EBBC regrets to inform you that we are not able to sell fried turkeys for Thanksgiving

this year. As many of you know, the EBBC team who conducted the turkey fry did so

as a fundraiser to support one of our international missions projects—specifically

HUG (Haiti Under God). EBBC will continue to accept any donations for HUG.

Your Missions Committee has planned a new Missions Awareness and Fundraising Event for this December. This event, A Mission Affair…”Simple & Sweet” will take place on Thursday, December 15th from 6:00—8:00 pm and will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, followed by a raffle and auction with proceeds going to benefit the Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions. Our theme for the evening will be an Edisto Culinary Extravaganza featuring a live auction with donated items centered around our culinary theme. Baked goods, dinner reservations, lunch and dinner concoctions, exotic get-aways, and much, much more! But meanwhile…be thinking about food-related auction items you would like to donate for this great cause – cakes, pies, dinners, restaurant gift certificates, etc. Raffle items will be drawn every 10 minutes during the live auction—you do not have to be present to win. Raffle tickets for 10 large items will be available for purchase beginning November 15.

We have a huge goal this year! Please help us to meet this challenge!

EBBC’s A Mission Affair...“Simple & Sweet”

The completion of the Temple under King Solomon was a most significant under-

taking and the day of Dedication was one of the signal events in the history of

Israel. The thinking, dreaming, planning, praying that went into the Temple was a

stirring season for the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It brought joy

to hearts and tears to eyes all over Palestine. The dedication events planned by

Solomon captured all of this anticipation and pomp. There were extended times

for worship, sacrifice and celebration. God was praised and the people repeatedly

chorused "He is good, His love endures for ever". At the close of this monumental

undertaking, at the conclusion of all of the songs sung to God, Sacrifices made for

God and prayers prayed to God, in the quiet of the evening, God appeared to

Solomon....and gave His response to all that had taken place. First, God said,

"I've heard your prayer". We need reminding that He hears, He truly hears and

this is why we continue to offer our prayers, because we know He hears. And

then God said, "I like this place and I am going to show up regularly" (ok that's a

loose translation of 2 Chronicles 7:12, but it is accurate). That's the good news,

the thing they longed to hear, the thing we long to hear. God the Father declaring,

"I hear you, I will be with you" And then the sobering part of God's words to Solo-

mon. God says, "there may be problems in the future, there will surely be

difficulties encountered by you". Solomon did not want to hear that, not on this

day, a day of dedication and hope and promise. But God could see down the

road, could see difficulties that would come in spite of His answering prayer, in

spite of his promised presence and in spite of the spectacular building in which

they now worshipped. And God's prescription for that day, His prescription for any

who encounter days of difficulty, is this. "if my people, who are called by my

name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their

wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal

their land". 2 Chronicles 7:14

He will heal and He does forgive... when we humble

ourselves and pray, and seek his face and turn from our

wicked ways.

May we all pursue the health and healing that God is bringing

as we respond consistent with his prescription for our lives.

You will have to look a little closer for the small things. Start your list of weird and unusual things to be thankful for. Start today and finish on Christmas Day. It will deepen your apprecia-tion for a God who provides all of your needs. James 1:17 (NIV) “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Look for the gifts.

NOVEMBER BLOOD DRIVE The next Edisto Island blood drive is November 29 from 10:30 am until 5 pm at Edisto Beach Civic Center—please note the change of venue. This will take only 45 minutes of your time & what a fantastic gift you’d be giving! Walk-ins are welcome or you can call Jeanine Rhodes at 893-7702 to schedule an appointment. Donating is a win-win for everyone—you, our community & the American Red Cross.

Cleaning out under the house after Hurricane Matthew, I came across an old prayer journal from my first year as a Christian, 1972. My Sunday School teacher at FBC Jacksonville had challenged us to list 100 things we are thankful for. But there was a catch. The items could not be the typical things like your family, your church, friends etc. Those things are not trivial but I think she really wanted us to understand thankfulness on another level. Just a few from my list: electric curlers, backpack, chewing gum, softball and pay phones. Those are weird things. I wish I could remember why I listed them. In honor of Thanksgiving and in celebration of my 44

th year as a Christian, for which I am

eternally grateful, I’m starting a new list of weird and unusual things to give thanks. First on my list: pain. Yes, you read it right. I never thought I would find myself giving thanks for the physical pain I have in my body. It’s been three years now that my arthritis has really impacted my life. Looking back I can honestly say that the pain has served a purpose. Here is why I am thankful for this pain: It has made me a more compassionate person It has identified me with Christ in a new way It has made me stronger physically and spiritually Second thing. Curly hair – seriously, I am finally thankful. For those of you who know me well know I have a love hate relationship with my hair. Being born with naturally curly hair has been a battle for me. As a teenager, the long and sleek look was in and all I ever wanted was hair like Cher. The arthritis that has presented in my hands has made it really difficult to blow-dry my hair. Holding a brush and a blow-dryer for thirty minutes is a high price to pay for straight hair. Good news! I have naturally curly hair that looks just fine when I just let it dry. I am now finding delight in something that has given me much grief. I am grateful for the first time ever. Third - Mad driving skills – until we learned to drive a stick shift my dad wouldn’t let us get our drivers license. And being married to a Heath is even worse. All Heaths are required to have mad driving skills. That includes: driving a tractor, being able to back up a van WITH a trailer attached; being able to launch a boat from a trailer; parallel park a Lincoln town car, driving a jeep though ditches full of logs and a variety of other mad NASCAR skills. This year while attending a conference in Texas, it was required of me to drive a 15-passenger bus from Bush Intercontinental airport to Round Top, Texas, in Houston traffic! I did it, and all the way there, giving thanks for mad driving skills. Okay, all agreed these are weird things to give thanks for. What’s the point? Thankful people are healthier; live longer, have more friends. Second point, God can use the weird and unusual to bless us and bring Himself Glory. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:20 (ESV) “give thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Thanks- giving day you can look around the table and see the obvious things God has blessed you with.

A HUGE thank you to all those who participated in our two recent events:

— The clean-up day on Tuesday, October 18th, where many of you cleared the property of branches, limbs, trash and debris.

— The scheduled work day sponsored by the B & G committee where our list of tasks (and more) were completed!

The giving of your time, sweat equity and support for EBBC is especially appreciated in light of our recovery from Hurricane Matthew!

EBBC Cookbooks!

Cookbook sales are going well. Remember to purchase additional copies of “A Taste of Edisto” to give as Christmas presents. Cookbooks are available for sale at the Welcome Center on Sundays & during Wednes- day night suppers. The Cookbooks are $22 each; checks should be made out to EBBC and may be placed in the offering plate, the church office, or mailed. Please contact the office to make other arrangements.

Operation Christmas Child Get your shoeboxes now! They are located on the table across from the kitchen, as well as the pamphlets and all the paperwork you’ll need to complete your shoebox. Boxes are also located at the welcome center and in the Narthex. You can help in several ways: making shoeboxes, donating items to the bin (located

on the table) or making a donation of $7.00 for processing fees. If you’d like to drop off donations, we need coloring books, pencil sharpeners, spiral notebooks, thick rubber bands, wash cloths, yo-yos, balls and crayons. Please pray for Operation Christmas Child. Help us meet our goal of 100 boxes!

Boxes are due no later than Sunday morning, November 13th.

Contact Gail Greer for any questions.
