We ‘Felt’:• That most of the village people are under the

strong influence of the village tantriks, locallyknown as ‘bhopaji’. Their influence on the villagers is so deep that from the small domestic problems to serious health issues (like sanke/scorpion bites and other major health problems) they consult these Bhopajis, who, in turn demand a lot, in cash and kind. The innocent villagers fall a prey to these people and in many cases lose their lives .

This is evidently in contradiction to what we are taught in the school. Due to powerful influence of these people, the efforts by the govt have been futile. At times we are victimized by this as in spite of a PHC in the village, our parents tend to take us to these ‘bhopajis’ Many of the superstitions prevalent in the village are due to these ‘bhopajis’

Page 5: DFC2009 India : Utilization of Modern Medical Facilities

We ‘Imagined’:

• People should be made aware of the tricks played on

them by these bhopajis and that they should be told

that behind every “miracle’ that they perform,is a

scientific reason.

• More and more people should understand the fact

that for all the health related issues medical science

is the only answer and they should take the benefits

of the village PHC.

• The people should be sensitized towards the

superstitious beliefs so that they do not fall victims to

these bhopajis and do not lose on their hard earned

money and precious health.

• We organized an awareness rally in the village and held a procession at the local bhopaji’s than (the place where the tantrik sits and performs his miracles).

We ‘Did’:

•We organized ward wise meetings with the families victimized by the bhopajis and those who have a deep faith on them.

Page 7: DFC2009 India : Utilization of Modern Medical Facilities

• In addition, we organized a signature campaign in which 58 families pledged to keep away from the superstitious beliefs.

We ‘Did’:•We had a corner play in which the children performed the tricks normally played by the bhpopajis like lighting fire in water, lighting lamp without fire, making the stones swim in the water etc. The spectators were then told the scientific reasons behind these tricks. We had read about these tricks in the ‘Balhans’, a children’s magazine.

Impact on Community:• The corner play made the people

think ‘ pani mein aag aise lagati hai! Yeh toh koi bhi kar sakta hai.’

• The community realized that till now they had been spoiling themselves under the influence of the local bhopajis.

The people came forward by themselves and showed their keen interest in filling the oath forms.

• Our serious efforts paid off and we realized that our school can be a great agent of social change.

Impact on Us:

Things that we could not make our parents understand in person, really worked well with the help of the Joy of Giving campaign.

Experience of Community Members & Teachers:

• “ The efforts of the children were really great. They raised the issue that was the most critical for this village” Anuradha (ANM)

We had never thought the the small kids could do so much for the community. They should,in future, take up some more challenging issues. Now, we expect a lot from them.”

The Road Ahead…..(in the next 3 months)

• After the successful rally, we have to ensure that the people give up the practice of

approaching the bhopajis and contact the right people for the solutions of their day to

day problems.

• We plan to analyze the cases registered with the PHC to find out whether there is a

growth in the number of the beneficiaries.

• We also plan to contact the CMHO and persuade him for the betterment of the facilities

provided in the village so that the belief of the people on medical science stays

stronger.
