Would you prefer to receive music content through a website page or a magazine page?

QUESTION #1 The most popular result by quite a significant difference was the option of a ‘website page’ to access their music content. This result was predictable due to the increasing focus on

the technological web world as oppose to the magazine industry. Website content is much more accessible and interactive for the

audience as oppose to the magazine format in which the interactive element is not as prominent. The website page choice allows us,

the creators, to play around more with the formatting, image and key components. It is also much more easily accessible for us to

update information and for the consumer to access it through their smartphones, tablets, laptops etc. directly from their homes as

oppose to travelling to a shop in which they can purchase the magazine content. These factors are all due to society’s changes.

QUESTION #2 The favoured option for this question is the ‘storyline heavy’ option. The storyline heavy option, for most consumers, would be viewed as the most entertaining. I predicted this choice due to this factor. A video very live performance heavy as oppose to storyline heavy could be perceived as boring due to the fact it is very similar to what they have seen before. This is also due to the fact that for alternative songs with a storyline heavy video, the option of a live performance video can also be accessed through companies such as YouTube and VEVO as an extra added dimensional layer to the song. This also gives us an indication the consumers would prefer more fictitious material rather than the true, authentic material given through the live performance heavy option.Live performance heavy Storyline heavy

Would you prefer a live performance heavy or storyline heavy music video?

QUESTION #3 This question was left open to receive specific answers from all of the individuals participating in my survey. The answers given confirmed most of the criteria I had wrote regarding the content of my music video. The general consensus was the need for creativity and the unique aspects to a video. Some of the answers spoke specifically about the style of the video… ‘Unique style, creative style’. The style of the music video refers to the content and the way in which this content is portrayed. A style could be a live performance element or could be a particular artistic approach. The Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ music video in style form is futuristic and artistic. This was a good example to show the kind of vision my participants find interesting to watch. OK GO, a rock band, were also credited as an example of a music video found interesting.

WHAT WOULD YOU VIEW AS ‘A CREATIVE MUSIC VIDEO’?

- ‘SOMETHING FUN’

- ‘INTERESTING NARRATIVE’

- ‘SOMETHING FEATURING CLEVER EDITING OR A VIDEO THAT'S ENTERTAINING EVEN WITHOUT THE MUSIC’

- ‘CREATIVE TWIST’

- ‘UNIQUE, OUT THERE STORYLINE AND SETTING’

- ‘UNIQUE STYLE’

- ‘COLOURFUL’

Their videos are also very artistic. The creative, unique concept is one I think is the most important. This is due to the number of answers given involving this particular concept. Although bright, characteristic videos may gain a lot of attention, for the Indie genre, emotive techniques and emotive videos may gain more recognition due to the original, authentic vibe the Indie genre portrays.

- ‘ROBBIE WILLIAMS - ROCK DJ’ - ‘SEE OK GO’

- ‘SOMETHING FEATURING CLEVER EDITING’

- ‘A VIDEO THAT'S ENTERTAINING EVEN WITHOUT THE MUSIC’

- ‘MEMORABLE COSTUMES’

- ‘SOMETHING I HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE’

- ‘COLOURFUL’

Every question in the survey received a

100% response rate. This shows the

participants understood exactly

what we were asking them

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A MUSIC VIDEO OF

THE INDIE GENRE?

QUESTION #4 These answers have given me an idea as to what the participants of the survey view as stereotypical for an Indie music video. The answers have also given me

an idea as to what is expected from us, the creators, when creating our video. Some of the given answers include; the use of live performance, low budget and simplistic.

These answers will enable me to cater my video to their expectations whilst making small changes to ensure these expectations are exceeded and certain aspects of the

video are not predictable. Answers giving the generic Indie traits, however such as the ‘skinny jeans and long hair’ choice, may not be showcasing what these participants are looking for and may just show the expectations they have heard through various media platforms, such as social media, the internet etc. I will use these answers to incorporate some of the ideas into the planning, shooting etc. of the video and adapt some of these

answers to make the video unique and not completely expected by the audience.

QUESTION #5 The results of this question format are laid out to show the most popular chosen answer and the least popular chosen answer. The most expected popular answer was that of the live performance feature. This was due to the generic interest people have in watching a band perform live or seeing some form of them perform to an audience, due to the rawness it gives as oppose to the produced radio cuts of a song. I was unsure as to where the other answers would score on the chart, however. The 4 least popular answers were; the alternative music video, an additional song, a longer version of the video and a meet the directors feature. Along with the live performance feature, the other 4 highest scoring answers all received the same number of answers. These answers will enable me to tailor my album specifically to the needs and wants of the audience. I will include the most popular answers and for the least popular answers, I will not waste the resources on making these features if they will not be widely appreciated by the audience.

QUESTION #6 The 3 most popular answers to this question are; live performance editions, acoustic editions and remixes. The 3 least popular answers were all variations of the artist covering

another song. This shows the most popular answers are all variations of the artist’s own songs. This may well be due to the

100% interest the participants have in the artists themselves and the want they have to listen to their music alone rather than listening to them cover other artist’s songs. This result,

however, was slightly unexpected as I believed the participants would be interested in listening to song covers. Due to popular platforms, such as the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, I believed this

would have circulated the highest levels of interest. I can use these results to feature certain additional extras on the album

and choose these from those most requested. . QUESTION #7 The most popular chosen answer was that of the deluxe

edition. This was expected as a deluxe edition is the most common form of album other than the standard edition. The 2-disc edition came in as the least favourable. This could be due to the lack of need for 2 discs in a CD. The deluxe and best of editions give the impression that the participants will receive more musical content as they would do if they just received a 2-disc edition. From these answers, either the standard or deluxe edition will be the chosen edition for our album as the other 2 alternatives do not seem to attract any interest or suit a majority of the participants.

QUESTION #8 These answers have given me an idea as to what the participants of the survey view as stereotypical for an Indie music video. The

answers have also given me an idea as to what is expected from us, the creators, when creating our video. Some of the given answers include; the

use of live performance, low budget and simplistic. These answers will enable me to cater my video to their expectations whilst making small changes to

make the video unique and not completely expected by the audience. The answers to this question varied. A lot of the participant answers appreciated The Script as a band and were fans of the band’s music. Some answers included; ‘Their sound is good’ and ‘very good music’. A couple of answers suggested The Script wasn’t particularly suited to their style however they still appreciated their music. One answer stated ‘their songs are catchy’. These answers will enable me to focus on the sound the band gives and perhaps make certain decisions which will enable their style to reach a wider audience.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON THE BAND, 'THE SCRIPT'? - ‘HEARD A FEW SONGS, NOT MY STYLE BUT SONGS ARE OFTEN CATCHY’

- ‘THEY'RE VERY GOOD’

- ‘VERY GOOD MUSIC’

- ‘VERY EASY TO LISTEN TO’- ‘WHAT I'VE HEARD ISN'T REALLY THE KIND OF STUFF I'M INTO’ - ‘SOUNDS GOOD’

QUESTION #10 The positive answers given all state they like the storyline of the video. Some answers suggest the story is portrayed and told well. One answer has also suggested the storyline links to the lyrics of the song. These positive comments show the parts and opinions of the video everyone remembers. These show the storyline is the feature of the video that everyone remembers, making it a memorable storyline. There were, however a lot of negative answers regarding the video. Answers suggested it was boring with lots of unnecessary drama on the one main concept which involves him sitting in the street. Another couple of answers state it was too intense and that the cutting rate for the video was too high. A boring music video will not draw more of the audience in to watch it. A music video needs to have a strong storyline or a strong visual image. These negative comments regarding the video will be used as an example of what not to include in our music video. The positive comments will lead me to take certain aspects of the existing video for ‘The man who can’t be moved’ which are liked by the survey participants and translate them into a similar form to insert in our music video.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR THE SONG 'THE MAN WHO CAN'T

BE MOVED' BY 'THE SCRIPT'?

- ‘I LIKE THE WAY IT MERGES PERFORMANCE AND STORYLINE’

- ‘CUTTING RATE IS WAY TOO HIGH (DOESN'T FIT THE BEAT)’

- ‘IT'S INTENSE’

- ‘REALLY TELLS THE STORY AND MATCHES IT WITH THE LYRICS’

- ‘VERY WELL KNOWN, WELL TOLD STORYLINE, ENGAGING’

- ‘NOT VERY EXCITING, LOTS OF DRAMA OVER HIM SITTING ON THE CORNER OF A STREET’
