The 7 Asian and 3 European carriers surveyed by Alphaliner have recorded the highest number of vessel disposals in the last 15 months.

The 10 carriers disposed of a total of 417,000 teu, including the scrapping of 256,000 teu of order tonnage.

The Asian carriers disposed of 16% of their owned fleet during the period while the European carriers sold 6% of their owned fleet.3839

All of the Asian carriers with significant vessel disposals in the past year saw their market share diminish except for Hanjin.

Hanjins move to sell and leaseback 13 containerships to KAMCO last year did not result in a fall in market share for the carrier as it retained operating control of the ships. In fact, Hanjin regained some of the market share it lose in recent years as it re-entered the Top 10. Hanjin was the world in 1998 following its acquisition of DSR senator but has been gradually losing share following a string of poor result.4041
