doing one afternoon last month.

I noticed we were getting some pretty good-sized green tomatoes growing on the vines, all staked nice and straight, so I wanted to take a picture and send it to a friend who is a gardener. I positioned my phone to take the picture, pointing it right at the tomato plant. I could see it on my screen very clearly. In addition to the plant, there was a snake about three feet from my shoe! I jumped at least 10 feet in the air, dropped the phone and yelled. I’m sure that’s exactly what you’re NOT supposed to do.

The snake started to move. That’s when Buddy came running over. He started barking and running around the snake. The snake hightailed it out of our yard through the fence and up into the bushes of the common area. As it was slithering away, I realized it was simply a gardener snake. But any time I see a snake around here, I automatically think it’s a rattlesnake.Thank you, Buddy, for protecting me! I made sure to tell Mariela—he needs all the points he can get!

delivers true listening enjoyment to hearing impaired people like you—even in noisy environments:• Synergy: an innovative, minuscule

sound-processing system built right into the hearing instruments that allows easier, more comfortable listening. Less straining to hear and understand!

• The hearing aids automatically adjust themselves to make speech clearer when sound around you changes (i. e., an audience clapping at the end of a performance).

• Using six different background noise filters Synergy screens out background sounds then amplifies soft-spoken speech sounds for precise word clarity. (An example of this would be having a conversation in a car, or while taking a walk.)

• Wireless connection from your TV to your hearing aids! You hear the TV clearly and at the volume where you like it while others in the room can adjust the volume where they like it.

• Less adjusting! Easy to use. The individual hearing aids (right and left) communicate with each other to efficiently process sounds and respond to provide more natural-like hearing.

Whether you have never worn hearing aids or you have worn them for years, the only way to tell how Audibel’s hearing aid features can help you is to wear the new technology in your own ears and hear the difference for yourself!Ask to have a demo during your next check-up, or call us today to schedule an appointment specifically for our live “Hear the Difference” listening demonstration. And tell us you read about it in the newsletter. We love to know we’re keeping you informed!

— POTPOURRI —Sherill Fox Says Good-bye

Everyone knows that “all good things must come to an end” and,

according to the Bible, per Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens”. Now, sadly, this is the end of the road for my long and blessed journey with Advanced Ear Care. On 09/03/1996, I started working for a wonderful man, Stuart Spencer, who said at the close of my interview, “Well, let’s give it a shot.” That was 20 years ago. So, dear friends, as I sit here with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, it’s time to say good-bye. I wish all of you God’s perfect blessings. May His gracious hand be upon each of you and may you feel His presence and His love for all your days. I will sincerely miss you. Some of you I will see again; you know who you are. Much love,

Sherill

Tinnitus and Hearing LossTinnitus (pronounced both “Tin-EYE-tus” and “TIN-i-tus”), or “ringing in the ears”, affects about one in five Americans. While not generally considered a serious condition itself, tinnitus is believed to signal a more predominant underlying problem and can adversely affect one’s quality of life. Tinnitus—itself a sign of nerve damage—can be an indicator of some measure of current or future hearing loss.Chronic stress has been known to play a significant role in tinnitus. Stressful life events such as illness, loss of a spouse or job, divorce, surgery, etc. have been determined to trigger the onset of tinnitus, or can cause a graduation from mild to serious tinnitus. However, many people don’t experience any of these situations and start to hear ringing, buzzing or other noises. One lady told me she heard Christian gospel

singing all the time. She said, “the crazy thing about that is that I’m Jewish!”There appears to be a direct connection between tinnitus and hearing loss. New technology inside today’s hearing aids addresses these serious concerns. This allows us to use tinnitus therapy to often relieve the annoying levels of tinnitus sound to make you more comfortable and hear better at the same time! This is another perfect reason to visit us and take advantage of our Do the Demo, Hear the Difference! live demonstration (see related article, page 1).Experience for yourself how today’s sophisticated hearing aids can help prevent or minimize tinnitus while enriching your daily hearing experiences.
