Communication within the brain is a collection ofseparate parts that must learn to work together.The two hemispheres of the brain must be able tocommunicate back and forth with each other.Dr. Paul Maclean 7. Think of a simple operation like reading.First of all you are scanning a page backand forth with your eyes. When youreyes are over on the left side, you areactivating primarily the right brain, andwhen your eyes are on the right side youare activating primarily the left brain. Soyou are switching the visual motion backand forth through the brains center line.-Dr. Paul Maclean 8. When you are looking at symbols and forming theminto words,the left brain thinksc plus a plus t = catandj + u + m + p + s = jumps.To make sense, to integrate the idea of cat and jumps youhave to go to the right brain. It is the right brain which createsthe meaning and produces the concept of a cat jumping.A major problem in dyslexia (difficulty in processing print) isfaulty communication between the left brain and the right brainhemispheres.c a t?cat-Dr. Paul Maclean 9. If we want to become a good dancer or athlete, wehave to develop and exercise the basic skills that arenecessary.The same is true for reading.Reading is not inherent to human beings. It is learned throughdeveloping and exercising those areas of the brain that controlthe functions needed for becoming a good reader. 10. Many scientists today are using the latest intechnology such as the f MRI (functional magneticresonance imaging) to now actually see what partsof the brain function when a person reads.This knowledge is being used to help develop ways tostimulate those areas of the brain in those who arestruggling to read.The New Frontier 11. The Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes is a brain-based,multi-sensory cognitive stimulation for struggling readers.It is the model you see in the following slide.It is the model I have used for struggling readers. 12. The first component is Auditory ProcessingAuditory processing begins withphoneme (a single speech sound) awarenessand the ability to distinguish one speech soundfrom another and to perceive the identity,number, and order of speech sounds or speechsounds blended, into a syllable or wordPatricia Lindamood, LiPs, 1998 14. Encoding is the ability to represent thisperception of speech sounds with a visual code.A well developed ability to encode is the singlemost important foundational skill inphoneme/alphabet-based languages and is necessaryin order to DECODE print for reading.-Patricia Lindamood, LiPs, 1998 15. We have found that the KEY to helping individualsdevelop phonemic awareness/auditory conceptualfunctionand become independent in reading and spelling lies ininvolving the conscious integration of the three sensesofhearing * seeing * and feeling.-Patricia Lindamood, LiPs, 1998 16. Returning to the model: a second componentisVisual Processing.butterflybutterflyThis requires the development of symbol imagery,which is the ability to picture the letters in wordson the screen in our minds.This helps our brain to hold onto and compare inorder to translate these symbols into soundsblend the sounds together, and say what theword is.The ability to image letter symbols is necessaryfor decoding to read, and for spelling and writing. 17. Decoding is translating letter symbols intospeech sounds: turning written patterns intospoken language.Dogduh-aw-guhVisual Processing also includes sight words.These are words we just have to recognize theminute we see them. They do not play fair by oursound rules many times. Example: through andthough, where the ough letter pattern representstwo different sounds. 18. A third component of the reading processis Language Processing.This is the ability to process spoken words aswell as written words. The development ofvocabulary is important for fluency of readingand comprehension. 19. Concept Imagery is the important keyfor language processing and comprehension.This is the ability to connect language (both oral andwritten) to mental representations or images.Language is easier to remember when it is connectedto a mental image.s - u - nDual Coding Theory (DCT) by Allan Paivio,PhD. 20. This is especially important forsecond language learners.The word c a t is learned, remembered, andunderstood best when the brain canconnect the word cat to a mental image:cat 21. For many, this final brain process is difficult.As Albert Einstein once said,If I Cant Picture It, I Cant Understand It. 22. The inner 3 circles mustall be functioning well in order to achieve the prize in reading which is Comprehension andenjoyment.Comprehension requires the brain to take the words ithas processed, and put them together as the wholeor the Gestalt in order to understand the story orgain information from the text. 23.
