What is E-waste ?

E-waste (Electronic Waste) describes end-of-life electrical goods such as computers, televisions, printers, and mobile phones etc. Each year between 20-50 million tons of e-waste is generated worldwide, persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals, are released from electronic waste, which can easily accumulate in the human body through the inhalation of contaminated air

What is Global Warming ?

Green House Gases (GHGs) naturally blanket of the earth and responsible for Global Warming (more or less stable temperature) ,which could lead to severe floods, droughts, raising the sea levels and other environmental effects . In other words Green house Gases (GHGs) effecting both life and world economy.

How Information Technology effect on our Environment?

• The sum of all the computers operated across the world today accounts for more CO2 emissions than global air traffic.

• E-waste is another factor that is bothering us. 2.7% of the total

waste contaminating the environment around us is a part of e-waste, and the problem that arises is that this waste is continuously dumped into the surrounding without being recycled.

• According the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average office worker in the US uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper each year

• According to the Columbia University “ Guide to Green Computing ”, if the paper used each year for personal computing were laid end to end, it would circle the Earth more than 800 times

Green IT is the name attached to this movement, which represents an environmentally responsible use of computer systems and related resources with efficiently, effectively and minimal or no impact on the environment, & reduce energy consumptions and environmental waste.

Green IT start In 1992, when the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched “Energy Star”, a voluntary labeling program which was designed to promote and recognize energy efficiency in monitors, climate control equipment, and other technologies.

What is the Goal of Green IT?

The goal of Green IT is to increase environmental sustainability throughout the entire Computer lifecycle along the following four complimentary paths:

Green use — reducing the energy consumption of computers and other information systems as well as using them in an environmentally sound manner

Green disposal — refurbishing and reusing old computers and properly recycling unwanted computers and other electronic equipment

Green design — designing energy-efficient and environmentally sound components, computers, servers, cooling equipment, and data centers

Green manufacturing — manufacturing electronic components, computers, and other associated subsystems with minimal impact on the environment

Unfortunately in Pakistan not having effectual environmental legal compliances, for that reason majority of IT professionals unaware with this state of art environmental IT practice and lack of skills & expertise to implementation of Green IT.  As a result they are unable to get the social and economical benefits for their organization with this sustainable IT strategy.

Use Multifunction printer (Printer, Scanner , Copier and Fax all in one machine) or Duplex Printer (Double side printing facilities) save cost, energy and paper consumption

Use Inkjet printer, its consume 80%-90% less energy as compare to LaserJet Printer

Reduce E-waste, Keep your computer life at least 5 years

Use low power desktop (Thin Client) or Laptop computer to reduce energy consumptions more than 50%.

Use Server virtualizations to enhance product efficiency.
