• Liwa is the name of a vast, almost barren desert region, that extends from the southern part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

• In the past, Liwa was a lot larger than today, and it was also known as the Bu Fallah desert. This name came from the Bu Fallah tribe, which was, and still is, the largest tribe in the area.

• The Liwa Desert features sand dunes reaching 25-40 feet high and holds some of its country's oldest and most treasured sites.

Location

• Situated south west of Abu Dhabi on the edge of the great Empty Quarter desert (Rub Al Khali).

• The distance from Dubai/Sharjah being some 380 km one way and from Abu Dhabi the capital city, a 220 km distance.

• One of the Liwa Desert sites is the Liwa Oasis – Site where some of the first tribes of the ancient land

made their home – Place where many of the inhabitants of the UAE can trace

their heritage.

How to get there?

• Drive a car or rent one

• Use the public transportation buses - takes 3.5 hours from Dubai and approx 2.5 hours from Abu Dhabi, cost would be like 15 Dhs from Abu Dhabi and 40 Dhs from Dubai

• Hire a taxi which would cost around 400 Dhs one way from Abu Dhabi and 700 Dhs from Dubai.

• Advised – Public Transportation will take more time than taking a car or taxi.
