DESCRIPTION
A presentation given at the RECODE workshop on 25th September 2014. It covers what is happening in terms of opening up access to research data at the University of Glasgow and via the Digital Curation Centre. The RECODE project is developing policy recommendations for open access to research data in Europe - http://recodeproject.eu

UoG policy on data management
Draft policy endorses open data and outlines responsibilities of researchers, central services and School/College level support to meet this:
www.gla.ac.uk/services/datamanagement/rdm-at-gu
“Publicly funded research data are a public good, produced in the public interest, which should be made openly available with as few restrictions as possible in a
timely and responsible manner that does not harm intellectual property.”
Links from papers to data
UoG policy• “Ensure published results always include information on how to access
the supporting data.”
• Uni encourages inclusion of a dataset reference in papers• Field for this in institutional repository metadata
Lord Kelvin doesn’t work here now?
Metadata advice
UoG policy• “Provide sufficient metadata (descriptive information) about the research
data to ensure others can discover and, if permissible, reuse it.”

Research data register
“Any data which is retained elsewhere, for example in a disciplinary data service should also be registered with the University.”
•Title of dataset•Creator/s•Publisher e.g. University of Glasgow•Original Publication URL •Publication Date of dataset

Research data repository
“Provide facilities to preserve research data for those cases where disciplinary data centres are not available.”
Pilot service based on EPrints 3.3and using the ReCollect plugin
Assigning DOIs and ORCIDs

Research data registry
• Developing a national research data registry and discovery service• RDRDS will aggregate metadata relating to data collections or

Responses to RECODE
• Good coverage to a range of stakeholders
• Provides a strong message to help lobby funders
• Gives DCC a framework to use to advise stakeholders
• Eagerly anticipate the policy checklists and implementation steps
• Wonder if some statements could take a slightly bolder position?
