Neuseeland (englisch New Zealand Māori Aotearoa) ist ein geographisch isolierter Inselstaat im südlichen Pazifik. Er besteht aus einer Nord- und einer Südinsel sowie zahlreichen kleineren Inseln. Die nächstgelegenen Staaten befinden sich im Westen mit Australien (die Westküsten der beiden Hauptinseln Neuseelands sind zwischen 1530 km und rund 2100 km von der Ostküste Australiens und Tasmaniens entfernt), im Norden mit der französischen Insel Neukaledonien und den Inselstaaten Tonga und Fidschi sowie als Kontinent die Antarktis im Süden. Weder geographisch noch kulturell lässt sich Neuseeland eindeutig einem bestimmten Kontinent zuordnen: das Land liegt teils auf der australischen, teils auf der pazifischen Platte und ist sowohl mit dem europäisch geprägten Kulturraum Australiens als auch mit dem polynesischen Teil Ozeaniens verbunden. Neuseeland ist ein Königreich im Commonwealth ofNations mit demokratisch-parlamentarischer Verfassung. Für einen Industriestaat eher ungewöhnlich sind die Hauptwirtschaftszweige Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Nahrungsmittelindustrie (hauptsächlich Molkereiprodukte) sowie Tourismus. Neuseeland wird vielfach als „grüne Insel“ bezeichnet, was teilweise der dünnen Besiedlung geschuldet ist. Diese und die relative Unberührtheit der Natur sowie die äußerst vielfältige und einzigartige Vegetation sind auch durch die relativ isolierte Lage der Inseln bedingt.

New Zealand ( Māori: Aotearoa) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres(600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of Ne Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
