THE MATERIALS

The Fountas & Pinnell Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study System includes a range of materials and resources designed to help you plan and implement effective literacy instruction. Here are the materials you should have, and the purpose they serve in the system:

• Fountas & Pinnell Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Lessons—At the core of the system are the one hundred lessons found in this book. The lessons are organized into the Nine Areas of Learning for phonics, spelling, and word study that help students attend to, learn about, and efficiently use sounds, letters, and words.

• Sing a Song of Poetry—Additional ideas for enriching and extending phonics content can be found in this collection of poems, songs, and rhymes with teaching suggestions.

• The Fountas & Pinnell Comprehensive Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Guide—Each lesson is constructed on one principle detailed in this guide. Here are some other useful features of the Comprehensive Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Guide:

• Additional language about the principle in the Behavior column

• More examples in the Behavior column

• Additional instructional language in the Instructional Language column

• Additional examples in the Instructional Language column

• An indication of the span of time during when teaching the principle is desirable in the Grade Level columns

• Similar and/or related principles in nearby rows of the guide

• Fountas & Pinnell Online Resources—This is where you can find the printable resources. Access information can be found on the inside front cover of the Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study System Lessons book.

• Lesson Folders—Use these for lesson organization by inserting materials from both Ready Resources and Online Resources.

• Fountas & Pinnell Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Ready Resources—Here is where you’ll find a wide range of materials for teaching the lesson content, connecting learning across contexts, and extending learning.

• Fountas & Pinnell Online Community—There are several free, members-only resources available to teachers looking for support from either their peers or a trained consultant.

LABEL THE LESSON FOLDERS

Get the white folders from your box and label each one with a corresponding lesson number from the book. Labeling the lessons first will help you organize the materials from the Ready Resources, and the Online Resources. (See instructions for the purple and blue folders under ORGANIZING LESSONS.)

“YOU WILL NEED”

Each lesson has a section on the first page called “YOU WILL NEED.” You will find it on the top right side of the page. Go to your Online Resources, find the lesson number, print out the materials that are listed there, and place in the folder that you labeled with the corresponding lesson number. Then, go to your Ready Resources and put the materials listed into the folder for that corresponding lesson. Another copy of your Ready Resources are provided there as well.

ONLINE RESOURCES

You can find instructions on how to access your Online Resources on the inside front cover of the Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study Lessons book. We suggest that you label your lesson folders first, so when you print out your online resources for each lesson, you will have a place to put them. The materials that you print should fit in their corresponding folders. General resources can be found by scrolling down the page or by clicking on the drop-down SETS menu.

ORGANIZING READY RESOURCES

There are general resources and lesson-specific resources in the Ready Resources box. You can determine which is general by the fact that there are no lesson numbers on the back of the cards. All general Ready Resources are shrink wrapped separately from the lesson-specific resources. The lesson-specific materials will have the lessons to which they correspond on the backs of each card. Below are suggestions on how to organize these cards for easy access during instruction.

General Ready Resources

• General Ready Resources can be used during Extend Learning, found on the last page of each lesson to extend activities beyond the lessons. General Resources can also provide variations on the lessons that are labeled "generative." Generative lessons are identified on the first page, right column of the lesson. To organize these materials, punch out and store into baggies or boxes by type of content (i.e., uppercase letter cards, ending consonant sounds, onset and rime words, color words, etc.). For example, look at the footer on each sheet of perforated cards to determine what resources you’re looking at and organize them by one of the following categories:

• Uppercase Letter Cards

• Lowercase Letter Cards

• General Pocket-Chart Cards categories: alphabet cards, month words, number words, numerals, color words, day-of-week words, 25 high-frequency words, 50 high-frequency words, one-syllable words, two-syllable words, three-syllable words, CVC words, beginning consonant sounds, consonant digraphs, ending consonant sounds, long vowel sounds, short vowel sounds, rhyming words, onset and rime words, uppercase and lowercase letters, uppercase letters, and lowercase letters

• Use these materials for general classroom instruction:

• Misc. classroom materials: Laminated sheets for classroom instruction, e.g., alphabet linking charts

• Two Posters for classroom instruction

Lesson-Specific Ready Resources

There are two shrink-wrapped sets of lesson-specific cards (pocket-chart cards and pocket-chart cards [long]). These should be punched out and stored in their corresponding lesson folders. The lesson numbers are on the backs of each card as well as on the footer of the sheet.

Other Ready Resources Blank cards (pocket-chart cards (long), pocket-chart cards, word cards) You can use these wipe-off, reusable cards in generative lessons or as you best see fit. Refer to the Master Lesson Guide in the Online Resources to learn how to extend learning on generative lessons.

ORGANIZING LESSONS

In the Phonics, Spelling and Word Study Lessons book you will find a recommended sequence called MASTER LESSON GUIDE. This is the recommended sequence for the system, but the lessons can be organized in whatever way works best for you.

There are two options for organizing the lessons and materials:

• Organize lessons according to the Nine Areas of Learning (purple folders)

1. Early Literacy Concepts

2. Phonological Awareness

3. Letter Knowledge

4. Letter-Sound Relationships

5. Spelling Patterns

6. High-Frequency Words

7. Word Meaning/Vocabulary

8. Word Structure

9. Word-Solving Actions

• Organize by month or in the order of how the teacher is going to use them (blue folders)

Fountas and Pinnell recommend that the teacher begin by placing all the lesson material in the corresponding folder for the Nine Areas of Learning. Then, as the teacher uses the lessons throughout the year, they can move them into the month in which the lesson was used. This will mean that the lessons will be organized chronologically for the teacher for the following year, and would only need to be revised, not recreated. In order to keep the materials organized, the resources for each lesson should be stored in the lesson folder.
