Most of the employees at the store have been with Grand for many years. Like every Grand store, the Bristol store’s employees take pleasure in assisting customers. Grand seeks out only employees who have a passion for working with people. Buying furniture or mattresses for the home is an important decision for consumers and Grand recognizes that and makes every effort to ensure a customer’s satisfaction. In fact, if for any reason, within 30 days a customer decides they prefer something else after their new furniture is delivered, Grand will pick up the customer’s furniture and deliver an alternate choice or refund the customer’s money. Something else that’s unique about Grand is the way customers are greeted at the door. Everyone who comes in is offered a frosty, cold Coca-Cola in the trademark small glass bottles. The tradition began at a store opening in 1953 and became a daily practice at every Grand store shortly thereafter. Father and daughter, Larry Proffitt and Lisa Proffitt Peters, carry on the age-old family tradition begun by Larry’s mother, Grace Proffitt, in 1948.

That year, Grace --- and Ridgewood Barbecue --- became known for their secret, unwritten recipe for Ridgewood’s delicious mountain-style, tomato-based barbecue sauce. Today, readers of the Bristol Herald Courier keep coming back to enjoy the tangy sauce, served in Ridgewood’s barbecue sandwiches.

At Ridgewood’s barbecue pit, on Old 19 East, 900 Elizabethton Highway, in Bluff City, barbecue

starts with high quality fresh hams. Ridgewood is one of the few barbecue restaurants in the south that never use pork shoulder. The meat is smoked for about nine hours, then rubbed with a spice blend and chilled. The next morning, the darkened hams are sliced to reveal their succulent white meat. As customers order their meals, cooks heat large servings of meat on a grill with Ridgewood’s signature sauce, then serve the platter or barbecue sandwich with a crunchy layer of coleslaw. The perfect accompaniment for the heaping portions in a Ridgewood meal is Mrs. Proffitt’s barbecue beans, mouthwatering French fries, cream cole slaw (different from the slaw on the sandwich), and amazing homemade blue cheese dressing, along with Southern sweet tea.

The menu also offers chicken, country ham, shrimp, oysters, catfish, and hamburgers.

BTES and its employees have received many awards over the years, including the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) E. F. Scattergood System Achievement Award in 1994 and 2009; the Tennessee Quality Governor’s Award, now called the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence Awards of Excellence, in 1994 and again in 2012; the Tennessee Municipal Electric Power Association’s (TMEPA) Community Service Award in 2010; APPA’s Community Service Award in 1997 and 2010, and APPA’s Diamond Level Reliable Public Power Provider Award, among many others.

“We are always looking for

ways to improve our services and succeed in our vision of being the best,” explained Browder. “This award signifies that we are heading in the right direction. We continue to expand and upgrade products and services and provide reliable, safe and cost-effective services.”

BTES employees support their community through numerous efforts, including participating in area lake cleanups, blood drives, the annual Christmas parade, and through numerous local non-profit organizations. Each employee also donates at least one-and-a-half hours of their pay each month to the United Way of Bristol.

In addition to the electric and fiber optic services, BTES has developed a number of programs designed to meet the needs of their customers including a Load Managed Water Heater Program, inspected heat pumps, tree trimming and maintenance, and an Energy Savings Loan Program.

With members living in all 50 states and several foreign countries, ECU wants to protect members’ information and offer safe and efficient mobile banking options. Of course, ECU holds the same high standard of service for these mobile options as they do for personal interactions.
