Housing Department
I recently attended a CMHC Workshop in
Vancouver. The workshop was Charging and
Collecting for Housing Programs and Services on
Reserve.
True costs
- We learned about true costs of delivering rental
units on reserve and what happens when
members don't pay. When members don't pay,
maintenance and repairs cannot be done because
there isn't enough revenue coming in from rent
payments to do them. When maintenance and
repairs are being done the housing units
deteriorate and end up in a state of disrepair,
which means the band has to apply for renovation
dollars to bring them back to a standard living
unit again. In most cases the funds applied for are
not enough so the house doesn't get completely
renovated and only health & safety is considered.
Mold being a major health issue.
Housing & Rental Policy
- We also learned that implementing housing and
rental policies and following them is essential to a
viable housing stock on Reserve. If they are not
implemented and followed the number of units we
need to build continue to decline because of non-
payment of rents and a continued rise in arrears
each and every year! With a continued rise in
rental arrears every year CMHC sees that we are
not abiding by a policy or a rental agreement
which results in no funding for future housing for
our 70+ community members who are waiting on
the housing list.
Community involvement
- Community involvement is one of the key
ingredients to a viable and sustainable housing
portfolio in a community. All community members
need to understand that Housing is an asset and
once they are run down and in a state of disrepair
they are no longer worth what it cost to build
them. Community members need to understand

that Polices and rental agreements need to be

Chief and Council
- Implementing Policies and rental agreements for
a sustainable and viable housing portfolio is the
key to attaining better living qualities for the
people and setting standards to be followed by all
community members. Supporting staff and
members equally with no exception to any rule of
the policies or rental agreements is a step in the
right direction to achieving this goal for all
members of the community.

Yo!
I am very pleased to announce that the Elder's Program has been running quite well. Here is a sneak peek at
what they have been up to during the last few weeks.
Tuesdays: walking club at 1pm. The elders meet here at the Center. Depending on the weather, they either go up
and walk the track or use their gym equipment if it's raining,
Wednesdays: Elder's Luncheon 12pm, has now been changed to Wednesdays, due to numerous office closures
that fall on Mondays.
Thursdays: We tried to have drop in swim at 11am-12pm at the pool, unfortunately this has not worked out. So
after Spring Break, the Elders will have story time with the nursery students from GN school. Time to be
determined.
Fridays: ECM-Elder's Council Meetings every Friday
Also, every other Friday I assist Chelsey with the Good Food Bags
Over the last month or so now, we have been working on the Policy for the Elder's Van. It is still in draft, but
we have attached a copy for your references.
The Elders would also like to kindly remind you that their facility is no longer available to the community for
personal activities (dinners, parties, baby shower, etc.)
Since the second tv was stolen from the Elder's Center last year, the Elders had a meeting and all agreed to close
their facility to community functions. They take pride in what they have and do not want anything else to
happen.
The facility is available for work purposes only during office hours of 8am-4pm.
Thank you to Chelsey & Cassidy Walkus for being such great help these past few weeks with the program. Also
to Brian David & Parker Humchitt. You guys all rock!
I will be off on holidays starting March 16 to March 27. I will return back to the office March 30. Should you
need to contact me, you can leave me a message at the Band Office and I will get back to you as soon as I
return.
I hope you all have a great Spring Break!
Gilakasla

Call out list
Hello G-N Community!
I am happy to say I Bernadine Clayton will now be taking over the call out list.
How it works
Go the GN office to fill out the Form. The GN office passes the information to the interested member in
the Port Hardy area who are on the call out list. This is for Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw members only.
Friendly reminder you do not have to contact me in any way because I have all you information all you
have to do is wait for a call.
First on, first served in rotation
The job call-out list works on a first come, first served basis. When job notices arrive at the office, we
match the job to people interested in that type of work. You will be called in order your name was added
to the call out list. Once you’ve been called out, the next job posting goes to the next interested person on
the list. When we reach the bottom of the list we start at the top again and your turn will come around
again. So it is a rotating list, everyone on the list will be called in turn.
We keep track of when and how many times we try to contact you. If we cannot contact you using the
information you provided or you do not respond in a reasonable time, we need to move onto the next
person because the employer will go elsewhere to fill the position.
Improving your chances
Keep your information up to date especially if your contact information changes. If we can’t contact
you we have to move onto the next person on the list as employer will look elsewhere for workers.
If you receive notice of work and do not want to or unable to work, please let me know and we will
move onto the next person.
Tell me if you are no longer interested in more, it will save calling you, your name can be put back on the
list at a later time

Please come to the GN Band office to do another form with your accurate information and new phone number.

year. I’ve included another list of acceptable and
unacceptable items for the recycling depot.
The hours are 1-5pm
-Monday
-Wednesday

I’d like to ask people not to drop things off after hours.
Dogs and birds have been making a mess of garbage been
left behind and other Items such as beds, couches, boxes’
has been getting wet and makes it difficult to deal with
once I’m back to work. So please wait until the facility is
open and I will be happy to assist you. Please remind
children not to climb the fences while depot is closed
would hate for someone to get hurt if there is no one
around.
