Rocha MedalA Bronze Medal and cash prize has been awardedannually since 1982 by the ISRM to honour thememory of Past President Manuel Rocha and to rec-ognize outstanding young researchers in the fieldof Rock Mechanics.

The award shall be for an outstanding doctoralthesis in rock mechanics or rock engineering. Thethesis must have qualified the candidate for a doc-torate or the equivalent. To be considered for theaward, a candidate must be nominated within twoyears of the date of the official doctoral degree cer-tificate. The nomination should be submitted tothe appropriate ISRM Regional Vice-President byregistered letter, and may be presented by the nom-inee, the nominee’s National Group or some otherperson or organization acquainted with the nomi-nee’s work. The nomination should include the fol-lowing supporting information:� A one page curriculum vitae, including the

name, nationality, place and date of birth ofthe nominee; also position, address, telephoneand fax numbers;� A thesis summary in one of the official lan-

guages of the Society, preferably English, ofabout 5,000 words, detailed enough to conveythe full impact of the thesis, and accompaniedby selected tables and figures, with headingsand captions also in English;� One copy of the complete thesis and one copy of

the doctoral degree certificate;� A letter of copyright release, allowing the ISRM to

make copies for review & selection purposes only.

Nominations for the 2005 Rocha Medal must be received by 31 December 2003.

Supplementary details of the selection procedure, conferring ofthe award, etc., are provided in ISRM By-Law No. 7, found onpages 30–31 of the ISRM Directory for 2000. National Groups andCorresponding Members will be officially reminded by theSecretariat as the deadline approaches, but are encouraged to con-sider possible nominees and to recommend names to the appro-priate ISRM Regional Vice-President as early as possible.

2002 ISRM Board Meetings

The ISRM Board met at the Madeira Tecnopoloon 23 November 2002. The meeting tookplace in conjunction with the ISRM

International Symposium “EUROCK 2002,” alsoheld in Madeira from 25 to 28 November.

The meeting chaired by the President of theISRM, Prof. Marc Panet, was attended by all theVice Presidents of the respective geographical areasexcept Vice President for Africa.

Matters as finances, budget for 2003, progress inthe organisation of the 10th Congress, to be held inSouth Africa in 2003, first steps for the organisationof the 11th Congress to be held in Portugal in 2007,selection of Symposia to be endorsed by the ISRM,activity of ISRM Commissions and of the InterestGroups, ISRM News Journal, as well as other mattersof interest to the Society, were dealt with. An actionplan for improving the ISRM activity and raisingmembership was considered, the idea of creating anew Website for the Society under a new concept ofa Communication Platform to be developed andimplemented so as to enable greater benefits andlower expenses having been introduced.

Rocha Medal 2003The Board, acting as the Rocha Award Committee,selected the prize-winning Ph.D. thesis for 2003from among the six outstanding shortlisted thesesfor that year. The thesis “A Relative Moment TensorInversion Technique Applied to Seismicity Inducedby Mining” by Dr. Lindsay Marguerite Andersenwas selected. This work, supervised by Dr. A.Cichowicz, was submitted in 2001, for the degree ofDoctor of Philosophy to the Faculty of Science,University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg.The award will be conferred at the 10th ISRMInternational Congress to be held in South Africathis September.

News From The SecretariatNew ISRM Secretary GeneralDr. Luìs Lamas, LNEC’s research officer was appoint-ed as Secretary General of the Society due to Dr.José Delgado Rodrigues’ quittance of that charge.Dr. Lamas started his office in the beginning ofMay.

ISRM Council Meeting 2002The ISRM Council met in Madeira, Portugal onNovember 24. Twenty nine of the forty seven cur-rent ISRM National Groups were represented (twen-ty one in person and eight by proxy). Invitedobservers representing the ISRM Commissions andsister Societies also attended the Meeting. Besidesdiscussing other matters of relevant interest to theSociety, the Council took the following decisions:

Approvals Approved the Minutes of the ISRM Council Meeting2001, the Report of the ISRM Secretariat September2001–September 2002), the Report of the FinancialSituation of the Society (Running of 2001), and theBudget for 2003;

Muller AwardSelected Prof. Charles Fairhurst of USA as theRecipient for the 4th Muller Award;

2004 International SymposiumSelected the ISRM Symposium on Contribution ofRock Mechanics to the New Century, to be held inKyoto JAPAN in December 2004, as the ISRMInternational Symposium for that year;

2003 Board, Council & Commission MeetingsConfirmed the Sandton Convention Centre inSouth Africa as the venue for the 2003 Board;Council and Commission meetings to be held inconjunction with the 10th ISRM InternationalCongress in September.

ISRM Commission Meetings 2002The ISRM Commission on Information Technologyalso met in Madeira last November. The meetingwas chaired by the respective President, Prof. OveStephansson, and, at the Council meeting, thePresident of the Commission summarised the activ-ity since their last meeting. He presented a plan for achieving the proposedmain goals (stimulate interaction, attract members,offer additional benefits to members, make the pub-lication system cheaper, etc.) which would be per-formed through the ISRM Website under a newconcept of a communication platform to be devel-oped and implemented.

Farewell

It was a great privilege to have served as SecretaryGeneral of ISRM for about 13 years. During thistime, I could count with the collaboration of all

national groups and received the personal supportof many individual members. I had the utmost col-laboration of all the ISRM Boards and could countwith a permanent affability of the Council mem-bers.

It could be tempting to try to make a balance ofthis period but I will not do it. The achievementsbelong to the successive boards and councils andthese institutions are the ones that are in positionto make such a kind of long term balances. I triedto interpret correctly my role as Secretary General,and this short balance is what I would like to leaveas a farewell.

I would like to thank all the directorates ofnational groups for their kind acceptance of all oursmall or big daily life questions. I thank all theboards and commission members for their sympa-

thy and collaborative attitude. Thanks are also dueto Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil forallowing me to spend part of my time with ISRM.Maria de Lurdes was a dedicated and careful collab-orator and without her my work would have beenmuch harder.

New ISRM Secretary GeneralFollowing Dr. Delgado Rodrigues’s request to ceasefunctions, Dr. Luìs Lamas was appointed as the newSecretary General of the ISRM and started his officein May 2003.

Luìs Lamas wasborn in 1957, inLisbon, Portugal. Heobtained his BSc inCivil Engineering atthe University ofLisbon (1981), his MScin Engineering RockMechanics at theImperial College ofScience andTechnology, LondonUK (1986) and hisPh.D. at the Universityof London, UK (1993).

In 1981 he joinedthe Portuguese National Laboratory of CivilEngineering (LNEC), where he worked at theUnderground Construction Division. In 1994, whilekeeping his position of research officer of LNEC, hemoved to Macau to work at the Macau CivilEngineering Laboratory (LECM). From 1994 to 1997his work consisted of geotechnical consultancy forseveral large projects, such as the reclamation of theartificial island for the Macau International Airport.In 1997 he was appointed Chairman of the Boardof Directors of LECM and he kept this positionuntil February 2003. He then returned to LNECwhere he is currently a Senior Research Officer andthe Head of the Foundations and UndergroundWorks Division.

Dr. Lamas is a member of the ISRM since 1981and has had an active participation in many activi-ties of the Society, namely through the presentationof papers at ISRM sponsored symposia. He was amember of the Organising Committee of the 1993ISRM International Symposium, Eurock–93, held inLisbon, and of the Portuguese candidature to hostthe 2007 ISRM Congress.

Dr. Lamas is the author of a large number ofpublications dealing with rock engineering andother fields of civil engineering. His main researchinterests are in the hydromechanical behaviour ofrock masses, tunnelling in rock and dam founda-tions.

Israel

The Israel Rock Mechanics Association wasestablished in 2001 and the membership for2002 stands on 41 members from academia,

research institutions, and industry.The first professional meeting of IRMA took

place in April 23, 2002 in the Maagan resort on theshores of the Sea of Galilee. Two sessions were heldand 12 oral presentations were delivered by localexperts on various issues of rock mechanics androck engineering including: damage evolution inlaboratory tests, theoretical models for salt diapirand dike emplacements, numerical analysis and val-idation of existing numerical codes, rock slope sta-bility, and tunneling. The meeting took place dur-ing the annual meeting of Israel Geological Societyand was well attended by over 60 persons.

The big event for IRMA during 2002 was theorganization of ICADD-5, an ISRM RegionalConference, which was scheduled to take place atBen-Gurion University, Beer-Sheva in October. Dueto the sensitive situation in the region it was decid-ed to relocate the conference and to hold it inChina instead. The Yangtze River Scientific ResearchInstitute in Wuhan hosted the event which tookplace during 7-11 October, 2002 and was co-spon-sored by ARMA, IRMA and the Chinese Society forRock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) . Twodays of professional lectures in Wuhan were fol-lowed by a visit to the YRSRI, to the constructionsite of the Three Gorges Project, and to the com-pleted Gezhouba Dam.

Thirty three scientists and engineers attendedthe meeting, 17 of whom arrived from outsideChina. The proceedings, Stability of Rock Structures,(complete reference: Hatzor, Y. H. (Editor) 2002.Stability of Rock Structures. Proceedings of the 5thInternational Conference on Analysis ofDiscontinuous Deformation. Balkema Publishers ,Lisse, 239) were published by Balkema.

We thank our Chinese colleagues who respondedto the challenge and arranged an excellent meetingunder a very tight schedule. In particular ProfessorDehou Wang—President of YRSRI, ProfessorXuecheng Dong and Professor Wu Aiqing of theYRSRI are thanked for their kind hospitality andefficient organization. The Commission held the5th International Workshopon the Application of

Geophysics to Rock Engineeringon 7 July 2002 in Toronto,Canada, as part of NARMS-TAC2002. Ten excellent invitedpapers and also progress reportsof the two working groups werepresented and followed by excel-lent enthusiastic discussions. Thisworkshop was finished very suc-cessfully. The Commission published anissue of the ISRM News Journalwith articles on the application ofgeophysics in rock engineering,including the effort for gettingadvertisements from some com-panies. This issue was publishedas Vol. 7, No. 1 December 2001.

The Commission published aspecial issue on the application ofgeophysics to rock engineering inthe International Journal of RockMechanics and Mining Sciences.The special issue was published asVolume 38, Number 6, September2001. The contents of this specialissue are mainly based on thestudies presented at the 1st &2nd International Workshops onthe Application of Geophysics toRock Engineering. All papers havebeen significantly expanded tocontain much new material andfurther considerations followingthe workshops.

As reported at the CouncilMeeting in Beijing, two workinggroups have been formed in theCommission. The proposed taskof the first one is to make a sug-gested method for geophysicalsurvey in rock engineering. Thatof the second one is to make a

suggested method for in-situstress measurement from rockcore using the Acoustic Emissiontechnique. The second workinggroup has already completed thefirst draft, and circulated it twicein the working group membersfor revision. Isrm Commission onTesting MethodsReport on Activities fromCommission President Professor John A. HudsonThe main products of thisCommission are the SuggestedMethods (SM) documents whichthe ISRM generates in order toprovide guidance on the measure-ment of rock properties both inthe laboratory and on site. Thenew SMs are being produced viathe accelerated process which wasintroduced in 1998. In thismethod, the Draft SM is pro-duced quickly by the WorkingGroup Coordinators (one or twopeople as the authors of thedraft) and then published. Thisdraft SM is then available forcomment worldwide. It is my belief that Africa is not only emerging asa more prominent provider of minerals and met-als to the international community, but that

Africa has the potential to offer greater technicalexpertise to the interna-tional community infuture. This aspect hasbeen identified by moreof the African Leadersand hence the establish-ment of a body likeNEPAD, an African ini-tiative for the sustain-able development of theAfrican Continent.Mining will play a veryprominent role in thisinitiative, and this wasconfirmed during theIndaba 2003 Investmentin Africa Conference, an annual international eventheld in Cape Town earlier this year.

Rock Engineering and Seismology are insepara-ble in the creation of a safe and production friendlymining environment. With this in mind, the role ofthe Rock Engineering Practitioner will therefore beparamount to safeguard the future of the miningindustry. It is my objective to foster and create anenvironment where the technical expertise andambitions of members of the ISRM can be com-bined with the objectives of the Leaders of this veryprecious continent to ensure a sustainable future. Statement

Asia is a vast region with large population.Since the First Asian Rock MechanicsSymposium (1st ARMS) held in Seoul in

1997, Asian countries have been very active in thefield of rock mechanicsand rock engineering. In2001, China NG hostedthe 2nd Asian RockMechanics Symposium asISRM Annual Meeting;Japan NG hostedInternational Symposiumon Tunneling. In 2002,Korea hosted the ISRMRegional Symposiumóthe3rd Korea-Japan JointSymposium on RockMechanics. Moreover, China successfully organized

two international conferences in the same year: onewas the 2nd International Symposium on NewDevelopment in Rock Mechanics and RockEngineering, and the other was the 5thInternational Conference on DiscontinuousDeformation Analysis of Rock. We believe thesemeetings will greatly contribute to the sustainabledevelopment of all Asian countries.

China is the largest developing country in theworld with steady economic growth over recentyears. The infrastructure construction is in fullswing. The Three Gorges Project is a major interna-tional event, but there are also other important pro-jects, such as the Mega Hydro-Projects for transfer-ring water from southern to northern China and soon both underway and contemplated which under-line the enormous challenges and opportunities inrock mechanics and rock engineering.

The Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics andEngineering (CSRME, China NG ISRM) with a totalmembership of near 13,000 individuals is an activemember of ISRM. Looking forward to the future, weare willing to make greater contribution to ISRM.

If I am elected as the ISRM Vice President forAsia, I would like to concentrate my efforts on fol-lowing issues:

• To continue the organization of more ISRMsponsored symposia in Asia

• To promote and expand ISRM activities to vari-ous Asian countries, especially to those ofdeveloping countries

• To promote joint symposia or workshopsamong Asian countries and other countries inthe world

He is alsoengineering adviser of the Nuclear Industry andGeology Bureau (Jiangxi).

Prof. Angamuthu Varadarajan is a member of theISRM, through the Indian National Group of theISRM (the ISRM NG INDIA), and, currently, he isthe President of that Group. Statement

As an established international learned society,ISRM aims to increase the profile of rockmechanics in various engineering disciplines

as an active and relevant subject in civil, mining,petroleum andhydropower engineer-ing. ISRM thereforehas an important roleof promoting educa-tion, research andapplication of rockmechanics in variousengineering disci-plines. The social andeconomic develop-ment in Asia will leadto extensive develop-ment related to ener-gy and resources,infrastructure andconstruction, and much of such development arerelated to rock mechanics and rock engineering.This also provides ISRM the opportunity to extendits actives in Asia through concerted promotion andexchange programs.

As a Vice President for Asia, my goal would be:• To promote rock mechanics and ISRM activities

in Asia, and promote exchanges of rockmechanics research and rock engineering expe-riences between Asia and the World.

• To increase the profile of ISRM in Asia as anactive and relevant learned society and toimprove the involvement of rock mechanics incivil, mining, petroleum and hydropower engi-neering activities in Asia and internationally.

• To encourage countries and regions in Asia par-ticipating ISRM activities and to support ISRMNational Groups in Asia in organizing confer-ences, exchange programs and technical activi-ties.

• To cooperate close with ISRM sister organisa-tions, such as ISSMFE, IAEG and ITA, in Asiaand internationally.

In practical terms, during the term as VP Asia, Iwill visit all the ISRM member nations and nationswish to be ISRM members in Asia, to support thenational groups in organizing conferences andexchange activities, and to promote ISRM member-ship in Asian countries and regions.

ExperienceZhao Jian was born in 1960. He obtained his B.Sc.in Civil Engineering at the Univ. of Leeds, UK(1983), and his Ph.D. in Rock Mechanics at theImperial College, London UK (1987).

In 1990, he joined the Nanyang TechnologicalUniv. (NTU), SINGAPORE, as a faculty in the Schoolof Civil and Environmental Engineering, to initiaterock mechanics teaching and research. In 1995, heset up the rock mechanics and underground spaceresearch group, and, in 2001, he established theUnderground Technology and Rock Engineering(UTRE) Program in the NTU, as an integrated centrefor research and application of rock mechanics inthe underground space development. He has pio-neered the rock cavern development in SINGA-PORE, and has been a principal advisor toSingapore government agencies on undergroundspace developement. He has also been a consultantto local and international firms, on many rock tun-nelling and other rock engineering projects.Presently, he is Chair of the UTRE Program, and, inaddition, also a CKSP Distinguish Adjunct Prof. ofthe China Univ. of Mining and Technology, CHINA.

Prof. Zhao Jian is a member of the ISRM,through the ISRM Singapore National Group (theISRM NG SINGAPORE), having been its FoundingChairman. He has also been an Executive Councilmember of the ITA, the Founding HonorarySecretary of the Tunnelling and UndergroundConstruction Society (Singapore), and theChairman of the 30th World Tunnel Congress, andof the 4th Asian Rock Mechanics SymposiumAdvisory Committee. He is a Senior Editor of theTunnelling and Underground Space Technology interna-tional journal, and an Editorial Board member ofthe International Journal of Rock Mechanics andMining Sciences, the Chinese Journal of Rock Mechanicsand Engineering, the Chinese Journal of EngineeringGeology, and the SE Asia Geotechnical Society'sGeotechnical Engineering journal.

Prof. Zhao is the author or co-author of 1 book,3 monographs, and 180 papers (including morethan 60 papers in technical journals), and the edi-tor of 3 volumes. He received the Richard WoltersPrize of the IAEG (2000).

His recent research has been primarily in thefield of the stability and support of rock structuresunder dynamic loads, the behaviour of rock materi-al and rock masses under dynamic loading, rockdynamic testing methods, the effect of discontinu-ities on the shock wave propagation, discrete ele-ment modelling, the rock-TBM interaction in thetunnelling, and hydro-thermo-mechanical proper-ties of rock fractures.

John St George — NEW ZEALAND (nominated by the ISRM NG New ZEALAND)

Statement

The Australasian region of the ISRM has twovery active national groups, the AustralianGeomechanics Society and the New Zealand

Geotechnical Society, both of which also serve theISSMFE and IAEG. Thetwo groups worktogether closely andorganise a regional con-ference on geomechan-ics. The next ANZGeomechanicsConference is plannedfor Auckland, NewZealand in February2004. As VP for theregion, I will endeavourto promote the closeco-operation and involvement between the nationalgroups.

Within both groups there is a strong support forstudents and young professionals and I intend toencourage further support in this area.

Our region is dominated by the Australian mem-bership which has a strong affiliation with the min-ing industry. I believe coming from a mining back-ground will enable me to integrate with theAustralasian rock mechanics community andexpress their views to the Society. As an academic Ihave contacts in most of the major institutes in theregion concerned with rock mechanics. Thesewould be useful communication channels for dis-seminating.

Having receivedhis M.Sc. degree, he worked in consultancy, in theUK, and then took up an appointment at the Univ.of Otago, New ZEALAND, in the Dept of MineralTechnology. From there, he moved to the Univ. ofAuckland, currently being a Senior Lecturer in itsDept of Civil and Environmental Engineering,teaching courses in the geomechanics and environ-mental areas. He is also actively involved in con-sulting, on a wide range of projects.

Dr John St George is a member of the ISRM,through The N Zealand Geotechnical Society(NZGS) (the ISRM NG New ZEALAND).

Dr St George’s professional qualifications includeChartered Engineer, member of the IMMM, Fellow

As President of the American Rock MechanicsAssociation (ARMA) and ISRM Vice Presidentfor North America, I will promote continued

co-operation between Canada, Mexico, and theUnited States. ARMAhas already assumedthe task of organisingthe 2004 NorthAmerican RockMechanics Symposium(NARMS) after ourMexican Colleagueswere not able to per-form that duty. On theBoard of ISRM I willcontribute as much as Ican to the progress ofinformatic exchangeamong the memberscountries with empha-sis on electronic com-munications.

ExperienceFrançois E. Heuzé graduated in Mining Engineeringat the National School of Mines, FRANCE (1964),his M.Sc. in Civil Engineering at the Univ. ofCalifornia, Berkeley USA (1967), and his Ph.D. inCivil Engineering at the University of California,Berkeley (1970).

Eda Freitas de Quadros — BRAZIL (nominated by the ISRM NG BRAZIL)

Statement

One cannot discuss the main goals for theVice-President of South American in theISRM Board, without having

in mind the political and economi-cal situation of the region. In theselast 10 years, strong political andeconomical changes have occurredas a whole in the South Americancontinent, which affected almost allthe branches of professional activi-ties including those engineers work-ing in the field of rock mechanics.

This situation has had a stronginfluence on the development ofthe South American Groups ofISRM (ISRM-NGs). In the beginningof the nineties, some of the eightSouth American countries associat-ed to ISRM were very active pro-moting events like Regional or localSymposia, Congresses, Seminars,and so on. Following the proposalfrom Prof. Orestes Moretto and other prominentrock mechanics professionals at that time, the FirstSouth American Symposium was held on Colombiain the beginning of the eighties, followed by theIInd South American Symposium realized in Brazilin 1986. Venezuela held the IIIrd South AmericanSymposium of Rock Mechanics in 1991, in the pres-ence of Prof. John Franklin at that time President ofISRM, Prof. Dinis da Gama the Vice-President elect-

ed for South America and Prof. Tarcisio Celestino,Vice-President at Large.

Chile organized the IVth South AmericanSymposium with the participation of prominentprofessionals invited from all over the world in themeeting organized by Prof. Van Sint Jan in the pres-ence of the Vice-President for South America, OscarVardé—from Argentina. This was also a memorableevent for the rock mechanics development in thecontinent.

After the IVth Symposium in Chile, Peru shouldhave been the next host for the Vth SouthAmerican Symposium, but in the end it was Brazil,due to the political and economical situation inPeru and consequent decrease in rock mechanicsactivities. As there were also the difficulties inherentin organizing such a big event, Peru’s NG thereforepassed their rights to Brasil. Subsequently,Argentina was also experiencing a problematic timein their country. So the Vth South AmericanSymposium of Rock Mechanics — SAROCKS-98—chaired by Prof. Lineu A. Ayres da Silva from thePolytecnical School of São Paulo University, washeld in conjunction with the 2nd BrazilianSymposium of Rock Mechanics, in the presence ofProf. Van Sint Jan, Vice-President for South Americaat that time, and with a number of prominent lec-turers from overseas.

After all this history, one could really ask: shouldthe last South American Symposium be SAROCKS-98? The answer of course is certainly not!

So as a candidate for the South American Vice-President to the Board of ISRM in the next fouryears, I would strongly propose to our National

Groups that the main priority taskfor South America will be to restorethe activities of our NGs and toresume our country-to-country cir-culation of South AmericanSymposia. The regional Vice-President’s main role should be thecoordination of the proposed activ-ities by the NG’s, and the inter-change of information and ideaswith the Groups.

As a member of the ISRM Board,one of my roles with ISRM col-leagues can be helping the ISRMPresident to take decisions forincreasing and modernizing ourSociety. There will be other taskstoo, like encouraging the commu-nity to participate in the ISRMCommissions, to bring new mem-

bers to ISRM, increase publications, and so manyother things to try for the Society as a whole.

Dr Eda de Quadros is a member of the ISRM,through the Comité Brasileiro de Mecanica dasRochas of the Associão Brasileira de Mecanica dosSolos (CBMR-ABMS) (the ISRM NG BRAZIL), and,since 1984, she has been successively elected asCounsellor on the Board of the CBMR. She is also amember of the IAEG, the ISSMGE, the ITA, and therespective Brazilian geotechnical societies (ABGE,ABMS, and CBT).

Dr Quadros is the author of 52 papers in interna-tional journals, symposia, and congresses.

Her professional experience involves theoretical,field, and lab. work to determine the rock mass per-meability related to engineering works; hydrauliccharacterization of fractured rock masses, in con-nection to the foundation and abutments of dams,tunnels, and mining works; analysis of flow prob-lems in fractured rock masses, based on a continu-ous and discontinuous approach, taking into con-sideration the geometrical characterization of thejoint sets, and the complexity of the joint network,related to the rock mass volume concerned in thespecific engineering work.

July 2003The reason for having a science like rock mechanics and its application, rock engineering, is mainlyprofit oriented, turning knowledge of rocks and steel to good use. The reason for having a societylike the ISRM, and the key to the successful application of rock mechanics, however, is people.

As scientists and engineers, we all rely on studying papers and books to obtain knowledge andinformation. We study the data and try to follow the mathematics. We argue, using cold logic tomake a point, to advance the science. The names of the authors become known to us — Barla,Fairhurst, Wittke, Sakurai, Salamon, so many more excellent ones, giants, all of them.

But behind each name is a person of flesh and blood, with hobbies, weaknesses, desires, and justordinary habits. Each one is just a neighbour to someone else in a city or town somewhere, someonewho also has to wash the car and mow the lawn, take out the garbage…

What do these people look like? What do they do when they have the time to do what they liketo do? This issue is devoted to some of the people of the ISRM. Most are famous in our circles. We have allstudied their work. In this issue, we present the person behind the maths, the guy who hangs pic-tures on the wall, who gets summoned to dinner when he is on the point of a breakthrough that willchange the world.

In future, we hope to bring a personality to each issue of the News Journal. As an introduction,the bulk of this volume is devoted to the people. We hope that you will get something out of it,something more than rock or moduli…

I don’tthink my life has had any defin-ing moments, except perhaps mydiscovery of an exciting musiccalled jazz when I was a 15 yearold schoolboy. The career defin-ing moment for me, if there issuch a thing, came in December1974 when I was appointed tosucceed Evert Hoek as leader ofthe Imperial College RockMechanics group that he hadestablished so brilliantly. Movingto London in July 1975, gave meall sorts of opportunities that Iwouldn’t have had otherwise.

Perhaps a significant differ-ence between me and most otherISRM members who have hadacademic careers, is that foralmost 20 years at ImperialCollege and the University ofQueensland, I had Departmental,Faculty and then seniorUniversity management positionsand did my rock mechanics work“on the side”. No doubt manywill say that it showed! At theend of 2000, I retired from myposition as Senior Deputy Vice-

Chancellor of the University ofQueensland (a position like thatof the Vice-Rector of a Europeanuniversity or the Vice-Presidentfor Academic Affairs or Provost ofan American university). I nowwork part-time as a consultingengineer with Golder Associates,am involved with researchthrough the University ofQueensland’s Julius KruttschnittMineral Research Centre, and ama member of several Boards. I’m aDirector of the State owned rail-way company, Queensland Rail,and the Chairman of a rail freightcompany which is one of its sub-sidiaries. What other ISRM mem-ber has his own full-scale trainset?

I have two “distinctions” relat-ed to the ISRM of which I’m par-ticularly proud. Upper Silesiastretches over a huge coal deposit,the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Forcenturies, mining in Upper Silesiawas not only a profession but alsoa tradition and a style of life.Miners in Upper Silesia werealways regarded as the noblest ofthe nobles and no professioncould match theirs. Innumerablefamilies in big cities, small townsand villages lived from miningand for mining. This included myfather, a surgeon, who for decadesused to go every afternoon fromhis hospital to a nearby collierywhere he worked as the mine’smedical doctor. The region’s spe-cial atmosphere and admirationfor people struggling heroicallyagainst underground hazardsinspired me to stay in UpperSilesia forever. That is how Ibecame an adept of the miningprofession at the AndaluzjaColliery in 1964, immediatelyafter graduation from secondaryschool and, then, began my uni-versity studies in the field ofmining engineering.

• 1950 — I took the decisionto become civil engineer (noprecedents in my family)

• 1975 — I took the decisionto enter an academic carreer.After working more than 15years in the constructionindustry (first construction,after, design)

• 1986 — in one day I had tofinish a report for the sup-port of a slope below a veryold castle (Denia, Spain). Igot depressed after hearingabout the death in a planecrash of one of my bestfriends. When working in avery depressed mood, I gotthe spark idea for the geome-chanical classification.

Dick Bieniawski was my bossfor 6 years, and a very good one.He was a very good motivatorand gave me a push to do a doc-torate. John Knill gave me thehonour of being an AcademicVisitor for a very memorable yearat Imperial College. I was veryfortunate to be able to work withmany superb colleagues atSteffen, Robertson and Kirsten(SRK) for 25 stimulating years.
