The Eleutheran Adventurers
Why Did They Come to The Bahamas?
• In 1647 a group of European arrived in The Bahamas from Bermuda.
• They came to the Bahamas because they did not want to follow the king’s order that everyone should worship in an Anglican Church.
• They wanted freedom to worship in their own churches.
Eleuthera• The adventurers sailed from
Bermuda to an island which they named Eleuthera.
• Eleuthera means freedom.
• On this island they wanted freedom and justice for all.
The Voyage• There were 70 people who decided to
sail to the Bahamas on two ships led by Captain William Sayle and Captain Butler.
• They brought food, seeds, and tools to farm the new land.
• The first place they landed on Eleuthera, they named Governor’s Harbor.
Governor’s Harbor
The Argument• Captain Sayle and Captain Butler had
an argument and they split groups.• Captain Sayle’s ship got caught in
rough sees and was ship wrecked. • All supplies were lost so they found
shelter in a cave.
Preacher’s Cave• They held their fist
church service in the cave. The cave was called Precher’s Cave.
How Did They Survive?• They ate berries.• They farmed but the soil was poor.• They fished• They traded wood and items
collected from wrecked ships for money.
Sayle’s Island• Many people left Eleuthera because of
the harsh living conditions.
• The Adventurer’s moved to an island which they named Sayle’s Island.
• They became so hopeful living on Sayle’s Island that they named it Providence.
CAN YOU GUESS HOW NEW PROVIDENCE GOT ITS NAME?
