FILM MAGAZINE RESEARCH

By Pardeep Plaha

Where do people go to get information on film?◦ Information on film can be obtained on popular websites such as the BBFC,

the IMDB website and many cinema websites. These websites give you an overview of the film and the rating. The BBFC even have a section called BBFC Insight where it tells you what controversial or explicit content there is in a film. Other sourced of information for film would be magazines and newspapers. There are specific magazines that are catered to film and there are sections in newspapers that are dedicated to film.

◦With the advance in technology and the popular use of the internet, I would say that people are more likely to go online to search for information on film as it’s free, quick and easy. They can get a wide range of information by typing in the film’s name into one search engine instead of having to buy several different magazines to have a broad range of sources.

A bit of magazine history…◦One of the earliest film magazines was called the ‘Cinematography and

Bioscope magazine’ which was more of a trade paper than a magazine. In this magazine you would find information on issues discussed with the development of film and the film industry in the 1900’s. They also included reviews of certain films for example ‘Dick Turpin’s Last Ride to York’. Another trade paper in the 1900s was called ‘The Kinematograph and Lantern Weekly’ which focused more on the developments of business in the cinema world and provided short reviews of current feature films. Following on from that a trade paper that later turned into a magazine and website was called ‘Variety’ which was famous for using unique words in their articles.

…continued◦ ‘Picturegoer’ was one of the earliest consumer magazines about film, running

from 1913 – 1960. They posted articles about hot to get a job in Hollywood and other things that would be interesting to the public. ‘Empire’ is one of the leading magazines in the UK today even though it’s only been around since 1989; it had had huge success as it gives an insight into film star’s lives and various film facts and reviews of upcoming films.

◦The earlier trade papers were aimed mostly at richer people, mainly adults who were in the film industry; this is why the content was mostly factual rather than having articles on interviews with actors. The film magazines created were aimed at a wide range of ages from teenagers to adults; they were produced as cheaper commercial products which anyone could buy. In these magazines they had more interesting articles and more film reviews. Modern day film magazines are still aimed at a similar range but have a higher quality of print as they are now digitally made this makes magazines more expensive. There are over 200 different film magazines published in the UK alone.

Why are film magazines less popular now?◦Film magazines are less popular now than before as everything is

digitalised now and people would rather view content online for free then have to pay for it. Although, magazines designed for a niche audience still get a fair amount of buyers as certain groups of people still live a traditional lifestyle and prefer to read a magazine than go on the internet.

◦The film industry needs film magazines to provide advertisement and reviews of their films so their film could gain as much recognition and distribution as possible. The film magazines need the film industry to provide them with actor’s interviews to include in their magazines.
