Determining Importance

It has to do with knowing why you’re reading and then making decisions about which information or ideas are most critical to understanding the overall meaning of the piece. -7 keys of Comprehension

The modern world is inundated by “facts”.

✓Model what’s important to remember in the books you read together.

✓Keep track of thinking in margins to review critical information.

✓Ask questions, flag important information and discuss reading

✓Retell the most important parts of a story and then pare it down to a simple summary.

✓ Identify the essential story line and ask, What does it mean to me?

✓Stop now and then to consider what’s important to remember.

✓Distinguish between facts that are interesting and those that are important.
