The Cage-Match editionfor CHEM381 – 2011
Week 2
Last week we covered…
Comparison of Google Scholar and SciFinder Google’s much faster, but less ideal information Finding authors, who published on specific topics is easier in SciFinder Some other databases Drawing structures on ChemSpider
Today we want to cover…
Keeping a log Note where you’re searching, what keywords/options you search
with, and what kinds of results you’re getting ACS writing style
Cage match! The Literature
Doesn’t say if the full text is there Can refine by topic, document type,
etc Lots of ways to sort Who’s cited who Need to fiddle around more to find
options. eg citings – don’t stick out Lots of links to follow to view articles Can make a citation map More results / less results
Type in area of research and get heaps of results
Search for exactly what you want – language, year, author, etc
“Keep me posted” for new research Who’s cited who
More results / less results
Lots of recent articles More refined – seemed more relevant,
not so general Doesn’t highlight the search terms/keywords
in results summary but does in the abstract Looks like acquiring PDFs might be easier (with a few glitches) Sorted by year – get the most up-to-date Can refine search Includes pre-prints Got *lots* more results than the others – similar level of relevance “Related documents” – based on shared references
Scopus
Review articles – SciFinder

Evaluating Resources
accurate?
up-to-date?
relevant?
basic/advanced?
Is it… and...
Who is it written for?
What kind of research is it?
How far along is the research?
What questions haven’t they answered yet?
Citing – ACS style

Summary
How to access SciFinder Scopus, Web of Science – through Library > Databases Find bibliographies for authors, and patents, through databases Structure of how journals/companies/databases fit together AND/OR/NOT – AND most useful * after a word eg accumulat* -> accumulates, accumulation
