A – SOUTH DAKOTA and a focus on
PIERRE
South Dakota has often been referred to as the
land of infinite variety. That variety is reflected
in everything from our weather to our scenery,
our economy to our state symbols. South
Dakota ranks 16th in size among the 50 states.
It was the 40th state to join the Union in 1889
and encompasses 77,123 square miles,
averaging 10 people per square mile. South
Dakota boasts more miles of shoreline than the
state of Florida and the highest point in the
United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
Population: 814,180 (2010 Census)

Economy
The state has a strong agricultural base. It is the
largest industry in the state. South Dakota
routinely ranks among the top 10 states for the
production of hay, sunflowers, rye, honey,
soybeans, corn, wheat and cattle. Tourism is
also a significant contributor, bringing in about
$2 billion, annually. The service sector, retail
trade and manufacturing industries account for
the majority of the state's employment.
Tourism is on the upswing in South Dakota. In
2014, visitor spending in Pennington County
alone contributed to an economic impact of
over $829 million.
The Rapid City Convention and Visitors
Bureau, along with communities from around
the nation, will rally together to celebrate the
direct effects tourism has on their communities.
The week of May 2 through May 10 will
be National Travel and Tourism Week.
“I think it is incredibly important Rapid City
area residents understand just how powerful the
travel effect contributes to our state’s tourism
industry,” said Julie Schmitz Jensen, Executive
Director for the Rapid City Convention &
Visitors Bureau.
The largest sources of travel spending are in food services, public transportation, lodging, auto transportation, recreation/amusement and retail.South Dakota Travel Effect Statistics (2014):27,500 jobs in South Dakota or 1 of every 11 are supported by core travel and tourism economic activityDirect spending by visitors in South Dakota averaged $3.8M per day and $159,000 per hour
Visitor spending in Pennington County
contributed economic impact of over $829
million
Without Tourism, each South Dakota
household would pay $880 more in taxes.

“Without a doubt, tourism continues to be a
leading industry in the Rapid City area,”
Schmitz Jensen said.
Travel industry officials will host Travel Rally
Day on May 5 at Main Street Square from 4 - 6
p.m. Special guest, South Dakota's Deputy
Director of Tourism Wanda Goodman will
make a presentation, and the Convention and
Visitor's Bureau will present the Extra Mile and
Frontline Representative of the Year Awards.
