Set in the tranquil countryside of Oxfordshire, at Henley Golf Club you are always made to feel welcome whether you are looking for a relaxing day’s golf, searching for the

ideal course for a society or looking for the right club to join.

Founded in 1907, Henley is a traditional members’ club, situated just a few miles from the M4 and the M40 and is widely acknowledged as one of the best clubs in the county.

As well as offering a demanding but enjoyable course, Henley Golf Club also has a long history of hosting golf societies, private functions, lunches, golf days, conferences and events.

We have all the facilities that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and also has clubs and trolleys available for hire.

Our refurbished clubhouse has excellent facilities including a bar, a restaurant and a lounge area where social and business functions take place throughout the year.

The club has competitive green fee rates and we welcome enquiries about membership. We aim to provide everyone with a enjoyable experience whether it’s on the golf course or in the clubhouse.

History

Henley Golf Club has a proud and storied history that dates back to the early 20th century, with the club having celebrated its centenary in 2007.

Henley Golf Club was first thought of in 1905 by a small group interested in enhancing the town’s status as it grew in tandem with the Great Western Railway’s expansion. W. Anker Simmons, C. Franklin Simmons, E.H. (Harry) Dee - three partners in Simmons and Sons and the Town Clerk, J.F. Cooper believed the existence of a course would increase local property values and help sell the many building plots on the market during the early years of the century.

In May 1905, 70 acres were purchased and in 1907 nine holes opened, with a further nine opening the following year. Mr D Stephenson, the then Professional at Princes Golf Club prepared plans, but James Braid is correctly credited with its design, as yardages of the course that opened bore no resemblance to the original plans.

Braid had, by the time Henley was opened, won The Open four times, winning again in 1910. Born in Fife, trained as a carpenter, he left Scotland in 1893 to work as a clubmaker for the Army and Navy Store. He, along with J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon, golf’s Great Triumvirate, dominated golf for 20 years up to the outbreak of the First World War. Vardon won the Open six times, Braid and Taylor five times each and were responsible for the forming of the Professional Golfers Association.

The match to celebrate the opening of the course took place on the 16th May 1908 between Braid and Rowland Jones. Braid scored a 77 in the morning round and 74 in the afternoon, beating Jones, both rounds taking two hours to play.

Over the years the course has changed, the 11th for example used to cross the road and was 320 yards in length - this was the case till 1964 when, due to increased traffic on Chalk Hill, the hole was changed to its current position.

Some holes have been lengthened as technology improved. During the period from 1998 till the present day, new Health and Safety requirements have been taken into account realigning holes 3, 9, 10 and 18 to keep stray balls away from roads. All the work carried out on the course, such as the reshaping of bunkers, is now done in the style of James Braid by our own greenkeepers. A full watering system was installed in 2004.

To mark the club’s centenary we published a book; Henley Golf Club A Centenary History 1907-2007 by Brian Law and Michael Herriot. It is a hardback volume of some 220 pages with lavish colour illustrations. It can be purchased from the Manager’s Office.

about tHe Course

Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Henley Golf Club benefits from the natural drainage of a course built on chalk, and is widely acknowledged as one of the

best courses in the area.

Designed by legendary golfer and golf-course architect James Braid, our attractive par-70 course measures 6,264-yards, offering a true test of golf.

The course features superbly contoured greens and a host of strategically placed bunkers. It is maintained year round to a high standard, with rarely the need for temporary tees and greens.

It is a course that will test your skills and your handicap. There are six par-3s and four par-5s and most of the remaining par-4s are either just under 400 yards or in excess of that figure.

The signature hole of the course is the par-3, 204 yard 16th, which requires an accurate tee shot onto the green, with a carry of 200 yards. However swirling winds can make this hole unpredictable.

Only 2 consecutive holes have the same par, the 4th and 5th are both par 4s: Other than that you are often reaching for a different club for your tee shots. The course has a fabulous mix of holes, some straight, some doglegs, some blind and some on slopes, no two rounds at Henley will ever be alike.

Henley is a challenge to single figure golfers who are always weighing up risk v reward shots and a fair test for the higher handicap player with holes forgiving enough to allow even a poor round to be enjoyable.

If you have never played at Henley Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1, 437 yards, par 4The opening hole is probably one of the most demanding first holes anywhere, mainly because of the length, left-to-right slope and prevailing wind. Get a par and it will feel like a birdie. Drive to the centre of the valley splitting the 1st and 18th fairways. Your second shot is best played inside the sighting grass trap on left as the slope will always kick the ball to the right towards the green. Don’t miss the green right.

Hole 2, 159 yards, par 3The vast majority of players always leave the ball short on this hole in the most hazardous of bunkers. You must remember the hole is uphill and has a large fall in front of the green. Take more club and aim for the left half of the green.

Hole 3, 503 yards, par 5A great par 5 with lots of bunkers to be avoided. If deploying a three-shot strategy you want to be playing your second shot from the left-hand side of the fairway to allow a good view into the green. Watch out for the road out of bounds down the right-hand side.

Hole 4, 225 yards, par 3The longest of our par 3s. Enter the green from the right-hand side of the hole. The ball always kicks left towards the hole. It’s a long carry so check the yardage.

12

Hole 5, 369 yards, par 4A great par 4. From wherever you play your second shot you have to aim left and let the ball kick down the green. All drives are thrown to the right by this slope, but the best view of the green is from the left. The green is the hardest on the course, allow more borrow than you think when putting.

Hole 6, 278 yards, par 4Despite being a short par 4, this hole is not to be underestimated. Respect it and you can make the birdie, attack it and you could make 7. Off the tee in matchplay you might have a go for the green but in stroke play a 5 wood or a 4 iron is the best option. Aim slightly left of the marker to allow for the slope. Your second shot should either be aggressive with a wedge or for the easier option a chip and run with a 7 or 8 iron down the slope.

Hole 7, 128 yards, par 4Club selection is most important on our shortest hole. The long thin green lies across you and is protected by bunkers. When the pin is at the back you might need three extra clubs. Just make a good swing.

Hole 8, 468 yards, par 4A long and testing par 4. With the fairway sloping from right to left the best drive is to the right-hand side. The second shot, generally assisted by the prevailing wind is not as long as it seems because the ball will roll on to the green from the right-hand side.

Course tour Continued Hole 9, 531 yards, par 5A chance to open your shoulders and hit a big drive. If you hit a poor drive, get back in play on the fairway. Your best line is down the right side, especially the approach shot. Try to hit the right level where the pin is, otherwise your putt will be as hard as you have ever faced.

Hole 10, 441 yards, par 4The perfect drive is down the middle. There really isn’t any other option; don’t be tempted to cut the corner - the road is out of bounds. The green is the narrowest on the course so beware of your aiming as you approach. A good long testing hole.

Hole 11, 174 yards, par 3With the green being elevated you have to hit the target. It is always best to under club rather than over club. Beware of prevailing conditions as the tee is sheltered from the wind.

Hole 12, 430 yards, par 4Another great testing par 4. Your drive should hug the bunkers on the left so you have a better view of the green for your second shot. Watch out for the bunkers as you attack the pin on the two-tier green.

Hole 13, 152 yards, par 3The swirling wind in the trees round the green can cause costly indecision, choose a club for a bold, well-struck shot. The overhanging tree on the front left of the green has eaten up many a good-looking shot.

15

WatCH out for tHe bunkers as you attaCk tHe pin on tHe tWo-tier Green.

16

Course Tour Continued Hole 14, 491 yards, par 5The perfect drive is directed at the twin birch trees in the middle of the fairway.

Best approach to the green is from the left, allowing for the slope and the ridge 12 yards from the front.

Hole 15, 390 yards, par 4This par 4 demands a good second shot. Your drive needs to be on the flat either short of the ridge or beyond it. The two fir trees in the distance is a good line. The second shot needs to be played more to the right with one extra club to take into account the difference in elevation.

Hole 16, 204 yards, par 3A dramatic par 3. The best line is the left-hand corner of the green. Don’t forget the green is raised so the ball has to be hit the full yardage. Watch out for the wind.

Hole 17, 391 yards, par 4You can’t attack this hole with your tee shot so use the natural slope. Hit your tee shot down the left-hand side of the fairway and allow the ball to go down the slope naturally. Your second shot should be a confident, crisply struck iron to the right half of the green.

Hole 18, 489 yards, par 5Drive to the right of the fairway to open up the green for your second shot. If you have hit a great 260-yard drive attack the pin. If you haven’t, play safe and avoid the bunkers. Try to place your approach shot so you have an uphill putt.

16

tHe team

Henley Golf Club is run by committees of members with a small core of approximately 11 full time staff supplemented by a small number of part time and

seasonal workers.

At the nerve centre, the office team is two full time staff; the manager and secretary and a part time accountant. From here all of the core areas of the business are controlled – the course, membership, finances, administration, HR, bar and catering, H&S, competitions and the day to day running of the club.

Our green staff work a 7 day rota in all weathers to keep the course in the best condition for our members and guests. The four senior green keepers have over 90 years combined service to the club so far so it’s fair to say that they know and love the ground they work on.

Finally in the clubhouse we have 4 full timers working the bar and catering, supplemented when necessary with part time workers.

Henley Golf Club was awarded GolfMark accreditation in 2009 recognising our junior friendly facilities which help introduce young people to golf in a safe professional and

fun environment.

We have links with most of the local primary and secondary schools and provide free coaching and scholarships to encourage increased participation from local girls and boys.

Currently we have 65 Juniors, including a record number of girls, who enjoy an active programme of competitions and fun events. Two of our former Juniors are studying golf at universities in the USA and others are working towards or have achieved PGA qualifications in the UK.

Under the enthusiastic leadership of our Junior Organiser and Committee and supported by the Professional staff we are keen to welcome new members between ages 11 and 17. The Club has recently significantly reduced subscriptions for local young people to encourage the widest possible uptake of membership. Coaching is also available for younger children.

Corporate days

Henley Golf Club is delighted to offer businesses the opportunity to make use of our Club for corporate golf days or as the memorable spot for a meeting. You will find us willing, welcoming and

accommodating hosts.

If you are looking for a change of pace for your staff and a different venue for your meeting, there is no better spot. The course and the clubhouse are in a delightful setting, offer invigorating views and create the perfect environment away from the hustle and bustle of daily office life in which to conduct business.

Packages can be tailored to meet your individual needs, while our office is happy to take care of the organisation so you can concentrate on your guests.

The clubhouse is an ideal facility for corporate events, business meetings or private parties and can also be prepared to host a presentation with a theatre-style seating plan.

Food and drink are available throughout the day and, by discussing your catering requirements with our staff, we can tailor the day to your budget, offering anything from tea/coffee and biscuits right through to a full three-course meal.

Clients can make use of our free clubhouse facilities, with Wi-Fi readily available and flipcharts for use, while we can also supply you with audio-visual facilities for those important presentations, or you are welcome to bring your own.

If you really want to make the most of your time with us, why not get the day’s business taken care of in the morning and consider rewarding your staff with a round of golf in the afternoon?

One of our professional team would be delighted to put on a group golfing clinic and if you invest in a few prizes from the well-stocked Pro Shop to use for a few fun competitions, you can be guaranteed a day that remains long in your delegates’ minds.

Corporate golf is a great way of rewarding your employees and clients, a way of saying thank you and an opportunity to spend productive time with them in a friendly and challenging environment.

HOME OF @THE ASOCIATION OF JAMES BRAID COURSES

Henley was designed by one of Britain’s most famous golfers, James Braid who won the Open five times and with JH Taylor and Harry Vardon, not only dominated golf in the early 1900s, but were instrumental in forming the P.G.A.

Some years ago, Henley became the home of the Association and as a member at Henley, you have the added benefit of being able to play over 200 of the courses Braid was involved in designing in his lifetime, for a very much reduced green fee. These include the King’s (14th hole, 215 yard par 4, pictured) and Queen’s at Gleneagles, St Enodoc, Brora, Aberdovey, Waterford and Rosemount atThe Blairgowrie as well as many lesser but equally good and challenging village courses that he was involved in the design of, throughout Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland as well as The St Andrews in New York.

To see the full list of member clubs visit www.henleygc.com

As a member of Henley Golf Club you are not simply becoming a member of one of the finest clubs and golf courses in the region, you are buying into a piece of history.

We have used our club name and standing in the community to secure numerous golfing and social benefits on behalf of the membership. These include special green fee rates at several regional clubs.

We also have arrangements with seven other local clubs in which we have a discounted fee which secures a tee time for up to four players. The seven courses we enjoy reciprocal arrangements with are:

Alternatively, if you would like to get more information on our reciprocal arrangements please call our office on 01491 575742 or email [email protected]

open Competitions

Henley Golf Club enjoys a variety of open golf competitions throughout the year with different formats. These have attracted visiting golfers from the length and breadth of

the country and on a few occasions we have enjoyed welcoming friends from overseas. The competitions include a Ladies Open, Ladies Greensomes, Mixed Open, Junior Open & Seniors Opens.

The Ladies kick-off the summer season with the Ladies Open, an 18-hole individual Stableford, at the beginning of June.

The Seniors 4BBB Open is held in early July and sees teams of two contest an 18-hole Fourball Betterball competition.

Early August sees the Junior Open, an 18 or 36-hole medal competition. The Mixed Open at the end of the month is an 18-hole Betterball Stableford with coffee on arrival before a two-course lunch after the competition.

The second Senior Open of the summer takes place in September. It is an 18-hole Stableford with coffee and a bacon role on arrival and a two-course lunch and prize presentation afterwards.

The final event of the season is the Greensomes Open in October.

PRO AM

We hold a Pro Am competition on the last Sunday in July each year. Regional PGA professionals always enjoy our event as the organisation, course and food are second to none. The Pros play for a handsome cash amount while the successful amateur teams are rewarded with an array of prizes. The 40 team spaces are filled quickly so contact the office early in the year if you would like to play.

Henley Golf Club doesn’t just want to be thought of as a place to come and enjoy an excellent round of golf, the club wants members and visitors to feel so comfortable and

at ease here that it becomes like a second home.

While there is a lovely course, there is so much more to offer and all are invited to spend some time here whether the golf clubs have been popped in the car boot or not.

There is a lively social side to Henley with numerous events organised throughout the year.

The various themed dining evenings always prove to be very popular as members like to take every opportunity to enjoy the excellent catering on offer at the club.

There are key dates throughout the year that include Captain’s and President’s Days. Christmas and New Year’s Eve tend to be celebrated with a sit-down meal and some form of musical entertainment and the members also enjoy a range of other events throughout the year.

The club’s presentation evenings and annual dinner dance are also well-attended events which are eagerly anticipated by members.

Additionally, as a Henley member you may hire the function rooms at a nominal charge for your special occasion. For more information about social events don’t hesitate to contact us on 01491 575742.
