Tasking From OSTP

• Large Scale Networking (LSN) Coordinating Group should coordinate leaders from academia, government, and industry to develop concrete recommendations on SDN R&D and commercialization

• Identify research and development needed to implement an operational SDN network with:– Interdomain functionality at a national/international scale– 100G dynamic optical networking across Layers 1, 2, and 3 of the

network stack.– Secure, resilient functioning

Approach

• Hold a workshop among academia, Federal agencies, and industry to:– Identify short-term needs for deploying and operating the prototype

operational SDN network– Identify longer-term needs to increase SDN capabilities for operational

functionality, resiliency, security, and user ease of use– Provide a strategic plan for Federal agencies to facilitate an

operational SDN national/international Layer 1, 2, and 3 network and further development of SDN capabilities

Some SDN Development and Deployment Issues

• Interdomain policy issues:– Management and control– Resource information sharing– Identity management

• Interdomain transparency and interoperation at a national/international scale

• Technology for Layer 1, 2, and 3 interoperations• Security• Resiliency, quality of service, architecture, efficiency of

operations• Applications development and demonstration
