REALISM

Realism is a type of art that shows things exactly as they appear in life. It began in the 18th century, but the greatest Realist era was in the mid-19th century. Most Realists were from France, but there were some famous American painters who were Realists also.

Edward Hopper

Born on July 22, 1882. His best-known works came from his solitary

wanderings in New York City. These include Early Sunday Morning, which shows Greenwich Village shop fronts before people filled the streets, and Nighthawks, an image of a diner late at night.

Solo shows made Hopper’s reputation: his oils and watercolours sold well, and critics applauded his quiet realism, use of light, and above all, his ability to reveal beauty in the most mundane subjects.

Museum of Fine Arts (2007).
