The objectives of this course are to:

Introduce the learner to the theory and methodologies of the scientific study of language

Understand the nature of a ‘Human Language.’

Define linguistics and its theoretical branches.

Understand the fundamental concepts in linguistics

Explore the cognitive, biological, social and historical foundations of the study of language.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Understand what it means to know a language.

Understand the differences and similarities between human and animal communication.

Understand that human language has different levels (sounds, morphemes, words, sentences)

Understand that human language is manifested in different forms or mediums, namely speech, writing and often physical gestures (paralanguage).

The course focuses on the various aspects of human language.

The features unique to human language, its functions, mediums, levels, skills, families, and syntactic types.

Human language is also compared to other systems of communication, such as animal communication and sign language.

Other topics dealt with include the role of the brain in the production and comprehension of linguistic signals.
