WELCOME

Lying between the cultural hubs of Bristol and Bath and deep in the heart

of the picturesque West Country, Saltford Golf Club is a gem set in 151

acres of stunning woodland with great views of the countryside.

The surroundings alone are worth a visit with a course of tree-lined

fairways, undulating greens and tactically placed bunkers which will give

anyone who takes it on a stern challenge.

Despite being just miles away from two of England’s busiest cities, when

you visit our course you will feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.

The course is complemented by a fantastic pro shop, large putting green,

indoor and outdoor practice areas, chipping green and a full length

driving range.

The clubhouse hosts a casual bar, lounge bar, separate restaurant,

snooker room with a full size table and conferencing facilities and there is

easy access to a very large patio area with amazing views of the 17th and

18th finishing holes.

The club is regarded as one of the county’s most friendly and welcoming.

Golfers of all ages and abilities are most welcome at this club and we all

look forward to your visit.


HISTORY

The course that is such an integral part of the club we have today, was

founded in 1904 when a group of business men and politicians took the

opportunity to lease land from Earl Temple for just £325 per year. That

course founded then is the same one golfers play on today, over 100

years later.

Over the years that followed, the course was extensively reworked and

extended with a large amount of help from the famous course designer

Harry Vardon.

Saltford is also proud to have been one of the six founder members of

the Somerset Golf Union.

Following the First and Second World Wars the club’s energies were

devoted mainly to negotiating modest rental increases from our new

landlords, the Duchy of Cornwall, who had purchased the land in 1941.

In the early 1960s the then Club Professional, Leslie Mouland, master-

minded the first significant changes to the course since its establishment.

In the nineties, the course was given its current layout with the

introduction of the new 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th and 17th holes and new

greens on holes 1, 4, 5 and 18.

The club passed its centenary in 2004 and continues to go from strength

to strength, enhancing its reputation as one of the leading clubs in the

South West, having played host to National, Regional and County events.



CLUB CREST

The Saltford Golf Club Crest was designed to incorporate many aspects

of our local history;

The Shield carries 6 golden clarions or trumpets which come from the

Arms of the now extinct Keynsham Abbey which was founded in 1166 by

William, Earl of Gloucester. Situated above the clarions are flowing blue

and white lines which represent the rivers Chew and Avon.

The Helm and Mantling are in red and gold. Above the helm is an unusual

coronet, which links the area to its Roman past.

The Golden Dragon relates to the Dragon of Wessex the Royal West

Saxon connection to Keynsham.

Around the Dragon’s neck is a necklace of brass wire on which is sus-

pended a cogwheel relating to the importance of the former British brass

Industry in Keynsham and Saltford which employed so many local people.

The Dragon holds between its claws the basic arms of the Bridges family

who bought the Abbey lands in 1552 and built a mansion. ”Maintien Le

Droit “was the Bridges’ motto.

The adoption of these armorial bearings was very appropriate as it covers

the history of Keynsham and Saltford over one thousand years.

COURSE TOUR

Saltford Golf Course has become one of Bristol & Bath finest golf

courses, providing an excellent challenge to golfers of all abilities at any

time of the year. The course is always in first class condition and rarely

closes during the winter months, when we continue to use the main

greens whenever possible.

Our PGA Pro Darren Read is here to give you the hole-by-hole tour and

a few tips to help you conquer our Par 73, 6398 yard course.

Hole 1 – Par 5, 531 yardsThis hole throws you in at the deep end as a tough par 5 sets you on your

way. To get your round off to a good start it is best to hug the left hand

side on this left to right dogleg to avoid the out of bounds area on the

right. This approach gives you more options to attempt to find the green

with your second shot.

Hole 2 – Par 3, 168 yardsBunkers on the left and the right guard the long and narrow green so

take care from the tee because an inaccurate pitch could land your ball

in trouble.

Hole 3 – Par 4, 344 yardsThis short par 4 slopes from left to right and can be tough for anyone who

attempts the green in one. Any balls that come up short may be punished

by the deep bunker on the front right of the green. A short shot left of the

oak tree only leaves a short approach and a good birdie opportunity.

Hole 4 – Par 4, 423 yardsThis dead straight hole is the highest point on the course. The fairway

rolls away to the right and the short rough on the left can leave you in

trouble. Two well-placed shots can set you up well but a par on this hole

will feel like a victory.

COURSE TOUR CONTINUED

Hole 5 – Par 5, 571 yardsThis is a hole for the big hitters, avoid the left hand side which is covered

in woodland and be sure to take care with your second shot. There is a

chance to reach the hole in two but short hitters may want to pitch up

short before attempting to reach the green.

Hole 6 – Par 4, 442 yardsThere is no room for error on this tricky par 4. Favouring the left hand

side is your best chance of reaching the green in two as the hole opens

up after the poplars end.

Hole 7 – Par 4, 346 yardsA right to left dog leg par 4 that goes downhill, this hole is relatively straight

forward but you have to be wary of the two bunkers on the left of the

fairway. An iron from off the tee leaves you a simple shot to the green.

Hole 8 – par 4, 453 yardsEverything runs to the left on this long par 4 and the trees are hard to

avoid. The fun keeps going when you reach the two tiered green and

leaving the ball long could take away any chance of making par.

Halfway House The natural stone-built Halfway House behind the 8th Green provides

delicious hot and cold snacks all the year round, perfect to pick up a

bacon roll or cup of tea before starting the second half of your round.

Toilet facilities are also located here.

Hole 9 –Par 3, 165 yardsThis hole has a very narrow approach and is surrounded by bunkers.

To make things even trickier shots normally have to be taken into the

prevailing winds. If you’re going to miss the green here it is best to miss

to the left.


Hole 10 – Par 4, 364 yardsThe tee shot is the key to success on this tricky par 4. The green may look

tempting but beware as the severe back to front slope makes it the most

difficult two putt on the course.

Hole 11 – Par 3, 154 yardsOne of the most picturesque holes on the course; a sloping green

surrounded by bunkers leaves little room for error and only a well-placed

shot to the centre of the green will give you any hope of a birdie.

Hole 12 – Par 4, 340 yardsThis short par 4 over the valley offers up stunning views of Bath and

Kelston. It is one the long hitters relish trying to sink in two but the

greenside bunkers punish those who aren’t accurate. Brave golfers will

often be rewarded.

Hole 13 – Par 4, 423 yardsA tight fairway makes for a tricky hole, well placed trees also catch

wayward shots. A three tier green makes putting tough and as with many

of our holes a par should be considered a great result.

Hole 14 – Par 5, 476 yards Out of bounds on the right and a line of trees on the left means that only

a straight shot down the fairway will see you in a good position for your

iron shot. Longer hitters may be tempted to go for the green in two but

bunkers short of the green await so take care.


COURSE TOUR CONTINUED

Hole 15 – par 4, 298 yardsThe wind usually plays a factor on the shortest par 4 on the course.

Many hidden undulations can catch visitors out but it is a feature that our

members have grown accustomed to. Panoramic views off Bath can be

enjoyed as you watch your ball fly off the tee.

Hole 16 – Par 4, 385 yardsIt’s back across the valley for the 16th and a tough par 4 which can be

deceptively long. Avoiding the bank on the right is your best chance of

making the green in two.

Hole 17 – Par 3, 156 yardsThis is our signature hole; a drop hole par 3 with a lake fed stream and

deep bunker protecting the green, it is truly a sight to behold. Aim for the

back of the green to be safe or the hazards could claim your ball.

Hole 18 – Par 4, 363 yardsA tight drive through an avenue of trees gets you on your way for the

final hole. With dense woodland on the left and an out of bounds area

on the right there can be no margin for error. Once the tee shot is

away a relatively simple second should see you to the green. With the

testing course over breathe a sigh of relief and go and enjoy a drink in

the clubhouse.


Dry Stone WallsWhen we discovered that we had an ancient Parish Boundary Wall at

the side of one of our Tees which was really just a heap of rubble; several

members including a retired builder decided to have a go at rebuilding it

Their enthusiasm and success was such that the following year they

rebuilt several dry stone walls, and this year will see the completion of

the final one.

The commitment of our members to take up this challenge and help

rebuild a part of the club that is so significantly tied to our history, shows

the passion our members hold for the club. This is something that makes

us incredibly proud.



CLUBHOUSE

Saltford’s friendly clubhouse is the centre of social activity and provides

the perfect atmosphere for people to unwind after a round in which

they can enjoy a refreshing drink or replenish the energy stocks with a

bite to eat.

We have continued to invest in our facilities and many aspects of the

clubhouse have been recently refurbished and upgraded.

The casual bar underwent a major refurbishment in 2013, the lounge

and dining area project was completed late 2012 and provides the

perfect location for all types of celebrations.

The bar is open from 10:30am-11:00pm in the summer, and until

7:00pm in the winter.

There is a full size snooker table located in the snooker room just

adjacent to the casual bar. This facility is available to all adult members.

We host a number of social events in the clubhouse throughout the

year and it is a place where members can socialise.




PRO AND PRO SHOP

Darren Read is our resident PGA Qualified Club Pro at Saltford and has

over a quarter of a century of experience, spending the last 20 years

with us.

Darren is now a seasoned Club Pro but during his career has had over

50 tournament wins including winning the Gloucester and Somerset

Championships three times as well as winning the Welsh Open.

Saltford’s Pro Shop offers a full range of clothing, equipment and golfing

accessories at very competitive prices. All the leading brands are stocked

in the shop – Callaway, Titleist, Ping,Galvin Green and Taylor Made.

Clothing items can be embroidered with the distinctive Saltford Crest

and with the emphasis on style and comfort, nothing is too much trouble

for Darren and his Assistant.

You will receive expert advice as well as great value at Saltford Golf Club.

Darren also offers a repair and re-gripping service on site which can

prolong the life of favourite clubs.

TUITION

Here at Saltford we strive to offer the highest level of coaching to both

members and visitors.

Our Club Pro, Darren Read, offers a number of tuition packages for

golfers of all ages and abilities, in both individual and group sessions.

We use new levels of technology, such as IPads and Flightscope, to ensure

you get the most from your lessons. We will aim to give you the tuition

packages best tailored to your abilities and golfing experience.

JUNIOR GOLF

As well as private tuition, from March - October we offer weekly Junior

group lessons on Saturday mornings from 10:00am-11:00am.

Lessons cost just £4 per junior and there is no need to book in advance.

If your son or daughter is thinking of taking up golf these lessons are the

perfect thing to get them started and golfing from a young age. Clubs and

other equipment can be provided if you do not have your own.

PRACTICE FACILITIES

Our wide range of practice facilities are the perfect place to warm up

your golfing arm before hitting the course. It’s so easy to practice at

Saltford with the facilities for short game and putting alongside the

main drive.

The current 350 yard, 12 bay, driving range allows for even the longest

hitters to be able to pick up their drivers and let rip. We have two

chipping areas next to the driving range to let you practice your short

game from both the thicker grass and bunkers whilst our excellently

kept practice green can be found by the 1st tee.

We also have a number of indoor practice facilities such as a swing

room and a 12ft putting mat. Our Club Pros are available to give tuition

on both our indoor and outdoor facilities to ensure your game is at its

peak before you hit the course.

Under construction, scheduled for 2015/16, is an amazing new 9 hole

Academy Course and an 8 bay floodlit Driving Range giving members a

huge incentive and enhanced facilities.


MEMBERSHIP

Saltford Golf Club has a very active membership of more than 600, with

all age groups well represented.

Our men’s, ladies’ and junior sections offer a full competition fixtures

schedule aimed at players of all standards. We also run several friendly

events and a varied social calendar.

We currently have limited vacancies in all sections, and welcome

applications from new members of all abilities

We run regular ‘welcome’ evenings for new members, who often remark

how ‘at home’ they have been made to feel at the Club from the outset.

As a club we are aware that the transition from Junior to adult membership

can be a big step financially, so to help with that step and to encourage

players to stay in the game we have staged reduced fees right up to the

age of 40. If you fit this age bracket and would like further information

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP

Academy course membership

Currently the academy course consists of 4 simple short hole on the

practice area and is predominately, but not exclusively, for younger juniors

who are new to the game. When juniors can go round the course twice

(i.e. 8 holes) in 32 strokes and are able to pass a very brief assessment by

one of our coaching team they then progress to the “black tees”.

Black tee course membership

Each hole on the main course has a black tee, situated some distance in

front of the main tees. This gives juniors the chance to play each hole on

the course without the long carries from the tee, which can be daunting

for smaller, younger juniors. Each junior is allocated an unofficial handicap

of 72 (4 per hole) as soon as they progress to the black tees and, through

the numerous competitions run on the black tees, can reduce their

handicap to 30 at which point they will progress to the yellow tees.

Yellow tee course membership

This is the full course which everyone plays.


CLUB SECTIONS

Mens League Teams

Saltford fields 2 teams in the Bristol and District League, with the 1st

Team currently in Division 3 and the 2nd Team in Division 6 having been

winners of Division 7 in 2014.

The format is scratch foursomes matchplay with 5 pairs competing for

each team.

Matches are played on Sunday afternoons or weekday evenings.

The 1st Team is usually made up of players with a handicap of 6 or below

and the 2nd Team up to 12 handicap.

After a very challenging 2014 season in the Bristol & District Golf Alliance,

36 players from SGC played for the teams.

The teams played 18 matches, won 10 matches, drew 2 matches and

lost 6...


Ladies

The Lady Captain, selected annually at a meeting of the past lady captains,

has a busy year with social golf and her charity event to organise. Our

Ladies are an active, vibrant and integral section of SGC with around

80 playing members across a broad handicap and age range. Our aim is

to organise a variety of competitions to appeal to golfers of all abilities.

Some are team games with a fun element but there are also plenty

of individual qualifying Medal, Stableford & Trophy competitions for

handicap purposes.

The Ladies Section has priority tee times on a Wednesday from 10.00

until 13.30 but we also run weekend Medals plus Alternate Days for

certain competitions. There are a number of club Mixed competitions

usually on Sundays or Bank Holidays throughout the playing season as

well as Mixed Friendlies against other clubs.

Saltford Golf Club also organise a Ladies Open and two Mixed Opens

which are very popular and fill up quickly.

For ladies who prefer more sociable though still competitive golf, there

are around 10 friendly matches per year against other local clubs. This

is a great way for newer golfers to learn from more experienced ladies

playing in a Greensomes format.

All ladies are automatically members of the Somerset Ladies County Golf

Association so may play in County events subject to competition conditions.

The Ladies field 2 teams in the Bristol & District Alliance League where

14 matches are played by each team off scratch.

CLUB SECTIONS CONTINUED

Juniors

We have a comprehensive Child Protection Policy and hold the

“high-achievers” award from GolfMark. We are an extremely

“ junior friendly” club where we fully support all our juniors and their

wellbeing is paramount. Saltford was the first Somerset club to gain

the Golfmark Award.

Junior members have a full diary of events each season but our juniors

are free to pick and choose which ones they want to play. These events

include fortnightly club nights (Sunday evenings) through the main playing

season, competitions both at Saltford and away on other courses, league

matches against other clubs (home and away) and a golf tour each year

in the summer.

Under the guidance of our three teaching professionals (one of whom is

an England coach), junior coaching is taken very seriously at Saltford and

this takes place on many levels from club night coaching for the absolute

beginner (where clubs etc. are available to loan) to coaching by the county

for the better players. Whatever the ability level of the junior, there is a

suitable coaching scheme at Saltford.

Our juniors have just completed their most successful season for many

years by winning the Bristol and District Junior League (without losing a

game) and finishing 4th (out of 30 counties) in the England Golf Junior

Champion Club finals at Woodhall Spa.

With junior membership fees starting at well under £1 per week and pre-

used half sets of clubs (adequate for the new starter) being available at

very reasonable prices, golf is not an expensive game to take up and we

would encourage you to give golf a try. If you would like to find out more,

CLUB SECTIONS CONTINUED

Seniors

We have a very active and vibrant seniors section and all male golfers

automatically become Seniors on their 55th birthday.

The Section organises 11 handicap qualifying competitions including the

Saltford Seniors Open during the year. In addition we organise several

Bowmakers and better ball competitions.

The Seniors play 4 ball better ball in matches against 15 other clubs in the

area during the season.

On Tuesday mornings the Seniors have ‘priority’ on the course when ‘Roll

Ups’ give an opportunity to play with others in friendly competitions.

Stragglers

The Saltford Stragglers is a team which offers members the opportunity

for friendly matchplay games against other clubs.

Our games are played on weekdays throughout the summer on a friendly

basis using the four-ball better-ball format.

Home matches are generally played on Wednesday afternoons starting

approx 3.30 p.m. followed by an informal two course meal (dress code

smart casual).

Players only have to pay for the meal so it means that you get to play on

different courses a lot cheaper than if you had to pay a green fee.

DRESS CODE

Saltford Golf Club wishes to convey a modern yet sensible approach to its

dress regulations and hopes that members, visitors and guests will assist in

maintaining standards expected, both on the course and in the clubhouse.

Acceptable

• Conventional golf clothing

• Shirts with collars

• New style round / crew neck golf shirts

• Shorts and skirts, which should be of a respectable length, must be

tailored and worn with visible sports socks or knee length stockings

• Golf shirts must be worn inside the waistband at all times.

Players may however wear tops outside their trousers or skirts when

they are so designed.

• Peaked hats or caps may only be worn with the peak to the front, and

must be removed before entering the clubhouse
