“There’s traffic in the sky,
and it doesn’t seem to be
getting much better”
-Jack Johnson
Research Notes:Most ISVs(60%) believe that their licensing will need to
change in some way in the next 24 months to adapt to cloud
computing, with around 30% expecting significant change

It’s In the Way that You Use It
7
“It’s in the way that you use it-
It comes and it goes.”
-Eric Clapton
Research NotesAround 20% of software publishers offer usage-based
pricing today, and 20% more expect to offer it in two years
70% of enterprises indicated that tracking usage is either
important or very important

“So don’t you ever abuse it…”
“So don’t you ever abuse it,
Don’t let it go”
-Eric Clapton
Research NotesOne-third of ISVs that have or plan on implementing
usage-based pricing do not track usage at all today
(not even manually).
Just over 50% that have or plan a usage-based pricing
model in the next two years are offering tools

Show Me What I’m Looking For
“Save me, I’m lost…I’ll pay
any cost, save me from
being confused. Show me
what I’m looking for!”
-Carolina Liar
Research Notes:Most enterprises have difficulty tracking usage for the
purposes of software license compliance.
12% of publishers have no enforcement today, compared to
28% in last year’s survey
No automated tracking
Licensing too complex
IT too decentralized
Why is Compliance Difficult?

You Know That I’m No Good
“I cheated myself. Like I
knew, I would. I told you, I
was trouble. You know
that I’m no good.”
-Amy Winehouse
Research Notes:According to the 2010 survey, 13% of publishers conduct
physical license audits. This compares to 3% of publishers
in last year's survey.
The audit activity is expected to either stay the same or

for you, don’t tell me why
nothing is good enough”
-Sarah McLachlan

It Was a Very Good Year
“But now the days grow short, I’m in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage wine
from fine old kegs
from the brim to the dregs
And it poured sweet and clear. It was a very good year.
It was a mess of good years”
-Frank Sinatra
