BORDEAUXRED WINE

CHÂTEAU HAUT-SEGOTTES 2015AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: An attractive smooth and supple wine that has a wealth of sweet-smelling and spicy earth and undergrowth-like aromas. Hints of violets, too. The palate has a very succulent, fluid and rich presence with ample ripe dark-plum and blueberry flavors. Finishes fresh and long. Try from 2022. Score: 94 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

19001 (XD) 750 mL $51.00

CHÂTEAU LA CABANNE 2015AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: A dense and rich red with ripe fruit and plenty of muscles. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Enjoy the berry, orange peel and cedar undertones in the wine. Best ever? Needs at least four or five years to come together. Score: 95 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

578732 (XD) 750 mL $80.00

CHÂTEAU PHÉLAN SÉGUR 2015AC Saint-Estèphe

TASTING NOTE: A beautifully perfumed young red with blackcurrants, blackberries and dark chocolate. Some sweet tobacco. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a very balanced and refined palate, showing focus and tightness. This needs time to open. Try after 2023. Score: 94 (jamessuckling.com, July 7, 2020)

18848 (XD) 750 mL $113.00

CHÂTEAU PIPEAU 2016AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: The dark-berry and graphite aromas jump out of the glass, together with a salty undertone. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a juicy finish. Shows decadence and richness at the end. Always excellent quality for the money. Try from 2022. Score: 93 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 3, 2019)

258558 (XD) 1500 mL $132.00

CHÂTEAU PRIEURÉ-LICHINE 20104e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: Black truffle and dark berries. Full body, round and fresh tannins and fresh acidity give this lift and intensity. Drink or hold. Score: 94 (jamessuckling.com, Jan. 7, 2019)

300103 (XD) 750 mL $154.00

CONFIDENCES DE PRIEURÉ-LICHINE 2015Second wine of Prieuré-Lichine, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine is a very pretty second wine. Pliant, supple and inviting, the Confidences is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. All of the signatures of the Grand Vin come through nicely, but, of course, in miniature. This is a strong showing. Drinking window: 2018-2027. Score: 91 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Feb. 2018)

20168 (XD) 750 mL $54.00

LE MARGAUX DU CHÂTEAU DE MALLERET 2015Second wine of Château de Malleret, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: This has impressive fleshy depth and is really plush and attractive with aromas and flavors of blueberries, cassis, dark cherries, savory and nutty elements and a smoothly rendered, fine finish. Terrific depth here. Try from 2021. Score: 94 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

20165 (XD) 750 mL $69.00

LES FORTS DE LATOUR 2014Second wine of Château Latour, AC Pauillac

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Les Forts de Latour is a blend of 71.4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28.6% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal expanding scents of blackcurrant pastilles, baked plums and boysenberries with suggestions of wood smoke, fragrant earth, cast-iron pan and charcuterie plus a faint waft of black truffles. Medium-bodied, the earthy/savory palate has loads of lively black fruit with a refreshing line and firm, grainy tannins, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. Drink date: 2022-2044. Score: 93 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, March 5, 2020)

20389 (XD) 750 mL $435.00

WHITE WINE

LA CHAPELLE DE LAFAURIE-PEYRAGUEY 2015Second wine of Château Lafaurie- Peyraguey, AC Sauternes

TASTING NOTE: Brimming with peaches, mangoes and papaya on the nose, this is so bright and enticing. Then you take a sip and you have the classic richness and creaminess of Sauternes married to an uplifting freshness. The finish is long and elegant. Score: 93 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 5, 2018)

477588 (S) 375 mL $32.00

BURGUNDYCÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE

DOMAINE JESSIAUME LES BROUILLARDS VOLNAY 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Poised between ripe black-cherry flavors and a core of tannins, this young, structured wine has great potential. Plenty of acidity and juicy fruits give the wine a fresher side and the dry core will allow it to age. Drink this wine from 2022.

WHITE WINE

BACHELET-RAMONET CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2018AC

The Chardonnay wines produced in the Chassagne-Montrachet region are consistently among the finest and most complex dry white wines in the world. This one comes from the remarkable 2018 vintage and carries the region’s benchmark balance, elegance, minerality and toasty notes. Pair it with lobster or crab.

19705 (XD) 750 mL $88.00

DOMAINE BACHELET-MONNOT CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: A ripe if restrained nose shyly reflects notes of resin, pear, apple and an admirably discreet dollop of wood. There is fine volume and surprisingly good power to the vibrant and mouth coating medium-bodied flavors that possess fine depth and persistence. This is an excellent Chassagne villages and worth considering. Drink: 2025+. Outstanding. Top value. Score: 89-92 (Allen Meadows, burghound.com, June 10, 2020)

435677 (XD) 750 mL $103.00

DOMAINE BERTHELEMOT ABBAYE DE MORGEOT CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2018AC

Roger Voss of Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2017 vintage of this wine a rating of 94 points on October 1, 2019, stating that it showed “... structure and a zesty, mineral texture ... as well as wonderful fruitiness ...” The 2018 version will reflect similar quality, as well as revealing the great tension and freshness that is a defining characteristic of Burgundy’s 2018 Chardonnays.

19665 (XD) 750 mL $105.00

DOMAINE GERMAIN MONTHÉLIE BLANC 2019AC

This wine is sourced from vines planted in 1990 and 2000 in clay and limestone soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is aged for up to 10 months in oak before bottling. Monthélie Chardonnay is similar in style to Meursault and offers apple, lemon and nut tones, with a zesty acidity and gorgeous texture.

18775 (XD) 750 mL $53.00

JEAN-CLAUDE BOISSET LE LIMOZIN MEURSAULT 2018AC

Le Limozin is named for a stream that once flowed past the vineyard. The site has earned a respectable reputation, which isn’t surprising, as Le Limozin is nestled between the premier-cru vineyards Les Genevrières and Les Charmes. The vines of Le Limozin are over 45 years of age, and the wines produced here reflect much of the balance, richness, depth and complexity of its famous neighbours.

77289 (XD) 750 mL $87.00

LOUIS JADOT MORGEOT CLOS DE LA CHAPELLE CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: A candidate for extended cellaring in Jadot’s range this year is the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle (Domaine du Duc de Magenta), a beautifully incisive wine that meets the high expectations I formed when I tasted it from barrel a year ago. Opening in the glass with aromas of crisp Anjou pear, peach, fresh pastry and honeycomb, it’s medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and youthfully tight-knit, with fabulous structural tension and a racy spine of acidity. Bottled under Diam 30, this tensile but concentrated Morgeot will really begin to sing in six or seven years. Drink date: 2025-2045. Score: 93+ (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Feb. 13, 2020)

635011 (XD) 750 mL $132.00

PATRICK JAVILLIER LES TILLETS MEURSAULT 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Meursault Les Tillets has a clean, well-defined bouquet with yellow plum, hazelnut and light waxy aromas developing in the glass. The palate is well balanced with orange rind and lemon zest on the entry. This is quite a phenolic Meursault, one that is well balanced with a complex finish befitting a vineyard like Les Tillets. Recommended. Drinking window: 2022-2030. Score: 91 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2020)

714899 (XD) 750 mL $105.00

CHABLISWHITE WINE

ALBERT BICHOT DOMAINE LONG-DEPAQUIT LES CLOS CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: Beautiful subtlety on this wine’s nose recalls smoky lemon, citrus pith and molten candlewax. The palate also holds these notions, bolstering that lemony waxiness with thick, layered chalkiness and pithy, mouthwatering freshness. This is concentated and bold, offering energy and drive, with a contradictory heat emanating from a cool core. A compelling wine, it needs to calm down a little. Drink date: 2025-2040. Score: 97 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2020)

10184 (XD) 750 mL $110.00

ALBERT BICHOT DOMAINE LONG-DEPAQUIT LES VAUCOPINS CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Quite a generous style of Chablis with ripe-pear character. But, with some time and air, this also reveals some earthy depths and the long, mineral finish shows great promise for the future. Better from 2020. Score: 93 (jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)

WHITE WINE

ALBERT SOUNIT LES COÈRES MONTAGNY 1ER CRU 2017AC(Domaine Bernollin)

Montagny produces only Chardonnays, which are notably aromatic and offer a range of floral tones. The wines can suggest notes of mayflower, honeysuckle, acacia, bramble flowers and even bracken alongside ripe pear and peach. Some wines also reflect a hint of flinty minerality, but all Montagny’s wines are fresh, structured and refined. This one comes from a producer founded in 1850.

19704 (XD) 750 mL $49.00

MÂCONNAISWHITE WINE

DOMAINE DU ROC DES BOUTIRES EN BERTILIONNE POUILLY-FUISSÉ 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé En Bertilionne mingles notes of orange oil and yellow apple with hints of beeswax and fresh pastry. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it’s a textural, elegantly muscular wine girdled by bright acids, concluding with a penetrating finish. Drink date: 2020-2030. Score: 92 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, April 30, 2020)

18855 (XD) 750 mL $56.00

PASCAL BOUCHARD LES VIEILLES VIGNES MONTMAINS CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: This vineyard on the left, cooler bank of the River Serein brings out great minerality in its wines even in warm vintages such as this. Full of ripe yellow fruits, textured and still young, the wine has a toasty character from wood aging. Drink this rich wine from 2021. Editors’ Choice. Score: 92 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 1, 2018)

CÔTE CHALONNAISERED WINE

DOMAINE ADÉLIE EN PIERRE MILLEY MERCUREY 2018AC(Albert Bichot)

This is the first of Albert Bichot’s wines to be released as organic. It’s literally the fruit of 20 years of labour to convert the vineyard. The fruit from Burgundy’s 2018 was of such quality that the rich, expressive wines it has produced have garnered comparisons to the legendary 1947 vintage. Currently, 2018 is poised to be counted among the greatest vintages of all time.

18400 (XD) 750 mL $43.00

DOMAINE DE SUREMAIN EN SAZENAY MERCUREY 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: On the eastern side of Mercurey, this vineyard is one of the leading premier crus. This wine with its structure and generous fruits is densely textured and still young. Powerful black fruits are fresh, juicy and developing. Drink this wine from 2023. Cellar Selection. Score: 93 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2019)

227116 (XD) 750 mL $59.00

THIBERT PÈRE & FILS LES CRAS POUILLY-FUISSÉ 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: (a blend of three small vineyards; bottled in June): Pale yellow. Inviting, higher-pitched aromas of soft citrus fruits, crushed rock and spices. Broad and rich but vibrant too, conveying terrific energy and smoky, spicy, savory intensity to its flavors of menthol and crushed stone. Wonderfully fine-grained Pouilly-Fuissé with sneaky length – and a lemony elegance and grip that are atypical for this vintage. Time in the cellar should bring greater richness without any loss of spine. Drinking window: 2019-2025. Score: 92 (Stephen Tanzer, vinous.com, Nov. 2017)

RHÔNENORTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

E. GUIGAL LA LANDONNE CÔTE-RÔTIE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Bright purple. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, incense and potpourri, while olive and exotic spice nuances build in the glass. Intense, alluringly sweet black/blue fruit, spicecake and violet pastille flavors show sharp delineation and a spine of juicy acidity. Closes extremely long and precise, displaying a smoky, intensifying mineral quality and youthfully gripping tannins that build steadily. Drinking window: 2027-2040. J. DENUZIÈRE CORNAS 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Lavish and full bodied, this intensely ripe but structured Syrah offers dense, concentrated flavors of plum compote and mulberry muted by complexities of earth, iron and ore. A powerful wine framed by ripe, penetrating tannins, it’s a robust accompaniment now to heartier meals but should meld and gain finesse well through 2037. Score: 94 (Anna Lee C. Iijima, Wine Enthusiast, July 1, 2020)

666834 (XD) 750 mL $59.00

YVES CUILLERON CAVANOS SAINT-JOSEPH 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: Dark magenta. Highly perfumed red and blue fruit, potpourri and incense aromas are sharpened by a peppery nuance. Sappy, sweet and lively on the palate, offering energetic, mineral-driven blackberry and black currant flavors that show impressive depth and building spiciness. Finishes smoky, sweet and very long, with lingering florality and gentle, well-judged tannins that add subtle grip. There’s a level of finesse here that reminds me more than a little of Côte-Rôtie. Drinking window: 2023-2031. Score: 93 (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, April 2020)

SOUTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

CHÂTEAU MONT-REDON LE PLATEAU CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Densely packed, with the ripe, vivid dark fruit that is the hallmark of the vintage, as plum, blackberry, black currant and fig notes course through, carried by a deeply embedded graphite spine. Warm ganache, singed tobacco, Turkish coffee and roasted alder

by a smoky mineral nuance. Juicy and expansive in the mouth, displaying alluringly sweet, mineral-tinged blueberry, cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors along with hints of licorice and cola. The floral and spice notes repeat emphati- cally on an extremely long, penetrating finish that features mounting tannins and a resonating mineral flourish. Drinking window: 2026-2038. Score: 98 (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, April 2020)

E. GUIGAL LA TURQUE CÔTE-RÔTIE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Inky magenta. Candied cherry, blackcurrant, exotic spices, violet oil and a hint of olive on the powerfully scented nose. Velvety, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining, mineral-laced black/blue fruit preserve, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors that open up steadily on the back half. Displays sharp delineation and a resonating floral note on a strikingly long finish that’s framed by plush, rounded tannins. Drinking window: 2026-2039. Score: 97 (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, April 2020)

GUY FARGE PASSION DE TERRASSES SAINT-JOSEPH 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: Out of new barrels, the 2018 Saint Joseph Passion de Terrasses shows plenty of mocha aromatics but also plenty of richness, ripe tannins and plenty of length. From a 2016 barrel, it’s lovely stuff, with ample nuance to its notes of violets and spice, plus layers of black olives and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, supple and long on the finish. Drink date: 2020-2030. Score: 93-95 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2020)

DOMAINE RAYMOND USSEGLIO LA PART DES ANGES CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2018AC

TASTING NOTE: In contrast to the tank-aged, Grenache-based Cuvée Imperiale, Usseglio’s 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape la Part des Anges is 70% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache and 10% Syrah, all aged in oak. Dark and potent, it marries deep, dark fruit aromas with scents of vanilla and cedar on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is seamlessly smooth and focused, coming to a lingering, precise finish. Given the varietal makeup and elevage, I’d expect this wine to evolve positively for up to two decades. Drink date: 2021-2040. Score: 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Sept. 24, 2020)

18990 (XD) 750 mL $106.00

FAMILLE PERRIN LES HAUTS DE JULIEN VIEILLES VIGNES VINSOBRES 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Like the les Cornuds bottling, the 2017 Vinsobres Les Hauts de Julien is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah. It’s co-fermented, then divided into foudre and barrels for aging (half in each). With its toasted coconut and cocoa aromas, it comes across as a bit exotic, but it adds plenty of mixed berry fruit and hints of dried spices. There are only 5,000 bottles of this full-bodied, richly textured wine for the world, so fans will have to move fast to secure some once it’s released. Drink date: 2020-2030. Score: 94-96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2018)

WHITE WINE

CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC 2019AC

TASTING NOTE: While the old-vine Roussanne cuvée from this estate gets all the attention from collectors, don’t make the mistake of discounting their classic Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. The 2019 reveals a lighter gold hue as well as a beautiful and classic bouquet of honeyed citrus, quince, white flowers, bee’s wax, and a touch of flinty minerality. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it has flawless balance, nicely integrated acidity, and a great, minerally finish. You can enjoy bottles today with a decant or cellar for two to three decades, if you’re so inclined. Maturity: 2020-2027. Score: 95 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Oct. 6, 2020)

CAVE DE TURCKHEIM BRAND RIESLING 2017AC Alsace Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: Earth and dried lime-peel notes cling to lemon aromas on the nose of this wine. The palate adds stony depth and hints of passion fruit to the concentrated, vivid body. It finishes dry and long, with bright citrus, ripe pineapple and stony depth. Score: 94 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: While still young, this Champagne has all the makings of greatness. Produced from grand cru vineyards, it already balances ripe white fruits with a firm structure that will age well. It’s relatively dry and has plenty of acidity, which will also aid in the longevity. Drink from 2022. Ranked #33 in the 2019 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selections. GÉRARD BERTRAND L’HOSPITALITAS LA CLAPE 2018AP

TASTING NOTE: From a three-hectare parcel of Bertrand’s La Clape estate, the 2018 La Clape L’Hospitalitas is a blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged a year in new French oak. Basically, it ratchets up the intensity from the Château l’Hospitalet bottling while playing on the pitch: garrigue, blackberries, black olives and salted licorice on the nose, a full-bodied palate supported by ripe tannins and plenty of length and intensity on the finish. It’s a big, beautiful beast capable of drinking well for a decade or more. Drink date: 2020-2030. Score: 95 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, June 30, 2020)

LEITZ RÜDESHEIMER DRACHENSTEIN ERSTE LAGE RIESLING TROCKEN 2018Prädikatswein

TASTING NOTE: This Erste-Lage (‘premier cru’) site on loess clay containing sandstone and quartzite is located at the top of the Rüdesheim, adjacent to a forest which encourages large diurnal temperature swings. Consequently, even during a long, hot summer such as 2018, this wine retains a glacial freshness and amazing balance. It has a lovely texture and good depth of flavour, with notes of apple, lime and even some apple skin. Creamy, woody hints fill out the wine on the mid-palate. This should be even more delicious in a few years. Tank sample. Drinking window: 2020-2033. Score: 93 (James Button, decanter.com, May 6, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: Manzone’s 2015 Barolo Castelletto is truly impressive. Bold, rich and pulsing with energy, the 2015 captures all the vibrancy that makes Barolos from Castelletto so distinctive, with an extra touch of mid-palate sweetness. If that sounds appealing, well, it is. Rose petal, bright red berry fruit, mint, chalk and wild flowers all run through this wonderfully nuanced, translucent Barolo. There is so much to like here. TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Pian del Ciampolo is a glorious wine. The purest essence of Radda emerges in a wine with striking translucence and captivating balance. The 2018 offers notable depth with less opulence and more freshness than the 2017. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint and spice are all finely knit in a wine of extraordinary beauty. PALAZZO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino from Palazzo opens up with a bouquet that is firmly rooted in the earth, showing hints of animal musk, dark soil and hints of sage, giving way to smoky minerals, cedar and notes of black cherry. On the palate, soft, enveloping textures, are contrasted by a sweet and sour expression of red fruits with a spiced-citrus twang, as zesty acids make the mouth water, while a mix of minerals and grippy tannin slowly mount. The finish is long, with a tannic tug offset by citrus-kissed acidity, along with lingering red berry fruit and spice. It’s hard not to like this vintage of Palazzo, with its near-term appeal, tactile tannic heft, and edge of rusticity, which blends the best of both vivid fruit and earth. It should excel in the cellar over the coming decade, as a bottle left open over the course of two

TASTING NOTE: The Loacker Schwarhof 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Corte Pavone Fiore del Vento shows an inky dark appearance with dense fruit aromas that are lavished thickly over the bouquet. Straight from the bottle, this wine is very open and accessible. Those fruit elements are generous and immediate, implying that the wine has

been amply fleshed out with oxygen and barrel aging. Blackberry and dark cherry aromas rush forth with a blast of intensity. This wine is not shy in the mouth either. It is well structured and firm, with pretty detailing of freshness and acidity at the back. The palate suggests that this wine can age longer, however the bouquet is ready now. Drink date: 2021-2035. MONTEVERTINE 2017IGT Toscana

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Montevertine is rich, creamy and beautifully resonant on the palate. Over the last year it seems to have gained an extra bit of freshness, which is of course such a plus in this very hot, dry vintage. Montevertine is often austere, but the 2017 is unusually open today, not to mention incredibly delicious. There is plenty of tannin beneath all of that vintage 2017 fruit. Even so, opening a bottle young is not a crime by any stretch of the imagination. Black cherry, leather, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice and earthy notes develop with aeration, showing just a glimpse of what is in store for those who can wait. The 2017 is a striking wine in every sense. Floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further dimensions that will continue to unfold over the coming years. Drinking window: 2022-2042. Pliant and inviting, with soft, voluptuous curves, the 2017 is off the charts gorgeous. Layers of deep Sangiovese fruit gradually reveal themselves with air. TASTING NOTE: Fresh, pungent, purple blackberry fruit dominates the nose, then deeper tar, liquorice, cassis and molasses sweetness before the Eden Valley Shiraz signatures of sage and bay leaf add verve. Very complex. The palate dries to a bony savouriness – a nod to the strength and muscle of Keyneton Shiraz, putting added steel into the structure of this wine. A taut acid line and sturdy yet understated tannins keep the flavours bright and long, through to a soft finish.

ZUCCARDI FINCA PIEDRA INFINITA PARAJE ALTAMIRA MALBEC 2016Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: I was blown away by the 2016 Finca Piedra Infinita, a wine I have been anticipating because I’ve seen the progression of the wine over the last few years. They use almost 40 different components to make this wine from small plots within the vineyard, especially the soils they call “supercalcáreo” (super limestone). The other type of soil they use is what they call “gravas calcáreas” (limestone gravels), and they don’t use any of the grapes from the deeper soils that go into the Q range. The wine has reached a stratospheric level of precision, symmetry and elegance in 2016 that is really captivating. Everything seems to be in its place; there is great harmony, the aromatics are clean and pure and the texture is like liquid

chalk. There is power and elegance, energy and finesse. This is a really outstanding wine that summarizes the hard work at Zuccardi in the last few years. Bravo! Drink date: 2019-2036. Score: 100 (Luis Gutiérrez, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: This estate-grown blend combines 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, allowing the main variety to speak loudest. Gorgeously perfumed, it unfurls wave after wave of cassis, dusty rock and cocoa powder – seasonings that boost secondary characteristics of black and red currant and cherry. With structure and complexity to spare, it should do well over time; enjoy best from 2027-2032. Cellar Selection. Score: 97 (Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2020)

OVID HEXAMETER 2017Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Hexameter, Ovid’s Cabernet Franc-based blend, is bright and focused, with tons of Franc character in its aromatic and flavor profiles and weight. Sweet red cherry, mint, white pepper, blood orange and flowers give the 2017 striking top notes and energy. Medium in body and finely cut, the Hexameter speaks with a very distinctive voice. The 2017 is super-precise, but it is also a touch light. It will be interesting to see if it fleshes out a bit more with aging. The 2017 is a wine of extreme and total finesse. Black cherry, blueberry, lavender, mint, espresso and sweet spice build as this racy, sumptuous wine gains volume with air. Twomey hand-sort their grapes, employ indigenous yeasts and move their wines through the winery with gravity rather than pumps. They ferment each lot separately before blending and careful ageing in French oak. Balanced, ripe and intense, this is a wine that will evolve for up to 10 years from harvest and will be immediately enjoyable when served with duck or salmon.

Twomey sources the grapes for their Merlot from the volcanic soils of their Soda Canyon Ranch. During the ageing process, the wine is racked from barrel to barrel in the classic Bordeaux technique known as soutirage traditionnel. This process helps round out the tannins in the wine, producing this Merlot’s characteristic softness and richness while allowing the intense ripe fruit character to shine.

Layered with plum, brambly berry and streaks of wood and herb, it’s a seamless and beautifully balanced wine. an ancient Samurai sword through the viscous fruit whose purity is off the charts. This electrifying Olerasay does not mess about – it immediately thrills the senses with its mélange of blood orange, apricot, crushed minerals and passion fruit. There is so much energy in this wine. The finish has a weightless quality that means, despite its high residual sugar level, the wine is actually easy to drink and is not weighed down by its own unctuousness. The killer aspect of this is the soupçon of bitter orange that hits the back of the throat. I suspected that a perfect Olerasay was possible after the first iteration. This is it. TASTING NOTE: The Olerasay 2° is 100% Chenin Blanc with 8.5% alcohol and 331g/l of residual sugar, not that you notice those figures. It was bottled on 17 January 2020. It is an ethereal wine that gives me no choice but to use a simple word loaded with meaning and one I rarely use with respect to wine...perfection. The 375 mL bottle was examined over the course of two weeks during which time it barely changed. Each time I put it under a microscope looking for a fault. I never found one. Golden in colour, it has an intoxicating bouquet with orange sorbet, quince, lemon verbena and a very slight Aszú-like note that hovers in the background. Having recently tasted plenty of Sauternes, I can’t help noticing how the aromatics are unencumbered by a thick cloak of oak, thereby lending the bouquet brightness and vividness that is totally enthralling. This all translates across to the crystalline palate. The perfect seam of acidity cuts like

intensity, a refined purity and a luxuriously framed texture. This mature wine is nearing its denouement, so enjoy it tonight with mixed dried fruit or dark chocolate.

VALLADO VINTAGE PORT 2017DOP, Portugal

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Vintage Port (formerly called Adelaide) was bottled a few weeks before this tasting. It is a field blend from old vines aged only in stainless steel. Very dry, it comes in with 83 grams of residual sugar. There’s a big hit of fruit up front, but then it shows off unusual power for Vallado Port – this might be the most tannic that I’ve seen from Vallado. Dense and concentrated, it doesn’t seem at all like an unoaked Port this year. The big, tight and gripping finish suggests that this muscular Port can age for decades. This year, if this is not as expressive and as approachable young as it typically is, it is a step up in other ways. It is going to need time, though. Drink date: 2028-2067. BOLLINGER LA GRANDE ANNÉE BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE 2012AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2012 La Grande Année Rosé is airy, gracious and so wonderfully inviting. Crushed flowers, mint, white pepper and red berry fruit are all gracefully woven together. Today, the 2012 is naturally quite young and still shows the tension of a Champagne that was disgorged just a few months ago. Readers who prefer Champagnes with softer edges and a bit more flavor complexity will want to cellar the 2012. I have to admit, I very much like the wine today, in its youthful state, where its energy and focus are front and center. The 2012 is a blend of 67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay taken from 21 villages built around a core of Aÿ and Verzenay Pinot Noir and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry Chardonnay, crus that are quite complementary. In 1963, Madame Bollinger selected the first bottles of what was to become the legendary Bollinger R.D. (“Recently Disgorged”), then known as Réserve 1947. Her idea was to choose an older vintage that was disgorged late; a daring move at a time when aged Champagnes were not yet as fashionable as they’ve since become. This brand new release of the 2007 hasn’t yet been reviewed, but given the 2004 vintage (disgorged in 2017) received 96 points from Wine Spectator, expect to be impressed.

TASTING NOTE: The ‘Assemblage’ – a preciser word than blend to describe its intricacy – is drawn from the house’s famous collection of reserve wines, in particular the 1988, 1996, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 vintages. The grape varieties are very close to the classic choices that Veuve Clicquot herself preferred as she built her brand post 1815: today, 47% Pinot Noir, 27% Chardonnay and 26% Pinot Meunier – the quintessence of the house’s heritage & core values. More innovatively, and perhaps uniquely among the big houses, Veuve Clicquot Extra Brut, Extra Old is double aged – three years on lees in vats (up to 5% oak), then three years in bottle before release. VIETTI CASTIGLIONE BAROLO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Barolo Castiglione is a soft and elegant expression with marked freshness and delineated fruit. Indeed, Luca Currado maintains that 2015 was not a hot vintage per se, and any jammy notes that might appear in the vintage may have to do with an overzealous approach to leaf pulling during the summer season. Old habits die hard, he says, and leaving the leaves intact contributes to the color stabilization of the wine and the successful management of its acidity. From an analytical point of view, this wine does flaunt that much-needed inner crispness. It adds focus and sharpness to the layers of dark, succulent fruit that appear on first nose. TASTING NOTE: The nose shows an alluring display of hauntingly dark florals giving way to crushed black cherry, plums, and tobacco, with hints of spiced citrus and undergrowth adding further depths. Powerful, deep and resonant, the 2013 offers up a compelling mélange of wild cherry, underbrush, incense and leather. There is an explosive energy to the 2013 that is compelling. CORTE SAN BENEDETTO CAMPORAL AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO RISERVA 2009DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Owned and run by the Lavarini family, the Corte San Benedetto winery is located in Arbizzano di Negrar, 10km to the northwest of Verona, in an ancient rural court from which the winery takes its name. The family can trace its origins as local landowners back to 1800 and currently farm 18ha of vineyard. This wine hails from vineyards just outside the small town of Camporal, in the hills of Marano di Valpolicella. A blend of 60% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 20% Rondinella, it spends three years in 900-litre oak tonneaux and then another four years in 30hl Slavonian oak casks

before release. Michael Garner: Attractive dried fruit aromas – red cherry, cranberry and fig, with flashes of charred spice and cherry menthol. Full, rich and round with plenty of grip, this is a serious mouthful which is holding up well and could go on. Andrew Jefford: A fine Amarone, being not too forceful or overstated. It’s textured, deep and rich yet very refined and detailed, offering fine-milled tannins and supple, supportive acidity. Wonderful stuff. Monty Waldin: A ripely dark-fruited, concentrated new oak-influenced Amarone from a warm year which is peaking nicely. Big, bold, perhaps not very subtle, but will certainly gain fans for its exuberance, depth and character. Drinking window: 2019-2027. Score: 96 (decanter.com, Dec. 20, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: Machine-picked, destemmed, crushed, open ferment with neutral cultured yeast, 19-21 days on skins, basket-pressed, maturation in French oak hogsheads (25% new) for 21 months. There is a certain style to The Vicar that one might call dark and inky. Brooding, too. Maybe it’s the role of oak, maybe it’s in the sourcing of fruit from Chapel Hill’s best growers, or in the hands and mind of the winemaker, but it’s one intense drinking experience. ERRÁZURIZ DON MAXIMIANO FOUNDER’S RESERVE 2017Aconcagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: A warmer year in Aconcagua resulted in a lusher, more succulent character in this Don Max, although that direction had already been defined over the last three vintages at least, and there’s no sign of stopping. This wine continues to have less oak influence and continues to opt for more fresh fruit than over-ripeness. The year may have an influence in that it doesn’t have the nerve it did in 2016, but it’s still a delicious and fruity red. This blend is based on the vineyards in Panquehue, on the Max 5 Vineyard, and is 67% cabernet sauvignon, 12% malbec, 8% carménère, 7% petit verdot, and the rest is cabernet franc. Harvested by hand and matured in French oak for 16 months, Southing is bottled with no fining and no filtration.

WHITE WINE

LAIL VINEYARDS BLUEPRINT SAUVIGNON BLANC 2019Totem Estate, Yountville & Coombsville, Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: This white is fermented in French oak barrels, 30% of them new, and then aged in stainless steel – offering the best of both worlds. Quenching flavors of stone fruit highlight a rounded, rich palate, dusted in dried herb and earth. Score: 94 (Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2020)

19294 (XD) 750 mL $69.00

PEAKE RANCH CHARDONNAY 2018Peake Ranch Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Chardonnay Peake Ranch Vineyard comes from the estate and was barrel fermented and aged in 45% new French oak. Golden apples, spice, white flowers, and a hint of salinity all emerge from the glass, and it’s beautifully textured and medium to full-bodied, with bright, crisp acids and a great finish. It’s going to evolve for a decade. Maturity: 2020-2030. Score: 95 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 4, 2020)

20302 (XD) 750 mL $89.00

RHYS VINEYARDS HORSESHOE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2017Santa Cruz Mountains

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chardonnay Horseshoe Vineyard is richer and more textured than the Alpine Chardonnay, but the two wines share tremendous energy and drive. Tangerine peel, almond, white flowers and light tropical notes grace this layered, utterly exquisite Chardonnay. The interplay of richness and vibrancy is simply compelling. Drinking window: 2020-2029. Score: 95 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Oct. 2019)

STONESTREET UPPER BARN CHARDONNAY 2017Alexander Valley, Sonoma County

TASTING NOTE: I was blown away by the 2017 Chardonnay Upper Barn Vineyard, one of the finest Chardonnays in this report. Coming from the oldest estate vines on the Alexander Valley site, planted in 1982, and aged 11 months in 50% new French oak, it leads with an incredible bouquet of pineapple, white flowers, crushed rocks, and spice. With medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, a thrilling texture, and a great, great finish, this is pure class and a remarkable effort from this estate. It’s drinking brilliantly today yet I suspect has the class to evolve for over a decade. Maturity: 2019-2029. Score: 98 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, June 14, 2019)

SOTER MINERAL SPRINGS RANCH PINOT NOIR 2017Yamhill-Carlton, Willamette Valley

TASTING NOTE: Beautifully fresh and complex with very fragrant, violet-like aromas, together with blueberries, cocoa, red cherries, oyster shell, a swathe of fresh herbs and much, much more. The palate offers a very succulent, focused sense of power and a long, chiseled feel that carries blueberries and red cherries very long and very fresh. Try from 2023. Score: 95 (jamessuckling.com, Jan. 30, 2020)

WHITE WINE

ANGELA VINEYARDS CHARDONNAY 2018Willamette Valley

TASTING NOTE: This terrific wine opens with rich flavors that run the gamut from butter to citrus, apple and papaya. It’s long, creamy and salty, with precise and wonderfully complex flavors. Fermented in oak with native yeast, it was then aged another year in oak and a further six months in tank. Editors’ Choice. Score: 94 (Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 1, 2020)

20507 (XD) 750 mL $55.00

WASHINGTONRED WINE

DELILLE CELLARS D2 2017Columbia Valley

TASTING NOTE: Opens with supple and expressive red currant, green olive and clove flavors, then shifts gears and takes on increasingly muscular yet polished tannins on the long finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. Ranked #63 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2020. Score: 93 (Tim Fish, winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2020)

20301 (XD) 750 mL $65.00

L’ECOLE NO. 41 PERIGEE 2017Seven Hills Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley

TASTING NOTE: This is a deep, richer palate with currants, flowers, white chocolate and some almonds. It’s full-bodied with plush tannins and a chewy finish. Yet, it’s so attractive and pretty. A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 11% cabernet franc, 9% petit verdot and 9% malbec. Needs more time. Try after 2022. Score: 95 (jamessuckling.com, June 1, 2020)
