Film Poster + Magazine Research

By Tom Harris

Magazine 1

This magazine cover for the 2014 film X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is one of 25 limited edition covers, I like the idea of a collection of magazine covers for the same film each showing a character or aspect of the film.

Their use of hyper-reality (the separation in size of the character and the background) is interesting as it draws the audience straight to the character.

The masthead in this issue is 3D and glossy showing the sophistication of the film.

The use of “25th edition” again plays on the limited edition element drawing in more buyers.

Draws the audience in

Main text, shows the audience straight away which film the magazine is from.

Magazine 2

Extras: shot from the film which makes the audience want to watch the film.

ADD: draws the audience in using other celebrities.

Release date helps to show that this film is up-coming and current.

CVI: the main characters, these are simple basic shots which draw you directly to them.

Simple font is used compared to the traditional large high art style fonts, maybe to show the sleek sophistication of the film.

Magazine 3

I like the concept of using audience interaction in part of the magazine.

The masthead is hidden behind the character which draws you straight to them.

The use a set of covers “the icons issue” is a good way to charge a higher price of the magazine.

Main text, shows the audience straight away which film the magazine is from.

The use of simple colours is very effective in highlighting the main characters.

The use of red text against the white/grey background makes the audience hone in on certain areas more than others.

Poster 1

Again the use of a set or collection of posters and magazines is an interesting concept

The use of a colour wash against the black and white photo is interesting, it makes the audience focus on the key features of the character.

X-men Days of Future Past Posters ½ :Magneto

The combination of two key characters is an unconventional technique that we wish to exploit in our magazine and poster.

The red could connote violence and death, but this vivid red could also denote power and strength (I want us to chose colours carefully when constructing our print based products so that they portray the right emotions and themes)

Poster 2The clear names of the actors will draw audiences in due to the actors/actresses reputations.

The characters looking directly into the camera draws the audience in and makes them want to learn more about the characters.

The positioning of the title and reviews is interesting as it separates the two main characters, is this foreshadowing the narrative of the film?

The use of green screening to remove backgrounds and floors is interesting, it creates a cloud like effect, maybe to show that they have more power than others?

Poster 3The change in colour draws the audience straight to it

The characters looking directly into the camera draws the audience in, also the angle of her head makes her think she is superior

The overlay of the film title is interesting, it draws the audience to it both by its large text size and its contrasting colours

The use of green screening and adding in the vivid colour background creates a hyper-real effect

The use of pastiche (Bruce Lee’s jumpsuit) draws in film savvy audiences
