• Leadership is a personal quality of an individual who organize the efforts of the followers and directs their activities towards the attainment of organizational goals.

LEADER• Leadership is the function of an leader ,

the follower and other situational variable. One who is in position of influencing others (followers) whether manager or a formal organization or an informal ,leader of an informal group or a head of a family, may be called leader.

Definition

• “Leadership may be defined as the ability to expert interpersonal influence by means of communication towards the achievement of a goal” ------ Koontz and O’Donnell.

• “Leadership is the combination of qualities by the possession of which one is able to get something done by others, chiefly because through his influence the become willing to do so” ----- Ordway Tead.

Autocratic leader

• Under this the leader expects complete obedience from the subordinates & all decision making powers is centralized in the hands of the leader. He gave orders and the subordinates are expected to obey them.

• Here communications tends to be one way i.e.. Downwards.

Democratic leader• It is employee oriented

leadership. Under this style, the supervisor acts according to the manual consent & the decisions reaches after consulting the subordinates.

• Here the communication is two way i.e.. Downward as well as upwards.

Laissez-Faire Leader• In this the subordinates are

given maximum freedom. The subordinates make their own decisions and policies, there is no interference of the leader in their work, they only interfere when the subordinates need some help.

• The leader is a silent spectator.

Paternalistic Leader• This type of leadership is based

upon sentiments & emotions of the people.

• Attitude of the leader is that of treating the relationship between the leader & his group as that of the family , leader as ac head.

• He helps guide & protects all of his subordinates but under him no one grows, subordinates become independent.

Charismatic Theory“A leader is born and is not made”Charisma is a Greek word meaning gift , thus

charisma is a Gods gifted attributed in a person which makes him a leader irrespective of their situation in which he works.

Charismatic leader are those who inspire followers & has major impact on the organization. Through their personal vision and energy.

Trait Theory

• Trait is defined as relatively enduring quality of an individual.

• According to this theory , there are certain personal qualities which are essential to be a successful leader.

• The trait theory determines “what makes a successful leader” from own personal characteristics.

Behavioral Theory

• This emphasis that a strong leadership is a result of effective role of behavior . leadership is shown by a persons acts more than by its Traits.• A leader uses technical , conceptual

and human skill to influence the behavior of his subordinates.

Situational Theory• Situational theory emphasis on both the Trait

& Behavioral. • This theory believes that there can not be any

single variable which will make an leader effective.

• The prime attention in this theory of leadership is given to the situation in which leadership is exercised.
