INTRODUCTION

Bhilai steel plant is India’s largest steel producing plant which was established in 4 Feb,1959.

Bhilai steel plant steel producing capacity of more than 4 million tones of steel per year.

Bhilai Steel Plant has been India's sole producer of rails and heavy steel plates.

STEEL MELTING SHOP

Steel Melting Shop is the conventional route of steel making in which steel is produced through Twin Hearth furnaces and cast into ingot moulds.

Steel melting shop have varies sections for melting and casting. The main sections are:-

1. MIXER :- Mixer act as a reservoir, for storing liquid pig iron hot metal and also maintain the temperature 1300°c in a hot metal.

2. STOCK YARD :- In Stock yard steel scrap, iron ore ( limestone, bauxite, raw dolomite) and rejected ingots from Foundry etc. are stored.

3. FURNACE :- Steal melting shop has 4 twin heart furnaces of 2x250 Tons capacity. Here only 3 furnaces are kept in operational and one is kept as cold reserve.

4. MOULD YARD :- There are two mould yards attached to Steel melting shop but Function-wise they are similar. The main activities of mould yards are as follows- Receiving moulds on cooling plates. Receiving bottom stool trains after charging of ingots

in the soaking pits.

5. STRIPPER YARD :- Stripper yard is equipped with three cranes of capacity 250 tons. The main function of stripper yard is as follows- Sending hot ingots to soaking pits. Storing return ingots and shifting of ingots from ingot

storage yard to other places.

PROCESS OF STEEL MAKING

First of all scrap, limestone,Iron ore is added in the bottom of Furnace.

Hot-metal is charged from charging side through chute.

Then O2 is blown through lance.s

Page 9: Overview of bhilai steel plant

After blowing is finished, Metal is tapped in the preheated ladle.

Ferro Alloys are added as per requirement with the help of crane.

Then metal is ready for teeming into mould.

BLOOMING AND BILLET MILL

In production of bloom and billet, the Rolling is one of the most important metal forming operations.

Rolling is the plastic deformation of materials caused by compressive force applied through a set of rolls.

The cross section of the work piece is reduced by the process.

SECTIONS OF BBM

1. SOAKING PITS :- The main function of pits is to re-heat ingots and maintain its particular temperature.

There are 14 groups of soaking pits. Each pit is heated by two burners

which is located at upper part of wall of pits.

BLOOMING

The Blooming Mill is a equipped with individually driven rolls.

The ingots is passing through two rolls in which is rotate in opposite direction.

This rolls squeezing the passing ingot to reduce thickness and increase length.

BILLETS

Billet is a reduction of bloom by hot rolling process. The Billet Mill has been designed to roll billets from

blooms. Billets cross-section is 325x325 sq.mm. The capacity of mill is 15,01,000 tons /year.
