Page 1: Tips for caring for aging parents

You’ve learned about caring for people from your own parents, but when it comes time to actually care for them, you may be at a loss in regards to what you need to do to help them. For many, it is difficult to actually think of our parents needing our help. For others, they have to make difficult decisions about what to do when parents can no longer take care of themselves and need personal care. These tips might not ease the ache, but they will give you something to think about:

Hire a Home Care Agency Hiring someone to come into your home and help you out can be one of the best ways to take care of your parents. In doing this, you aren’t only ensuring that your parents have someone there all the time, but also that they will get the social and physical interactions that they crave. Make sure you do your research and hire someone that knows what he or she is doing. The best nurses or helpers will take the time to not only meet your parents, but will also get to know your entire family to provide the best care.

Spread the Responsibilities Don’t try to do everything. You cannot possibly take care of your parent’s bill, health, cleaning, home, yard work, medication, and shopping. That will not only take up your own life, but it will create a sort of animosity between you and your parents that will prevent you from actually having a good relationship.

Don’t Quit Your Job Quitting your job can take away some of your possibilities. So many people want to go out of their way to take care of their parents, but quitting your job isn’t the way to go about it. You will financially strap yourself and you may not be able to help your parents in other ways. If you can financially handle it, it is of course an option, but make sure you keep up with some things that make you happy.

Learn about Medicare and Medicaid You and your parents might be entitled to help from the government. Make sure to investigate all of your options - there are state and local agencies that can help you out.

Talk to Them Remember that if your parents start to decline physically, there is still something there mentally. You have to talk to your parents about what they want to do. You might not think that going into a nursing home seems like a good idea, but maybe they will enjoy the socialization. Of course it is best to do this a few years before you really need to have the discussion, but we don’t all have that luxury.
