VOLCANOES
INTRODUCTION
• Volcanoes are caused when molten rock (magma) flows out into the earths surface through fissures that are caused due to the movement of plates.
• This fissures, through which the magma comes out from the atmosphere onto the crust of the earth is known as the vent. The rocks and other material which come onto the surface of the earth accumulates to develop volcanic mountains. The funnel shaped depression that can be seen on the summit of a volcano is known as a crater.
Based on the chances of eruption the volcanoes are classified into three.
Different types of Volcanoes
Active DormantExtin
ct
ACTIVE VOLCANOES Those that frequently erupt.
Eg.: Mount Etna in Italy, Mount Fujiyama in Japan.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES(Mount Etna in Italy)
Extinct Volcanoes Acive at a time. But will not erupt again.
Eg: Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa.
Extinct Volcanoes(Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa)
DORMANT VOLCANOES Those that have erupted earlier and not
active in the recent past. But can become active.
Eg: Vesuvius in Italy.
Dormant Volcano( Mt. Vesuvius in Italy)
PARTS OF VOLCANOES.
1. VENT : The fissures, through which the magma comes out from the atmosphere on to the crust of the earth.
2. CRATER : The funnel shaped depression that can be seen on the summit of a volcano.
VENT
CRATER
Some volcanoes erupt the lava out with the great explosion and some others silently.
The molten rock produces various landforms not only on the surface of the earth but also inside the earth. The molten magma that tries to come on to the surface of the earth get stopped at some point. As a result of this, this molten material gets solified with in the crust. These landforms have been named according to the shapes which they are formed.
VOLCANOES AND MANVolcanoes are helpful in many ways. Though volcanic eruptions
are threats to human life, the areas where the eruption have taken place are useful too. These areas are rich in minerals. The black soil that formed as a result of volcanic eruption is very suitable for cotton cultivation. The hot springs that are supposed to have healing properties. The places have been developed as well known tourist spots. They are known as spas.
DECCAN PLATEU- STORE HOUSE OF MINERALAS
• The lava deposits of the Deccan plateau is rich in minerals. In Chota Nagpur there is iron ore and mica, and in Golconda Gold and Diamonds.
