What is phonics?• Phonics is all about using skills for

reading and spelling.

How is it taught at St Peter’s?

• Every child in EYFS and KS1 is taught phonics each day for 25/30 minutes.

• Fast paced• Based on repetition• Games, rhymes and songs.

Phases• Phase 1- tuning into sounds• Phase 2- learning phonemes to read and

write simple words• Phase 3- learning the long vowel phonemes

and digraphs• Phase 4- consonant clusters and spelling

words• Phase 5- alternative digraphs for reading• Phase 6- spellings and learning rules of

spelling.

Terminology• Phonemes: the smallest unit of sound that

are found in a word. • Grapheme: the spelling of the word ‘th’• Digraph: two letters that make one sound.• Trigraph: three letters that make one sound• CVC: consonant, vowel consonant, words. • Segmenting: breaking the word up into its

sounds.• Blending: putting words together to read a

word.• Tricky words: words that cannot be decoded.
