Executive Summary

This report contains a detailed statistical analysis of the results to the survey titled Troy UniversityTechnology Training Survey . The results analysis includes answers from all respondents who took the survey in the 23 day period from Monday, April 21, 2008 to Tuesday, May 13, 2008. 1171 completed responses were received to the survey during this time. The Human Resources department provided a listing of all current Troy University employees. This was a total population of 2752 faculty and staff. 43% of all Troy University employees participated in this survey (N=1171).

The data was filtered by campus and University College site and a campus specific report was presented to the leadership of the respective campuses.

From my experiences here at troy, the main need for training for other staff members is basix setup of laptop w/projectors for use in electronic classrooms or meeting rooms.

Regret that my current full-time employment does not allow me time to attend training at Troy.

People (faculty) need to be trained in the use of the Library data bases.

Our problem is not training. The CAS in Dothan need a social science lab in which hardware is easily accessible to both faculty and students.

We don't need a presenter demonstrating technology to a large group. Typically, such a person has never come to realize that there is a world of difference between showing an audience that THEY (presenter) know how to do something and teaching the audience how to do that task themselves.

Becoming technologically proficient has been an utter waste of time for faculty members on the Montgomery Campus. While, on the one hand, we were forced to participate in the Blackboard Training Program, we have since seen decreasingly few opportunities to use it. Still, in teaching Blackboard classes, we have wasted an inordinate amount of time energy--and, for me, personally--resources, only to find out after the fact that we can teach only a minimum number of Blackboard classes due to some highly suspicious policy based on the main campus's not sharing its financial resources fairly with the Montgomery Campus (despite all the hype about our being ONE GREAT UNIVERSITY!)

Our area of media and music technology requires continuos training with each new major upgrade of industry-standard applications. I would appreciate university support in this area.

Training in Datatel which is used across the Troy system is a need not only for individuals but for all employees who use it in their jobs. There may be multiple ways to accomplish an objective and TROY has no mechanism for insuring that everyone is on the same page.

I am always willing to learn any new technology. Even if I won't use it personally, some of the students who visit the Writing Center may need assistance, and I would like to be able to advise them.

8. When I am on campus which varies by session. I live 60 miles from campus and cannot afford to make special trips just for training. 6. and 11. Online or CDs are ideal because each of us has different needs for different technologies and what I want to learn is undoubtedly different from what others want to learn. Group classes tend to waste time. Self-paced is highly preferable (this also enables skippng elementary material). Access to mentors is helpful as an additional resource.

Before we can adequately utilize software we first need up-to-day computers. The computer I have has difficulty running Vista. I cannot access Library journal databases. We need Bluetooth and wireless technology along with hand-held and/or laptop computers. With an increase in frequency of off campus presentations, each professor needs a LCD projector and a laptop. At this point each classroom should be equipped with Smartboards. Our counseling lab needs to be equipped with the latest video technology.

There's always something new to learn about products. So even though my need may be low, I'm always interesting in available training. Also, because I'm familiar with many of these products, I might be able to help with training.

I've trained some of Troy's faculty in CMS, and I've been the Educational Technologist for the Fort Benning School System before retiring.

I don't think it is necessary for a faculty member to be 100% knowledgeable about every piece of software you listed, but rather 100% comfortable using the software which they need to be successful instructors. For example, most of us do not need to be experts with datatel, though we probably do need to be with Word, or Blackboard (if teaching an online class).

There have been training opportunities that I would have liked to participate in but I would have to take days off my "day" job to participate.

I would like to use BlackBoard, but haven't seen a training for it.

Since I'm at least 100 miles from any Troy campus or site -- Montgomery, closest -- online is by far the preferred method of instruction. However, ordinarily any day, time of day, or month works.

University urgently needs to give administrative access to online tools such as: SkyPe, MSN, MySpace and other new tools that can be used for recruitment.

As a Macintosh user, several of the applications on this form don't make sense for me--such as using Outlook, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft updates.

I would like ADVANCED Excel and Access training; they keep offering only beginner and intermediate.

I would like to redo my webpage. I need help with this. I would like to know how to save email for documentation and not run out of space. I would like to attend an idea swap for Blackboard users - perhaps poster style/lunch.

For most tools, the manuals are at best tedious and often vague, poorly written, and out of date. Provision of adequate manuals - in any format - is very important.

Staff and faculty requirements and availability will differ.

Ref Datatel, our Intl Site does not presently have read (or write) access, but we utlize UC Intl, which is a helpful source (but student services can be accelerated if Site had access and training). As MBA (Bus. Research) instructor, appreciate the SCOB Business Research Symposia, as well as eCampus Symposia (presented at 2007 DL Symposium and 2008 SCOB Research. While presently not teaching in eCampus, aware BBoard and other training is available.

If I have the document of each course to read first, It will help me a lot.

For those of us who work a lot, the best seems to be one we can do online and at our own pace--following a set of guidelines and or directions.

I'm located in a distant location and cannot take any "on-campus" training. Also, uncertain how worthwhile the training will be for me because of my Computer Science background.

As a teacher of technical writing, I can benefit students by advanced training in multiple programs, especially graphics programs for web and print material. I do not currently use SPSS but expect to need it later for research.

I would love to learn several of the applications that I do not know

Would ideally be at our site and wouldn't involve travel. Remote training and tutorials are fine. Faculty need training on library systems if that is considered a technology.

Troy's training on Blackboard has been excellent. When updates become available, it is advantageous to have training online. Special units of Blackboard could be treated individually. For example, if you're doing a new method of testing, it would make an excellent unit in and of itself.

As an adjunct who is paid by the course, it is difficult to justify training, even if free, without compensation. Unless it is usable to me in other ways, or is given in a concise, convenient way, I cannot afford to attend.

I find that Troy technology training is much to elementary for most faculty! When I need a new application (not technology) I find it is easier, quicker, more efficient, and certainly more effective to use helps supplied by the application developers.

When I first began teaching I would have loved the help but now I don't care

One note here in Augusta is that technology is compromised with a slow response and inability to access some services - like corporate web site video and /or publisher videos for teaching. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

As an Adjunct Online Instructor, I have very limited interest in TSU training other than that necessary to keep me qualified to teach Online courses - such as the recent BB certification exam

The training for the BlackBoard was excellent! Additionally, having someone assigned that you could call when you got stuck worked well also. I would love to have the SPSS training similarly.

Previous online training tools for Blackboard... worked very well... Since we all have a variety of learning styles... I hope to see options... Thanks, DrW....

I did not learn much from the BB training that was done in the beginning of the semester. It seemed punitive and not user friendly. I need help with individual tasks as they happen not another class.Thank you.

My computer has not yet been upgraded to Windows Vista. While I like what I have, outsiders

and co-workers who send me attachments have this new version and I have trouble viewing what they send and sometimes cannot access the file. This is a problem when dealing with potential clients/guests and instructors who need their handouts copied for class.

Biggest hinderance to the use of technology is the Southeast Regions decision to remove productivity software that was not "authorized", such as upgraded file management software, Logmein remote access software and others. If you can authorize the use of "no risk" software that helps productivity, you will do Troy a wonderful service and make many of us much happier with the IT folks.

Several of the previous mandated classes were not helpful as the presenter did not know the information or it was not applicable to the School of Nursing. Before requiring all faculty to participate in a class, consultation with the program director is urged to be sure it is something that will be beneficial and not a waste of valuable faculty time.

I am part time only through ecampus and obtain training at my own place of full-time employment

TU should be ashamed of the over emphasis on expensive, proprietary, insecure, sloppily written Microsoft software.

I use Blackboard with my classes at Auburn University, but have not been given permission to use it at Troy. I cannot seem to even get anyone to tell me how I can be given permission or how I can take a test to show my skills and my students and I are becoming frustrated.

Currently I do not have Microsoft Suite on 2007 or Vista on my office computer I need this software were I can better help student in the Student Support Services Program.

My availability for training depends totally on my teaching schedule, which changes every nine weeks and is not forecast-able with much precision. Although I am a full time, tenured Troy professor in Business, I DO NOT have a Troy supplied computer, so the technology tools I have on my personal computer I had to personally purchase for my work.

I live in Nashville, TN so I don't think any training times will be convenient for me.

I am most interested in Blackboard and whiteboard. I have had training in powerpoint, blackboard, access, excel. I would like to have a refresher course in blackboard and in powerpoint although I use powerpoint now. The days of the week vary depending on what days of the week I teach during the year. I had a conflict during the recent blackboard training.

I am scheduled to learn "VTC" on May 16th

Evening or online are the only times I can train

I am very interested in learning new skills.
