After a list of keywords has been created, it’s now time to shortlist them. Certainly, not all of them are viable keywords. All of them cannot be used. In creating a good SEO campaign, you have to be able to narrow down your keywords in such a way that all of them are extremely relevant to your business and the user’s query.

There are several ways to shortlist keywords. One of the easiest ways is to use a Rank Tracker tool. Nonetheless, it’s still good to thoroughly browse over the list and evaluate each keyword to come up with the best items to include in your campaign.

You can rate the keywords based on their relevance. Basically, this is where the KEI or the Keyword

Efficiency Index becomes relevant. The index tells you whether the keyword is good enough to bring traffic to the website. There are several factors that affect the KEI of a keyword and these are: Relevance, Search Volume and Competition. Later on, you will learn how to compute for the KEI of a keyword.

Relevance – refers to how closely-related the keyword is to the kind of products and services you offer customers. A three-grade scale is used to estimate the relevance of the keywords. In this case, you will need to create separate column in the keyword spreadsheet and label that column as Relevance. Each keyword has to be rated according to relevance.

You will have to assign a corresponding number to each keyword:

1 for Excellent2 for Good3 for Poor

Search Volume (Sv) – refers to the number of queries made using the keyword. The count for search volume is done on a monthly basis. To check the search volume for each word or phrase you can use Wordtracker or the Google Keyword tool.

You’ll be able to get the number of searches per month through their search function. Make sure to take note of this. Create another column for the data on search volume.

Competition (C) – this provides an insight on how many websites are already using the keyword for their optimization campaign. In general, all sites that employ the same type or similar keywords will be part of your competition. Take note that the fewer sites that use a particular set of keywords or a keyword, the better the KEI of the keyword.

To check the competition for the keyword, simply enter the keyword into the Google search box and press search. There’s a competition value that will be provided before the search results. Take note of this value. Enter the Competition values for each keyword in another column and label it. It’s now time to compute for the KEI of the keyword.
