ANNUAL REPORT-2017 “During our 45 days training at SEWA-Gujarat we not only received skill-based trainings on Garmenting and Food Processing but we were also trained on how to present, promote and sell our finished products in the market. So it was like an A- to- Z program for us!” – Najebaben Nuri – Garmenting Master Trainer - Kabul, Afghanistan “We have learnt a lot during our trainings at SEWA. We did not expect to learn so much. We have radically changed. We now have immense knowledge; not only related to weaving or garmenting but also related to significant things like values. We have seen the good things and good work that SEWA is involved in. After having closely observed - the never-ending support, love, care, working together in a group, helping other sisters etc - upon our return we want to share these observations with our sisters so that we too can start working in a similar manner. We also learnt how to work in an effective way and work for the community and not for individual benefits.” Namponthiu – North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) Master Trainer - Jalukie, Nagaland “I learned that teamwork bonds people together, helps fill in the deficit gaps and smoothens the path leading to drop in stress. When I return to Kenya I shall reconstruct our strategic and business plans to a simple and easily-understandable format just like the ones SEWA uses” - Banisben Wairimu- CBO Secretary - Laikipia, Kenya “This training will be extremely beneficial to me in my work and in my life as it covers simple but important subjects like how discussion can resolve conflicts peacefully and enable us to take correct decisions; how to alleviate stress; how to manage your time and more important how crucial it is to give time to yourself; points to keep in mind before investing your money etc. I am grateful to SEWA and SEWA Manager Ni School for giving me the opportunity to be part of this PACE (Aavkar) Training” – Rashmikaben Parmar - ROTI Master Trainer- Bayad, Sabarkantha Presented by: SEWA Manager Ni School (SMS) SEWA MANAGER NI SCHOOL

SEWA MANAGER NI SCHOOL

SEWA Manager Ni School is pleased to release its 2017 Progress Report, tracking advances made across the skill building of grass roots women and micro entrepreneurs. The year 2017 for SEWA Manager Ni School (SMS) has been a year of learning, evolving and working towards sustainability... we faced many challenges which prompted us to push ourselves to new limits, become innovative and emerge with new insights. Congruent to the demand we were open to change, modify or recreate the modality to work with our members; albeit, without compromising on our core values and our zeal to create a cadre of ‘Best Grassroots Managers.’ The path for this work has never been smooth, and we have faltered, learnt and evolved into being more rooted and compassionate. We have also strengthened and streamlined our interventions through regular monitoring, evaluation and timely strategic decision- making throughout the organisation. Amidst all of this, we are kept motivated when the members we work with emerge as champions and start their own enterprises. This year we were fortunate enough to see many such moments, and we would like to give you a glimpse of some of these through this Annual Report. 2017 was an important year for SMS. With the support of our members, donors, partners and other stakeholders, we were able to achieve significant success. Key highlights of all our activities are detailed below in tabular form:

SEWA’s “Training on Skill Development in Retail to Increase Livelihood Opportunities” (ROTI)

program is uniquely tailored to the needs of low-income women and youth. However, the

ROTI

year 2017 marked the formal conclusion of this innovative program. But SEWA believes in

continuity of work even post completion of the program. The thrust is on making the

program sustainable and creating a sense of ownership. The main highlights of the ROTI

program are as below :-

Training provided to a total of 95 Master Trainers; out of which 55 trainers are

from Gujarat, 7 trainers from Rajasthan and the remaining 33 trainers are from

North Eastern States.

Training provided to a total of 25,770 women and youth hailing from rural, peri-

urban, and urban communities across India.

Placement provided to 9912 ROTI trainees. They have been placed in a variety of

jobs including retail stores, supermarkets, insurance and pharmaceutical

companies; and some of these trainees are also part of livelihood generation

activities including starting their own micro-enterprises and selling spices from

SEWA farmers (RUDI).

Through ROTI training a personal and professional transformation has been

created in the Master Trainers. They are more confident, better trainers, and

engaging more substantively in their communities.

Finalised the six-day ROTI module in Gujarati- Hindi- English Languages.

Candidates who successfully completed the ROTI Training commended on 1

March at the Felicitation Ceremony organised with the support of Walmart and

Global Fairness Initiative in the presence of CEO- Walmart India Shree Krish Iyer.

During this event Krishbhai also interacted with ROTI Master Trainers to learn

from their experience sharing.

SMS developed E-module on "Training on Skill Development in Retail to increase

Livelihood Opportunities"

Self Learning E-module launched by Shree Krish Iyer, CEO-Walmart India during

the Felicitation Ceremony held on 1 March.

A video capturing the impact developed along with the documentation of the

entire process.

SEWA and NERLP have entered into a Contract to facilitate setting up of 2 Community Learning Business Resource Centres (CLBRCs) one each at South Sikkim and Nagaland (Peren District). The main objective of this partnership is to identify, plan and implement the need-based activities to make these Centres self-sustainable; to identify skill gaps and ways to fill up the same. Under this newly launched initiative the following activities have been carried out:

SMS held - interactive brainstorming workshops with the North East Project Team, Federation Leaders, SHG Leaders, Area Coordinators, Community Members etc;

NORTH EAST RURAL LIVELIHOOD PROJECT (NERLP)

experience sharing; orientation sessions; field visits to the local markets and weaving centres; sessions for interacting with farmers and visiting their houses

Conducted an Assessment Study in Sikkim as well as Nagaland to understand the ground level reality. Based on the finding/s of the assessment study identified the interventions and focus areas like Garmenting, Weaving, Cosmetic and Essential Products, E-Commerce Platforms, Food Processing, Bakery, Disaster Mitigation, Home Stay, Community Mobilizing, Farming etc.

Regular visits - of one-month duration were conducted by the SEWA team comprising of Master Trainers from different districts like Gandhinagar, Anand and Surendranagar – to Nagaland as well as to Sikkim - with the objective of capacity building of community members.

A total of 167 master trainers - 35 from Nagaland and 132 from Sikkim - have undergone Training on Leadership and Group Management, Garment, Weaving, Cosmetic and Essential Products (Soap Making and Shampoo Making), Bakery, E-Commerce Platform and Disaster Mitigation.

A total of 581 sisters in Nagaland and 867 sisters in Sikkim have undergone Training on Leadership and Group Management.

SMS is providing continuous handholding support for - functioning and technical

guidance for CLBRC establishment; promoting 2 value chains; and developing 20

micro-enterprises.

Advance Training in Garmenting and Micro-Enterprise training is being arranged in

Ahmedabad in the year 2018.

‘Hum Sab Ek’ is one more step to help SEWA members and their families move towards employment and self-reliance in this changing economy without compromising on their SEWA values. By sharing their free space (home) with tourists (national and international) members can reap multiple tangible and intangible benefits along with showcasing our rural talent and rich cultural heritage; and bridging the urban-rural gap.

‘Hum Sab Ek’ reaffirms the Indian ethos of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (Guest is God)…

Under this initiative SMS has conducted several awareness trainings, meetings and workshops to give an insight into this new concept to our members so that after attending

HUM SAB EK

this training they can cascade the information in their respective villages and mobilize more villagers to join and benefit from this program.

In the month of July SMS Master Trainer conducted a Testing Session of this Rural Tourism Training Module for 20 Agewaans and Workers at our Ganeshpura CLBRC.

Again in August, SMS Master Trainer conducted a Train the Trainer Session for 12 participants at Surendranagar District of Gujarat. The training was attended by SEWA Executive Members, Association Leaders, Organizers and the Patan Team.

These ‘Hum Sab Ek’ training/s have made a huge difference in the lives of the members as they have -

◊ Enhanced their livelihood opportunities and increased source of income ◊ Enabled them to gain an understanding about hospitality and the service industry ◊ Made them tech savvy as they need to – be able to do online booking, check the

orders, view guest feedback etc ◊ Learnt the need for and process of regularly updating their house profile on the

website ◊ Sharpened their communication skills as they effectively respond to queries ◊ Widened their understanding and acceptance with regards to the culture, language

and cuisine of other States and countries

In the coming year, SMS looks forward to more members participating in ‘Hum Sab Ek’ as it is an initiative which serves multiple objectives, as listed above, with minor input costs

SMS launched a new initiative in 2017, termed ‘AAVKAR’ (Welcome) to expand livelihood opportunities of members and to empower them through skill building in 2017. Under this initiative, SMS has partnered with GAP Inc (USA) for implementation of a 3-year project to support P.A.C.E. (Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement) to reach out to 2,70,000 women. Through this initiative SMS aims to strengthen the livelihood of women by providing them with training on skills like – grooming, effective communications, problem solving, decision making, financial literacy, and time and stress management. Thereby, bringing about a notable shift in their perception of themselves and their abilities. The ‘AAVKAR’ Program strives to build a cadre of 150 Master Trainers each of whom will then cascade this training to 1800 women thereby increasing the reach of this training to the targeted 2,70,000 members.

AAVKAR (GAP INC. P.A.C.E)

The AAVKAR Program started with a five-day training from 20-25 November, by the P.A.C.E team for the first batch of 28 SEWA Master Trainers. SMS anticipates this program to be a life-changer for the participants as it will enable them to become better at - communicating, managing their finances, taking care of their health and planning for the future.

Annually SMS hosts many dignitaries/ visitors/ interns. In 2017 also SMS conducted orientation sessions for these visitors to ensure their smooth intake; familiarize them with SMS activities including need, launch, objectives, projects and services etc. The tools and methodology for these orientation sessions comprises videos, interactions with Master Trainers as well as field visits. PROMOTIONAL PLATFORMS

PARTNERSHIPS

Alike past years, SMS continued to partner with many academic institutions, corporate organizations, government bodies and technical firms. Some of the prominent partnerships include:

IMAGO Global Grassroots

Pyxera Global

Uni Trust Surajba Mahila Arts College

AAVKAR (GAP Inc. P.A.C.E.)

North East Rural Livelihood Project

Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)

Coady International Institute

Expressing solidarity to our theme of ‘A penny saved is a penny earned’ SMS implemented many cost cutting measures in the year 2017–

Ongoing monitoring of phone analysis and phone bill

Adopted ‘No wastage policy’ and trying to reduce the use of paper like taking prints on both sides of the paper, maintaining digital data and photos etc.

Close monitoring of housekeeping, pantry and electricity bills (minimizing AC usage; switching off PCs during meetings/lunch breaks) to cut down on costs

Yet for all that has changed, there are many challenges that still remain. We’ve come a long way since the SMS was founded in 2005. We are making real progress. Now it’s time to put our foot on the accelerator and drive the sector forward!

“The Master Trainers explained complicated accounting operations in such a simple and easy-to-understand way” – Nirmalaben - Nepal

“What I learnt from this training was that before I go ahead and deliver training/s my basics should be absolutely clear. And I shall ensure that I give my 100% to whatever I do. I really liked the training methodology and the thrust laid by the trainer on how to positively face critical situations in life” - Google Master Trainer- Hiteshaben Jhala

“I learnt through this Time Management Training how I waste my time – by blindly working without

proper planning. Due to this not only does my work get spoilt but time is also lost and my livelihood

also is affected” – Ashaben Parmar - Battikada, Sagvada

ECONOMIC DRIVE AND ADMINISTRATIVE MEASURES

“I learnt from the Effective Personality Training Program, why and how to keep my nails, teeth and hair clean. This training by SMS is very important for me because if I follow hygiene and remain well- groomed then my children too will observe and learn the same and their personality will develop accordingly” - Urmilaben Ahari - Beraniya, Sagvada

“I really found the sessions on how to use sanitary napkins, gender difference and the menstrual cycle to be extremely informative”- Ashaben- Sagvada, Rajasthan

“Technology can help market and promote a product better and faster. My take-away/s from this program – always have a backup plan ready; use basic resources for production; networking is a strength; decision- making should always be participatory.” - Veronicah Kemunto – Laikipia Produce and Marketing Cooperative Society-Kenya

“I really liked the unique way in which the training program was set up and delivered especially the ways in which the training was made more engaging by deploying tools like stories, videos and field visits”.- Kabitaben - Nepal

“I have been working with SEWA since the last 20 years and am currently selling RUDI products

(spices). I attended the ROTI Training and I am so glad that I did so! Earlier I used to face a lot of

difficulty in selling. Compared to the market, the cost of our product is high, the quality is good and

the weight is more too. Earlier I was not able to point out these differences but now I am able to

convince my customers easily. I conduct a live demonstration by showing the products – measuring

and weighing the products in front of them; and then I explain to them that even though the cost of

the RUDI product is high the quality is better. I have learnt that if the shop is located at a central

place, the packing is good, products are kept in an attractive manner and the customers will notice

and buy the product. My customer interaction has become better as I behave with them in a nice

manner. – Chanchalben Jagdishbhai Vania – RUDIben – Sanand

“Currently, I am running a small enterprise i.e. flour mill and against grinding various grains and pulses, I charge INR 3 to 4 per kilogram from my customers. My earning from this enterprise is around INR 1500 to INR 1700/- per month. To start this enterprise I availed of a loan of INR 40,000/- from my group and constructed a shed. I used to operate the flour mill but was unaware as to how to manage my enterprise which I learnt from this training provided by SEWA Manager Ni School. In one of the sessions, SMS taught us how to manage a group enterprise. I was very impressed with that session. Now, I manage my enterprise in such a systematic manner, that my performance and income both have increased.”- Bishnu Maya – SHG Member – Samsaybong, Sikkim
