Contrast agents interact withthrombolytics?

The possibility of an interaction between contrastagents and thrombolytics has been identified byinvestigators from the US.

An in vitro study conducted by the investigatorsshowed that the contrast agents sodium amidotrizoate[‘Hypaque 76’] and iohexol [‘Omnipaque’] delayed theonset of lysis induced by streptokinase, urokinase andalteplase, and that ioxaglate sodium/ioxaglatemeglumine [‘Hexabrix’] delayed the onset of lysis byalteplase and urokinase, but not streptokinase. Theimpairment of fibrinolysis was reduced by increasing theconcentration of thrombolytic agent.

In vivo data from patients undergoing angiographyusing iohexol also showed delays in the onset of lysis byalteplase and urokinase, but not streptokinase.

According to the investigators, these findings mayhave considerable clinical relevance when thrombolyticagents are used during angiography.Dehmer GJ, et al.
