The Contrived Experience
“We teach through a re-arrangement of the raw reality: a specimen, a manageable sample of a whole… when the
direct experience cannot be used properly in its setting.” – Edgar Dale
What is Contrived Experience?
Contrived Experiences are the things that substitutes the reality. When the things are impossible to bring in the classroom, or shall we say it is not accessible to be brought in the classroom.
What is Contrived Experience?
“edited” copies of materials Used as substitutes for real things Designed to simulate to real-life situation
Models a material used as an example to follow
or imitate Substitute for real materials which may or
may not be operational
Mock up Special model where the parts can be
manipulated Created to follow a specific design
Difference between Mock up and Model
Specimen A part of an organism that is has been
collected and usually preserved for scientific research
Sample or a part of an object
Object Are sample of real things, tangible and id
complete itself Are also displayed in museums and used
in exhibits
Simulation an imitation of some real device,
state of affairs or process
A representation of a manageable real event in which the learner is an active participant engaged in learning a behaviour or in applying previously acquired skills or knowledge
Example:- Earthquake drill- Election in school
Games Are played in are appropriate when learners have
just short time periods for learning
What are the differences between games and simulation?
Games are played to win while Simulations need not have a winner.
Why do we make use of Contrived Experience?
We need to use models, mock ups, specimens, and objects to:
- Overcome limitations of space and time- To “edit” reality for us to be able to focus on
parts or a process of a system that we intend to study
- To overcome difficulties of size- To understand the inaccessible, and- Help the learners understand abstractions
