ADRA (Adventist Disaster and Relief Agency) began its mission in 1984 as a global humanitarian outreach program for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It has always been our goal to reach people in the developing world and bring life-changing resources when and where they’re needed most.

A Fresh Start for a Forgotten VillageThe villagers of Uma Tolu in East Timor were used to traveling long, treacherous distances to get water from a river far outside of town. They were beyond grateful when ADRA arrived and drilled 10 hand-pump wells with washing stations throughout the community.

Villager Veronica Suarez used to make three trips to the river each day for water, but that has now changed. “I want to thank ADRA very much for coming here and drilling new wells so we’ll all have clean water,” says Veronica.

By providing clean water and addressing other basic needs such as hygiene education, ADRA is improving access to safe water, one of life’s most precious gifts.

Improving Women’s Livelihoods in the Dry Zone of Myanmar

Women who head their households are learning food production skills thanks to ADRA’s new Strengthening Livelihoods in the Dry Zone of Myanmar (SLIM) project. The first year of the three-year program, taking place in one of Myanmar’s least developed regions, saw 150 households (mostly widows) participate in the food production group to learn food drying and processing.

“We all make the food products at home, but invest in the raw materials together,” says Masanymint, a single mother supporting five children. “Now I can afford good food for my children and provide the books, uniforms, and school supplies they need,” she adds.

Hope and Health Bloom in the Dust Isoahene’s vivid green vegetable garden in a dust-colored district of Madagascar demonstrates the great potential for development in her poverty-stricken region.

People in Isoahene’s remote village were malnourished from a lack of healthy food when ADRA arrived to begin our work. The only vegetables growing were sweet potato, cassava, and corn, so the community welcomed an introduction to cabbage, carrots, and lettuce and loved learning how to grow and enjoy them at their freshest.

Now Isoahene shares the garden’s harvest with her children, and other women who head their own households do the same. The garden crops have not only given their families better health, but also provided an income for these women. Just one day’s worth of sales in the village market is enough to buy them basic food supplies for four days.

Light Bearers to the Amazon

Leo and Jessie Halliwell began their Amazon River health ministry as missionaries around 70 years ago. Today, ADRA continues their work by sending Luzeiro (“light bearer”) health boats to indigenous communities isolated from the rest of South America. Most of the villages lack sanitation and use the river for drinking water, leaving them vulnerable to bacterial infections and parasites.

Martia Lucia, age 35, has lived in the Roca village all her life. The nearest town is a 29-hour journey in her family’s dugout canoe, making doctor appointments difficult. The mayor’s office sends their own medical team out only two days a year. “I am glad ADRA is here,” she says. “They built latrines in our community, and they bring medical and dental care to us.”

The Luzeiro program is vital to those who would otherwise be cut off from the basic medical care that you and I take for granted.
