Question 2 – How does your media product

represent social groups

Representing our characterThroughout our opening scene the protagonists’ identity is never revealed which helps to create more suspense throughout. We covered up his identity by using gloves and a hooded coat so you never see his face. We created a negative representation of the protagonist as he is a serial killer and out to kill and target young girls.

In this point of view shot, you can see him looking through images from his perspective of young girls who could be the next victim. As you can see he is wearing gloves to cover his identity making it more effective to the opening.

In this close up shot, you can see that the protagonist is kept in the very corner of the screen with just he fur of his hood showing emphasising how secretive he is. This makes the opening effective as it leaves the viewers wondering what is going to happen and why he is keeping himself covered.

Positioning the audience We believed the best way to do this was by using many close up shots and point of view shots so the audience could see what was happening from the protagonists’ point of view, and also the close up shots creating suspense and tension. The close up shots were uses on the more significant shots such as when he was looking at the newspaper articles so the audience could get a sense of his possessive nature over murders.

Here is a close up shot we used of the newspaper articles we used. We decided to use a close up/point of view shot here as we felt it would be build more tension making the audience feel on edge as the words ‘ KILLER’ and ‘WOMEN’ stand out suggesting what the protagonists represents.

In this point of view shot used we can see the protagonist crossing out an image of a girl which could have been a previous victim that he had already murdered. This helped the audience to understand that there is previous victims that have already been targeted creating the traditional history horror genre. This helps to create the eeriness of the opening putting the audience on edge.

Trying to create our protagonistFirst off, we had to plan out what the serial killer was going to look like and how we was going to represent him. We decided that we didn’t want to killers identity to be revealed so we kept his face covered and also his hands to allow the audience to wonder who he is and what he looks like. To represent our protagonist, we first off decided it would be best for the killer to wear a hooded coat and keep to a minimum when being shown. We achieved this by keeping the protagonist to the corner of shots or for him not to be seen in shots. We used many close up shots and also point of view shots to succeed.

As you can see here the killer is positioned in the corner of the shot to keep his identity to a minimum. This adds more tension to the opening making the audience wonder what’s going to happen next.

The use of close up shots on the pictures on victims shows his possessive nature towards young girls, which also represents the social group as he is isolated in a room on his own showing he is an outsider and the only way to get attention is by attacking victims.

Secondly, we decided to use gloves on the protagonist as is created more of a mysterious plot as the audience don’t know who he is or even a sense of how old he is.

Our main character – before and after

As you can see we used a young teenager boy to play the character of the serial killer. We used props and special effects such as black and white filters, gloves and a hooded coat to cover his real identity. I believed as a group we achieved this very well considering we didn’t have a lot of equipment of props to use. I think we done an excellent job at transforming him into something that he wasn’t to help fit in with the storyline.

Our protagonists’ face is never to be shown to cover identity and make more of a mystery.

Slightly see that gloves are being worn to cover up his finger prints so no one finds out who he is.

Candle being used to represent the darkness and eeriness within the scene.
