We are going to be making a promotional package for indie/rock band ‘The Libertines’. This will include producing a music video, a digipak for a CD and DVD, as well as a magazine advert to promote the album release. The song we have chosen for our music video is ‘Don’t Look Back Into The Sun; which was the band’s fourth single. In terms of an album, we have decided to release a Greatest Hits album, similar to their ‘Time For Heroes’ release in 2007 however the major USP is that it will feature concert footage as well as backstage access and interviews. We decided to do this as the band have officially split up however have reformed to perform at festivals and on tour next year. The band have also released new content meaning the album will combine old favourites as well as newer material. We will be entitling the album ‘An Era’, which celebrates the work of the band throughout their time as artists. This will engage existing fans as they can connect with the old music, as well as promoting the band’s new material. Due to the tickets for their tour recently on sale, the album’s release should hopefully boost ticket sales.

The songs that are going to be featured on the album are:1. Time for Heroes

2. Anthem for doomed youth3. Don’t look back into the sun

4. Fame and Fortune5. Can’t stand me now

6. Up the Bracket7. What became of the likely lads

8. Barbarians9. What Katie did10. The Ha Ha wall

11. I get along12. Boy’s in the band

13. Gunga din

Music Video• The concept for our music video is a flashback. The video will feature a male and female actress however it will not

be a cheesy love story. Instead, it will focus on the two as they have a day out. The video will have a cyclical structure and will begin on the morning of the night before, this will then trigger a flashback and the audience sees what they have been up to. The video finishes with the final shot mirroring the initial shot, adhering to the cyclical structure.

• The video will be made in order to attract our target audience which is indie/rock fans around the ages of 17-25. The audience like music videos with a storyline so we have chosen to produce a narrative piece rather than focus on the members of the band performing the music. This provides links with existing Libertine’s music videos such as ‘What became of the likely lads’ and one of their new releases ‘You’re my waterloo’ which also focuses on a couple.

• Choosing to produce a video with a narrative not only addresses our target audience but also fits in with the conventions of an indie music video, meaning our piece will look authentic and fit with the style. In order to pay slight homage to the original video, due to the fact it is a re-release of the song, we will be using the colour red as a way of linking to the red military jackets worn by the band. We will also be using subliminal messages through the use of posters in the video, just like The Libertines did through the use of the English flags hanging out of the windows and the graffiti shown in the original.

Digi-Pack/advert• My initial analysis of existing digi-packs found that covers that consisted of a main image and minimal font are more

conventional of the indie genre. We also want to go for a simple aesthetic as it reflects the laid back character of the band.

• In terms of our advert, the main focus will be the picture on the front of the digipack. This is because it enables the audience to identify clearly with the advert in a magazine and then the album on the shelf. The advert will contain social media widgets as our research told us that social media sites such as facebook and youtube were the main ways in which music videos are consumed. I also found that this was a conventional feature when looking at existing adverts. We won’t include vast quantities of information on the advert in terms of content as we want to create hype and anticipation around the release date. However, we will make reference to the fact it is a greatest hits album in order to not cause confusion with new content and mention the extra dvd as a USP.

In terms of inspiration, I really like this cover as the font is still identifiable with the branding of the band but it’s the picture that is the main focus and the casual, everyday set up catches your eye, especially with the elderly lady in the foreground. For our cover, we are going to have the picture feature two males, which represent the frontmen Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. In terms of planning, we would like to take a picture underneath a bridge, with the subjects almost in silhouette. For the digi-pack, we will create a 6 fold structure that contains a CD and a DVD with festival and concert footage. The cover photo will run across the back of the digi pack, creating a cohesive, continuous image. We will take another picture of a similar location and have that as a continuous image running along the inside sleeve as well.
