PROLOGUE: IT BEGINS WITH AN IDEA…. Many great businesses start with a couple of mates or family with not a penny to their names, but lots of ideas in their minds, all mapped out on the back of a serviette in a noisy café. Well, I know exactly how that works because that’s how I started a multi-million dollar business 25 years ago and which has since grown into one of the world’s most successful cultural tourism operations! My name is Mike Tamaki, principle founder of Tamaki Heritage Group, Tamaki Brothers and Global Story Tellers. After 30 years of business start-up and tourism industry experience, I have finally pulled together a highly specialised team who are armed with the skills and experience that connect, touch and transform people seeking truly authentic and culturally rich experiences, by taking them on a journey through unique indigenous stories. Our work in this exciting and fascinating area is constantly evolving with the development of storytelling trails around the world by way of travel itineraries and delivery of export ready cultural tourism experiences globally. From the disciplines of Story & Concept Creation, through to Product Design, Multi-Media Integration to Quality Control and Risk Mitigation, the Global Story Tellers team have the capacity and capability to “turn ideas into commercial reality”.

ONE: THE TAMAKI JOURNEY – Our Story So Far.... In 1987 the building of the Tamaki business began with a foundation of grand ideas, incredible passion and steely resolve to make it all happen. While sweat equity was in great abundance, real capital was sadly lacking and so too was any interest from lenders in the banking world. So from the proceeds of the sale of a treasured Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 16-seater mini bus was purchased to start what was to become a multi-million dollar, award winning business that was to change the landscape of New Zealand’s iconic cultural tourism sector.

From Concept to Conquer.…. For many years, New Zealand’s Maori cultural product offer consisted mainly of contrived cultural performances and offerings or ‘bolt-on’ cultural components of Maori art, craft and guided walks, which were all controlled by a relatively small group of major hotel chains and established mainstream tourism operators. Tamaki Tours started by offering unique and authentic interpretative guided tours, and soon grew into Tamaki Maori Village which revolutionised the way in which Maori culture was portrayed to the world, taking the contrived ‘cabaret-style’ food and entertainment concerts that were staged inside the artificial setting of a hotel ballroom, into a real life Maori village nestled amongst 12 hectares of pristine native forest. Visitors were suddenly taken on a journey through every aspect of pre-European Maori village life, a proud culture and rich history through an interactive presentation of arguably one of the most authentic expressions of an indigenous culture from around the world. The concept grew, and soon saw the creation of a whole new market for visitors seeking authentic encounters with cultural experiences outside the commercial environment of hotels and resorts, turning negative critics into positive believers. The success of the company began to spread as the ‘rag to riches’ story won the hearts of visitor’s and suppliers world- wide and would bring incredible financial outcomes for shareholders, family and community. One of the cornerstones of the business’s success lay in its ability to seize opportunities, identify gaps in the marketplace and establish a solid brand for an authentic, indigenous experience. Invariably it would also pave the way for the birth of many more authentic Maori operators and cultural tourism businesses over the next 20 years and therefore cement in place, the Tamaki business legacy that exists today. From its humble beginnings, Tamaki Maori Village experience (see; www.tamakimaorivillage.co.nz ) hosts in excess of 140,000 visitors annually, turning over $15million and employing 130 local people. Globalstorytellers was launched in 2005 to take Indigenous experiences to yet another level on a global scale with the creation of historical re-enactments and national trails that follow amazing stories. With our ‘hands-on’ approach, determination, energy and over-all travel and tourism experience, we want to make your great idea an even greater reality.

Concept Design Plan for themed Accommodation for 80 pax, catering for the Education and F.I.T markets, within the 12 hectare Tamaki Maori Village site (Rotorua NZ)

From concept design to site construction of a full size Maori Village and Colonial Town complete with a fully functional steam train and choreographed historical re-enactments of early New Zealand. Full entertainment and dinning for 820 pax (2008, Christchurch NZ)

Tamaki Maori Village “Themed Accommodation” (Rotorua, NZ)

As the business in Rotorua grew, so did the need to diversify and expand Tamaki Maori Village through themed accommodation, targeting the Education and Special Interest Traveller Markets. Tamaki Heritage Group also saw the potential opportunities in expanding its reach throughout New Zealand by spreading its operational and product base and heading to New Zealand’s Deep South to the tourism adventure mecca of Queenstown and also to the heart of the South Island – Christchurch. As part of the southern move, Tamaki Group purchased three existing businesses and also established the next chapter of the story “Lost in Our Own Land” – the Chronicles of Uitara. This bold expansion was the first historical re-enactment of colonial life and New Zealand’s War (including an early settlers town & fully restored steam train) and was a fitting compliment to Rotorua’s pre-European product.

SIX: A PROFILE OF SUCCESS – Mike Tamaki…. It all began in 1987 where I became a permanent (free-lance) tour guide/driver. In 1989, I started what was to become New Zealand’s leading Maori cultural tourism experience ‘Tamaki Tours Ltd’ from the sale of my brother's Harley Davidson motorcycle (see; www.tamakimaorivillage.co.nz). The continual growth soon established the company as one of the most successful, privately owned Indigenous businesses in the New Zealand Tourism Industry, delivering cutting edge, innovative and authentic cultural experiences. Perfecting the balance between cultural integrity and economic viability in the delivery of cultural tourism experiences also grabbed the attention of tourism learning institutes, tourism and travel academies, and lead to the development of start-up cultural business workshops and keynote presentations at major indigenous economic and cultural tourism forums. My brother Doug and I, also featured in a number of T.V documentaries which eventually lead to the creation of our own 7-part television series ‘Tamaki Brothers in Hog Heaven’ which saw us riding throughout New Zealand promoting destinations, experiences, scenery, local characters and budding entrepreneurs looking at starting their own businesses. One of the pillars to our success has been in our ability to continually innovate and indentify new concepts in the delivery of cultural experiences and therefore maintain that WOW factor for our Domestic, International and Educational markets. We have also acquired various tourism businesses to diversify our mix of visitor excursions ranging from adventure trails and treks to themed accommodation and major cultural events. Now residing in Queensland’s Gold Coast, I work extensively with indigenous peoples around the world including projects and tourism workshops the Cree and Blackfoot in Leithbridge, Val Dor and Vancouver Canada, Tahitians and Aboriginal mobs in Perth WA, Brewarrina NSW and South East Queensland.

NINE: GLOBAL STORY TELLERS – Investment Structure…. Our investment and fees structure is highly flexible and dependent upon the nature of the project, timeframes available and resources involved. All project scoping, assessments and estimation processes are undertaken at no cost and carry with them no obligation hooks or pre-commitments. We will commit to adding value to your business, only when we are both comfortable with all arrangements and you are convinced that we have the capability to turn your concepts and ideas into commercial reality. NO SET FEES: As we understand the complex nature of the “concept to product” process (particularly in the Tourism Industry), we have no set fees, daily or hourly rates per-se. We do however provide an estimate of the total investment required, on a project by project basis. This approach should help to protect you by ensuring that you get value for your investment through a clear scope, parameters and key milestones basis. ALL-INCLUSIVE PRICING: We prefer the all-inclusive approach as we discuss your needs, and agree upon one set fee for service on a projectised basis. A letter of agreement is then drawn up, stating your needs and our scope, including key milestones, timeframes, payment process and a final cost. Some costs (such as travel for example) may not be included in the initial agreement or may vary (depending on availability etc.). This approach should ensure that there are no surprises for you or us at billing time. ESTIMATES: We do appreciate that sometimes you may want some idea of what things might cost, so we have included below some ‘ball park’ costs for specific services that we provide on a regular basis.

Tourism Training Workshops - Past projects have averaged $1,000-$1,500 per day (incl GST and the cost of training

materials) but may not include full travel expenses which may involve great distances.

Tourism Business Planning, Scoping, Concept Design, Product Development and Marketing - No set fee; we discuss your needs and then agree upon time frame and one all-inclusive fee - On average hourly rates are between $80 - $120 per hour * All quotes in Australian dollars

“Owning and operating multi award winning successful cultural / heritage businesses gives us the edge over many proponents who work in this space as we are genuinely experienced, pull no punches and totally understand what is required to captivate a persons interest through unique and rich cultural

heritage”.
