Principal’sMessageTermThreeistraditionallyaverybusyandproductivepartoftheschoolyearandthisyeariscertainlynoexception.OurupperschoolstudentsinparticularareworkingveryhardwiththeYear11’sabouttocommencetheirsemesterexamsandtheYear12’stheirmockexams.ManyoftheYear12’shavebeenattendingvoluntaryafterschoolrevisionseminarsandprioritisingtheirstudiesintheleaduptotheirfinalexams.InthepastcoupleofweekswehavecelebratedScienceWeek,LiteracyWeekandBookWeekwithmoststaffandstudentsparticipatinginarangeofclassroomandlunchtimeactivitiesanddisplaysthroughouttheschool.Today’sInterhouseAthleticsCarnivalwasaveryenjoyableeventwithhighlevelsofattendanceandparticipation.ItwasgreattoseemoststudentsdressedintheirHousecoloursandhavinglotsoffun.TheSeptemberMusicConcertatthePerthModernSchoolAuditoriumwasconductedthisweekandIwasagainveryimpressedbythecommitmentoftheMusicstudentsandstaffandbythestandardofperformance.Applecrossstudentshavebeenwellrepresentedinthe‘YoungOriginals’exhibitionwhichisanexcitingeventinthecalendarofpublicschoolsinWesternAustralia.Thisexhibitionpromotesexcellenceinthevisualartsacrossarangeofartisticmediumsincludingcomputergeneratedworks;graphicdesign;printmedia;sculpture;videoartandtextiles.It’satremendousachievementtobechosenforexhibitionandbothteachersandstudentsarebothtobecongratulatedongettingtheircreativity,insightandskillrecognised.Moreinformationonourentriesincludingphotographswillbeincludedinthenextbulletin.YoumighthavealsoseenourYear11studentsonTodayTonightthisweekastheyexemplifiedtheirworkintheFionaStanleyHospitalArtCompetition.

EarlierthisyearIspoketostudentsaboutasituationwherearecruitmentfirmwasconductingtheinitialselectionprocessforalargenumberofapplicants.ApplicantsweretoldtoarriveatanaddressintheCBDat8.30am.Unfortunately,forthenearlyonethirdofapplicantswhoarrivedjustafewsecondsafter8.30am,theyweretoldthatnomoreapplicantswouldbeadmitted.Mostoftheselatearrivalswereangryasthetraffichadbeenveryheavyandoneofthetwoelevatorsinthebuildingwereoutoforderandsoon.However,therecruitmentfirmlaterwrotetoapplicantstoremindthemhowmuchprioritytheirclientsplacedongoodtime

keeping.Theiradvicetoapplicantswastoaimtoarriveforinterviewsatleast15minutesearlyasnoexcuseswouldbeacceptedforlatearrivals.

Eachmorningwehaveasignificantnumberofstudentswhoarrivelateforclass,sometimesevenwhenassessmentsandexamsarebeingconducted.Whileasmallnumberoflatearrivalshavegenuinereasonsforbeinglateoccasionally,themajorityhavenovalidexcuseandhavesimplydevelopedahabitofbeingtardy.Ouradvicetostudentsistoensurethatgoodhabitsaredevelopedatschoolandaimtoarriveatleasttenorfifteenminutesbeforethewarningsirenat8.25am.Iwouldhatetoseeanyofourstudentsmissthestartofanimportantexamorjobinterviewbecauseofanentrenchedhabitoftardiness.Asyouknow,wehaveputinplaceanewattendancesystemandconsequencestohelpsupportstudentstomakegoodchoicesaboutthismatter.

Iamimpressedwithhowwellmannered,politeandfriendlyourstudentsare.Itisanabsolutepleasuretowanderaroundtheschoolandhaveachatwithstudents.Wereceiveanumberofphonecalls,lettersandemailsfrommembersofthepublicpraisingourstudentsfortheirgeneralmannersandpoliteness.WhileweoccasionallyreceiveacomplaintthatanApplecrossstudentdidnotgivetheirseattoanadultonthebus,wereceivetwiceasmanycomplimentsaboutstudentsdoingtherightthing.Wealsoknowthatpeoplearemoreinclinedtocomplainaboutnegativebehaviourthantheyaretoreportthepositives.Whilewewanttoknowaboutanystudentsactinginamannerthatdetractsfromtheschoolsimage,overallIbelievethatourstudentsareacredittothemselves,theirfamiliesandtheirschoolandthiscanonlyenhancethereputationoftheschoolinthebroadercommunity.

Iwishallstudentswellforthenextfewweeksastheycontinuetoconsolidateandexpandtheirskillsandlevelofunderstanding.Inparticular,IwishourYear12studentstheverybestastheyprepareforthisveryimportantphaseoftheirschoolliveswitharangeoffinalassessmentsandexams.Iknowthatthevastmajorityhaveworkedveryhardandwillgettherewardsthattheydeserve.

Theresidentsintheareahavelodgedformalcomplaintstotheschoolabout:

• illegaldoubleparking,

• blockingaccesstothedrivewaysofprivatehomes,

• parkingonverges,

• blockingsightlinesofvehiclesexitingtheschoolcarparkandthedrivewaysofprivatehomes.

TheTrafficPoliceandMelvilleCityCouncilRangershavebeeninformedoftheissuesandwillbetargetingtheareasaroundtheschool.

YouareencouragedtodrivesouthalongLinksRoadtofindavaliddropoffbayontheleft(schoolside).IfyouneedtotravelnorthalongLinksRoad(fromGardenCityend)youcanturnrightintoLeverburghStreetanddropoffatthebottomoftheschoolandyourchildcanwalkupthroughtheschooloval.Itisnotacceptabletostand/park/dropoffonthewesternsideofLinksRoadasthiscreatesadoubleobstruction;itisanostandingzoneandnecessitatesadangerouscrossingofLinksRoadforstudents.

Pleaseconsiderencouragingyourchildtowalk,rideabike,usepublictransportorutiliseanalternativedropoffandpickupasthiswillhelptoeasetrafficcongestionaroundtheschool.

Asawhole,theschoolwassecondtoStHilda’sfortheEricCarlinAward,whichrecognisesthehigh-schoolwiththemostfinalists.Congratulationstoallstudentswhoenteredtheirworkandtotheteacherswhorecommendedtheydoso.Writingcreativelyisanimportantapplicationofthewrittenwordandrequiresconsiderableskilltodoiteffectively.

LiteracyWeek25AugustmarksthebeginningofNationalLiteracyandNumeracyWeek.TheApplecrosscommunitybecameinvolvedonTuesday,duringPeriodTwowhentheentireschoolstoppedforafewminutesforsomeoneineveryclasstoreadapoemaloud.Readingaloudpromotescarefulscrutinyofthewrittenwordandgivessoundtoourincrediblelanguage.AllstudentsareencouragedtoreadaspartoftheirEnglishcoursesandforoverallliteracy.Justtwentyminutesadaycanimprovevocabulary,understandingandfluencywithlanguage.

Thankyoutoeveryonewhosupportedthisexercise.Onehopesenjoymentwasoneoftheresults.

TheatreExcursionAspartoftheenrichmentofstudentsintheexperienceofEnglishLiteratureasacourseofstudy,studentsareinvitedtoattendthetheatreonoccasion.OnFriday19August,thirtystudentsattendedtheWAAPAproductionofGreatExpectations.Thisisatextcurrentlyunderstudyasanovelanditwasinterestingtoseetheadaptationofthetexttoaplay.Theactorswereexcellentandstudentsgainedconsiderableinsightintotheramificationsofplotandtherepresentationofcharacterbyviewingtheperformance.ApplecrossSHSstudentsbehavedwithmaturityanditwasapleasuretoattendthetheatrewiththem.

AsaparentmyselfIknowthemerementionofthe‘H’wordcansendtheaveragefamilyofateenagerintoallsortsofhistrionics.PerhapsthebiggestincentiveissomethingsomeonetoldmetheyhadseenonabillboardintheLondonUnderground.Itfeaturesanoldcouplesittingintheirloungeroomwithanimageofsomeexoticlocationandthecaption“Wecouldhavedonethatonce”.Seemsapplicabletoapersonsstudiesandwheretheycouldleadthem.

IhopethataimingforaPersonalBestforstudentsishighontheagenda.Thisisthefirststeptotakeandcanbeachievedthroughcooperationbetweenthreedifferentgroups-students,parentsandteachers.

• Cognitivebased(i.e.studyingwithsomeoneelse,rewritenotesinyourownwords,dopracticeproblems,selfverbalise,chapterreviewquestions,draftyourwork)

• Procedural(i.e.timemanagement–allocatetimeforstudy/homework,useofdiary,rewardyourselfafterwithpleasurableactivities)

• Metacognitive/Thinking(i.e.selftesting,mnemonics{rhymes/acronyms},thinkofreallifeexamples)

MeningitisMeningitisappearstobemoreprevalentatchangeofseasons.Meningitisiswhenthemembranesthatsurroundthebrainandspinalcord(meninges)becomeinfected.Meningitiscanbecausedbybacteriaorviruses.Youmustgettreatmentimmediately,becausemeningitiscancausedeath.

Immunisationcanprotectagainstsomeformsofmeningitis.

Thesymptomsandsignsofmeningitisinadultsandolderchildreninclude:• headache• fever• vomiting• neckstiffnessandjointpains• drowsinessandconfusion• purple–redskinrashorbruising• discomfortlookingatbrightlights(photophobia).

Adoctoristheonlypersonwhocanmakeadiagnosistodetermineifmeningitisisviralorbacterial.Meningitisissometimesdifficulttodiagnose.
