We would like to welcome you to Capital Health’s first purpose built healthcare facility, the Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital, located in the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. We have assembled a team of experts in their own fields to design, construct and operate the hospital. We aim to open our doors to patients on December 1st, 2017.

This project is dedicated to ensuring that patients, youth and elders alike, are provided with the appropriate levels of care and compassion, enabling them to thrive and outgrow their challenges. We have gone through great lengths to provide the best patient experience available today while remaining conscious of delivering improving outcomes and ensuring our patients recover faster and better.

Dr. Mishal Al Kasimi

Why is Capital Health developing SRH?

Our mission is to provide patients with the necessary physical, social, emotional, vocational, and recreational skills to attain the highest level of independence and improve their quality of life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global rate of individuals with impairments is increasing due to the aging of the population and the rising prevalence of chronic disorders. Studies have shown that nearly three quarters of people aged 65 and above will require some form of long-term care and rehabilitation. The provision of long-term care and rehabilitation services in the GCC is severely underdeveloped; market estimates place the bed gap at around 2,000 beds, in Abu Dhabi alone, our estimates place that gap at more than 200 beds by 2020.

SRH will be developed to cater to an increasing number of patients requiring specialized rehabilitation care and those requiring sub-acute care after traumatic episodes; it will be the Nation’s first fully acute and long-term rehabilitation hospital. The overall cost of care offered to long-term care patients at acute care setting adds to the financial burden of the healthcare

system, SRH will contribute by providing cost-effective care through reduced infrastructure costs, operational costs and human resources.

Although there are a few providers in the market offering long-term care, acute rehabilitation remains fragmented and underserved; most patients sent abroad do not have treatment options in the UAE. We recognize that our future patients will want to return to their homes and communities able to lead full, satisfying lives; our mission therefore will be to provide them with the necessary physical, social, emotional, vocational, and recreational skills to attain the highest level of independence and improve their quality of life.

SRH will be developed to cater to an increasing number of patients with

disabilities.

Human Capital

SRH’s Human Capital Philosophy is “Glocalization” which is to merge the global know-how of clinical and operational teams, who understand and respect the culture of the UAE, with local talented experts in order to have a robust model and ensure the highest levels of patient and family care. The key objective is attracting, developing, engaging, and retaining seasoned talents who will represent SRH in the market.

Design & Construction

Key design principles

Patient, visitor and family experience is heightened at arrival

The application of the brand is fundamentally intrinsic to the overall and holistic experience of patients, visitors and staff. SRH has been designed with the principles of best practice, quality and function in mind.

By ensuring patient-care, the asset will provide a high-quality experience to cater to the staff needs and visitors’ accommodation, as it is of the highest priority.

A harmonious approach of merging design and function will result in a coherent and elegant scheme that represents Civic Pride and a beacon of ‘Excellence’ in the delivery of Health Services within Abu Dhabi.

The patient and visitor experience is an extremely important part of the hospital journey. This is not only the experience of the building itself, but the wider application of the brand; this journey begins at home.

While the hospital has been designed at a more civic scale that gives it a presence within the community, the entrances and pedestrian spaces where people interact with the building itself, will respond on a more human scale.

The building design reflects a strong contemporary identity and form that responds to clinical function.

Treatment of the surrounding landscape and public realm will work to integrate the building within the cityscape, creating an uplifting and positive experience for those approaching the building; considering materiality, lighting, branding, use of color and furniture. Landscape is intrinsically linked to the overall therapeutic environment and will be both accessible and functional.

The hospital will have a clearly defined and welcoming reception area from where the building is easily navigable.

The heart of the building will be flooded with controlled natural light through the use of a full-height atrium which adds a grand sense of space to the user experience.

We are designing a place of healing and are creating a therapeutic environment

The design aspires to create the right therapeutic environment. Patient areas are designed to provide the patient with privacy and dignity. In creating a calming multisensory environment, the design fosters the benefits of natural daylight, thermal comfort, human scale, color, vistas and views, and the integration of the “healing arts”.

Consideration will be given to biophilia – enhancing the healing experience through creating links with nature, which will be developed through drivers highlighted above in addition to the use of natural materials, natural forms and the introduction of healing gardens or landscape where possible.

User orientation and wayfinding within an efficient and functional floor arrangement has influenced this design solution.

Design principles respond to key aspects such as Control of Infection and adopt International Standards and Best Practice Guidance.

Privacy and Dignity - a key aspect of the design is the need for good separation of floors and patient pathways. Maintaining key clear horizontal and vertical circulation routes, ensuring that there is no crossing of flows, keeping good separation of the public, inpatients and staff. This will enable the hospital to be managed easily from a security and safety aspect, whilst obtaining a very lean and efficient model of internal circulation.

A carefully considered façade will respond to the clinical functions, providing a balance between provision of natural daylight and a clear outside view, while considering thermal comfort, glare, privacy and also establishing an appropriate architectural language that best represents this contemporary healthcare facility.

We believe in leaving a positive legacy from a project.

Key construction themes

We are building with “cleanliness” in mind Build quality dictates that the foundational infrastructure is built in a clean way that cor-responds to the patients’ internal experience. The building process is an ongoing procedure of cleaning, that allows staff to embrace cleanliness and implement it in their practice; leading to a better working environment.

We are using the latest technology To ensure the highest quality, rooms are being built in a specialist factory and sealed units are brought on site for final connections. Whilst the public will only see high quality, we will be secure in the knowledge that every element has been fitted with absolute precision to ensure a long and robust life, eliminating the chance of cross-contamination and damage.

Latest façade designs We will be using high technology glass that reduces glare and heat build up whilst giving a wonderful feeling of light and space to the rooms to aid the healing process.

Water purification Wherever possible we will try to avoid the use of harsh chemicals and opt for salt water, ozone and ultraviolet light cleaning techniques. Not only are they better for the environ-ment they are better for patients and staff.

We are employing special construction techniques Proven construction professionals from design to construction levels are employed using the best materials for the best hospital in the region.

Our target is “zero waste” during construction We believe in leaving a positive legacy from a project. During construction, we selected suppliers whose core beliefs revolve around sustainability, which correlates with our mantra: Reduce, reuse, recycle. To date we have already recycled 10 tons of metal and plastic.

We place utmost importance on safetyIt is of our highest priorities to ensure that working conditions are safe for all our personnel; we have collaborated with the best fire department throughout the construction phase.

We are focused on patient experience We are working closely with design teams and reviewing every patient interaction. More-over, we are also utilizing our existing construction practice from around the world.

We believe in leaving a positive legacy from a project.

Who & Why?

At SRH, our patients’ wellbeing is our highest priority. This has driven us to gain accreditation for comprehensive inpatient adult and family-centered pediatric rehabilitation services by the renowned international accreditation authorities, The Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and The Joint Commission International (JCI).

We will be maintaining strategic alliances with acute care facilities nationwide and will work closely with all other stakeholders including insurers, regulators and medical associations. We are also seeking to collaborate with leading

international rehabilitation institutes to exchange the best in class treatment protocols, innovative research and practitioner talent.

In delivering patient care, we believe in a collaborative approach. Patients and their families are integral members of the care team, which is led by a physiatrist - a physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine. As part of the team, patients will always know what to expect at each stage of recovery.
