used-carsTHE MERCEDES-BENZ R-
CLASS
Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a large ‘crossover’ vehicle,
offering three rows of seating capable of accommodating
up to seven - rivals include the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-
Benz’s own GL-Class.
Described as part station wagon, part crossover, and part
MPV, the R-Class’s main appeal is to large families.
The R-Class’s main strengths is its passenger and cargo
capacity, along with its excellent long-distance highway
capability.
The standard seating configuration, with seating for three
in the second row and two in the third row, allows enough
reasonable space for six adults (seven-passenger seating,
with a bench at the far back for three, is optional)
The R-Class is luxurious, very silent, and exceptionally
comfortable.
The R-Class was launched in 2006, with 2 models, the
R350 and R500 models powered by V-6 and V-8 gasoline
engines, respectively, being provided.
A high-performance R63 AMG model, with
370 Kw power, and a 6.2-litre V-8 was
introduced for 2007. This provided the R-
Class with quicker acceleration and better
handling.
Mercedes-Benz brought out an R320
Bluetec diesel for 2009, providing a V-6
that offered better fuel-efficiency which
was faster than the R350.
A negative of the R-Class is that it’s a
large vehicle difficult to park in the city on
a regular basis. Rear-ward visibility
without a parking camera system is
difficult, and the rear doors, which are very
useful in gaining access to the third row,
are a liability in tight parking situations.
